Not as heroic as the left--or as villainous as the right--believes |
As I write this, know that I tread lightly. It is not my intention to be alarmist, nor do I think Americans battling each other in the streets will be some sort of romanticized revolution for either side. And I can guarantee you that a sixty-two year old man who's fifty pounds overweight and whose legs begin cramping at about the hundred yard mark is not going to be waging combat.
But after years of hearing people pooh-poohing the Supreme Court overturning Roe vs. Wade and then watching it more or less come to pass this past week, I think downplaying any predictions about what the right may or may not do in the future is playing with fire. And after reading two different pieces (here and here) over the past month about the potential for the right to take what they can't get democratically by force, I think we should heed such cautionary warnings with all the concern that they engender.
Watching the right twist itself into knots of righteous indignation over wearing a mask or taking a vaccination to help protect their fellow Americans is all you need to know about how much they value your life. Frankly, it's not a matter of if they'll turn to violence, it's a matter of when.
And those of us on the left had better be ready to respond in kind or we will assuredly watch any semblance of what America was and can be disappear into a hate filled cloud.
