Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLXXXVI--Tracey Ullman: They Don't Know

This week's featured artist went on to great success in television after her brief music career, and as I was doing my weekly half-assed research, I realized that outside of the video for this week's tune I have never seen her on any of her television shows or in any movie.  Though I have seen an episode or two (or a hundred) of the TV show that her first TV series gave life to:  none other than The Simpsons, which just recently completed its thirty-third season.

Tracey Ullman was born in Slough, England in 1959 and from an early age showed a talent for entertaining people.  She began her career performing in a number of musicals, before getting her break on a BBC soap opera.  She made her first album in 1983 and met with some success which eventually led to her first TV show, The Tracey Ullman Show, on Fox.  By then her music career was over, but she would go on to appear in two more highly acclaimed television series, a number of movies, many plays and musicals, and several guest appearances on other shows.  She has won seven Emmys, a Golden Globe, and a host of other awards that aren't on the casual fan's radar.  Her music career was relatively brief, as she only released two albums, which spawned eight singles, before turning her full attention to acting.  Ullman continues to perform on stage and screen, having appeared in two movies in 2020, and two television series in 2021.

"They Don't Know" was the second single released from Ullman's 1983 debut album, the humorously entitled You Broke My Heart in 17 PlacesThe single would reach #2 in the U.K. and #8 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100.  The album peaked at #14 on the U.K. Albums Chart and #34 here in America.

Fun Fact:  "They Don't Know" was the second single Ullman recorded, and years later when asked if she'd do anything differently for her career, she responded that she would have quit making music after she recorded "They Don't Know."  Yes, it's that good.

As my regular readers (both of you) know, I have an extreme fondness for a) female vocalists, and b) good Top 40 pop and "They Don't Know" is a) sung by a female vocalist, and b) an exemplar of the best of what Top 40 pop has to offer.  Ullman channels 60's girl groups both vocally and musically and turns in one of the catchiest songs the 1980's had to offer.  Every time I listen to it, even almost forty years since the first time I heard it, it reminds me not only of why I've devoted so much of my life to pop music, but also why it's been worth every minute.  It's an absolute gem of a song.

Lyric Sheet:  "So I don't mind if they don't understand/When I look at you and you hold my hand/'Cause they don't know about us/And they've never heard of love..."

Enjoy (be sure to stick around for the cute cameo at the end):

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLXXXV--The Babys: Isn't It Time?

Fitting that the week my youngest son graduates from high school, Friday Night Jukebox is featuring a tune from the year I graduated....

The Babys formed in London, England in 1974 and a mere two years later had released their first album.  Though the band had a couple of top forty hits and developed a good reputation for their live shows, their disappointment at not having more commercial success drove the band to an early demise, and they broke up in 1981.  For their career, The Babys released six albums and nine singles.  Lead singer John Waite went on to have a #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 as a solo artist, and with three other members of The Babys formed the supergroup Bad English (which also had a number one hit in America).  In 2013 two original members of The Babys reformed the band and they continue to perform, having released their last album in 2014.

Fun Fact:  The Babys featured a backing vocal group known as The Babettes, which contained singers from gospel icon Andrae Crouch's backing band The Disciples.

"Isn't It Time" was the first single released from their 1977 album Broken HeartsThe single was the first of two for The Babys to peak at #13 (with a bullet!) in the United States (it did hit number one in Australia--so many cools kids Down Under!), while the album reached #34 on the Billboard 200.

In the hands of many, "Isn't It Time" could have been just another love ballad (and to some it might still be....), but The Babys took the song one step beyond by incorporating the best of the 70's with the best of gospel.  Accompanied by a stark piano, Waite opens with a sultry confession before The Babettes (and the rest of the band) kick in with some good old-fashioned rock and roll.  The back and forth between Waite and The Babettes for the rest of the song--with an assist from the drums--really makes the song a cut (so to speak) above the normal fare, though I freely admit that being one whose formative music years were spent in the seventies might help a bit, too.

Lyric Sheet:  "I've finally found the answers/To the questions that keep going through my mind/Hey babe!/Isn't it time?...

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLXXXIV--The Verve: The Drugs Don't Work

When I first started Friday Night Jukebox, I had intended to do a lot more posts on tunes like this week's, that is songs that were album cuts that didn't quite get the attention of hit singles.  Unbeknownst to me before I did my weekly half-assed research, this week's featured song was actually quite a hit in the U.K. but since the bulk of my readers (both of them) are from the U.S. I figured I was living up to the spirit of that intention.  Might be splitting hairs, but....

I wrote a post in 2019 about The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony," and since that time nothing in the band's history has changed--they have not reunited since breaking up in 2009, and the odds of it happening still are very slim.  And that's all I have to say about that....

Fun Fact:  The Verve were originally just the Verve, but because they shared a name (of sorts) with Verve Records it caused some legal ramifications which the band resolved by becoming The (with a capital 't") Verve.

"The Drugs Don't Work" was the released in 1997 in their native U.K. as the second single from arguably their best album, Urban HymnsThe single reached #1 on the U.K. Singles Chart, but as noted above was not released as a single in the U.S. As a reminder for those who don't remember a post from three years ago (my guess, everyone who isn't the title character in Rain Man), the album hit #1 in  England, and #23 here in America.

As many people as have listened to the song is the number of meanings you'll find for "The Drugs Don't Work," and songwriter Richard Ashcroft has only said it's a song written when he and the band were using a lot of recreational drugs and how their effectiveness eventually lessened...and purposefully said nothing more so each listener can enjoy their own interpretation.  Trained in the "Shit Doesn't Have to Have Meaning, It Just Is" school of art appreciation, I don't have a dog in the hunt.  But for myself, I love Ashcroft's soulful singing, the winsome acoustic guitar, the lush strings, and the repetition of lyrics at the end (especially helpful for an old coot singing along whose memory isn't what it used to be).  I will say, from what I've read, I don't find the song as sad as many do--I find it incredibly hopeful, though laced with a heavy dose of reality.  All in all, just a stellar song, and another find addition to the annals of Friday Night Jukebox (if I do say so myself...).

Lyric Sheet:  "But I know I'm on a losing streak/Cause I passed down my old street/And if you wanna show, then just let me know/And I'll sing in your ear again..."

Enjoy:

The blow that just might save our Democracy

Women--American's last best hope

While there is rightfully much consternation, doubt, and concern with regard to the conservative justice leaked decision that will in all likelihood overturn Roe v. Wade, I think it important to remember that the last time women were this pissed off it resulted in a midterm bloodbath for republicans.

I'm talking, of course, about the Russian engineered election of Donald Trump in 2016, costing the incredibly more qualified Hillary Clinton a chance to become the first female U.S. President, which two years later resulted in historic Democratic victories in the U.S. House in large part due to enraged women who would have preferred a President who hasn't allegedly sexually assaulted 26 women.  Democrats in that election picked up 41 seats in the House of Representatives.

While nothing will ever erase the stink that was Donald Trump or make up for the suffering that far too many women are going to experience as a result of Justice Alito's horrifically bad decision on abortion, making republicans pay at the ballot box this November can get us started back in the right direction.  Codifying Roe and reshaping the Supreme Court will go a long way toward making America great again (to coin a phrase).

If nothing else, it will save our Democracy for at least two more years and that's two more years that the hope that America at its best represents stays alive.

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLXXXIII--Roger Daltrey: Without Your Love

For those wondering, while last week's Friday Night Jukebox featured Who band mate Pete Townshend, the next two weeks posts will not feature John Entwistle or Keith Moon as I have zero familiarity with their solo work.  There's only so much time....

As with last week's post, this week's bio recap will be mercifully short as I've already written about the Who a couple of times.  Roger Daltrey was actually the founding member of the Who, as Townshend and Entwistle originally joined his band The Detours.  Daltrey was known for leading the band and settling arguments with his fists and was at one point fired from the band for beating up Moon for supplying drugs to Townshend and Entwistle.  Daltrey has appeared in numerous movies and TV shows, most notably the film version of the Who's rock opera, TommyFor his solo career, he has released 10 studio albums (with two top ten LPs in his native U.K.), and 42 singles (with a top ten in Great Britain and a top twenty here in America).  As noted in last week's bio for Townshend, Daltrey is involved in their charity for teen cancer, and has loaned his talents to numerous charitable events through the years.

Fun Fact:  Daltrey kept extremely busy throughout the course of his younger days in the fine art of procreation.  In addition to the four children he has from his two marriages, Daltrey has four other children from various relationships throughout the sixties.

"Without Your Love" was released as a single in 1980 from the soundtrack to the film McVicar (a biopic in which Daltrey starred as the title character).  The single reached #55 in the U.K. and #20 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100 (it hit number two in the Netherlands--so many cool Dutch kids!).  The album hit #39 on the U.K Albums Chart, and #22 here in the United States.

While the song is catchy as all hell and the backing music is tastefully understated, this song is all Daltrey's vocals.  Daltrey weaves the tale of a man trying to find his place in the world (more or less the story behind the film noted above) but realizing that no matter where he ends up it means nothing without the love of his life.  Daltrey sings with all the calmness of a man who has made his peace with his life, and delivers a performance that would make the Gods of Love themselves smile.  A lovely and loving ballad.

Lyric Sheet:  "And if I could travel far/If I could touch the stars/Where would I be without your love?"

Enjoy:
