Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLXXXI--The Notting Hillbillies: Railroad Worksong

Unbeknown to me before I did my weekly half-assed research, this week's tune is actually well over a hundred years old, and originally began as a song sung by railroad workers and road gangs (among others) as they toiled.  It's been recorded by dozens of artists through the years, with differing lyrics (many featuring America folk hero John Henry), and often under the title "Take This Hammer" or "Nine Pound Hammer."  Oh, the places you'll go on Friday Night Jukebox!

The Notting Hillbillies were formed in 1986 by Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler.  The band recorded their first, and only, LP in 1990, before embarking on periodic tours through 1993 (they were also the music guest on a Saturday Night Live episode), at which time the various members returned to their previous projects.  They reunited in 1997 for a short tour and in 2002 for a performance for charity.  They released three singles from their one album, none of which charted in the U.S. or the U.K.

"Railroad Worksong" was on their sole album noted above, the rather cleverly (really!) titled Missing...Presumed Having a Good TimeThe song was not released as a single by the Notting Hillbillies, and the album did not chart in America or Great Britain but did reach #6 in Australia (so many cool kids in Australia!).

Every now and again a song comes along that reminds you of why you have always loved a certain genre of music, and when it was first released "Railroad Worksong" did that for me as an exemplar of folk/Americana music.  Steve Phillips lead vocals capture well the hope inherent in the song, and Mark Knopfler's guitar (elegantly understated) underscores the resolve of the protagonist as he makes his way in the world.  Extra props for the "good buddy" thrown in at intervals throughout the song bringing it ever closer to home.  A nice reminder of how beautiful simplicity in music can be.

Lyric Sheet:  "If he asks you was I running/If he asks you was I running/If he asks you, good buddy, was I running/Tell him I was flying, tell him I was flying..."

Enjoy:

The antidote to fascism

Sting like a butterfly, indeed

In light of Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow's fiery speech excoriating republicans for selling hate in lieu of having an agenda to actually help Americans, I came across this passage from Tom Sullivan of Digby's Hullabaloo:

Democrats think politics is about good policy and good governance. It is. But only if you win the power to make it happen. Elections are not about good policy. If Trumpism has not disabused Democrats of that fantasy, there’s no hope for them. Voters want leaders — even phony ones — willing to fight for them and to risk themselves in the effort. Wimps need not apply. Stern words do not count.

While promoting the good we've done in the past two years will help, it is crucial that we stand toe to toe with republicans on their culture war, reminding the sixty percent of Americans who aren't batshit crazy that republicans are coming for your birth control, are going to shove gay Americans back in the closet, are going to increase suicide among trans youths, that their grooming schtick is all bullshit to take away from the fact that republicans have done nothing ever to solve the problems of everyday Americans, and that fascism is their calling card.

Debating their talking points isn't enough--we need to take a baseball bat to their lies and their fealty to fascism.  Our very existence depends upon it.

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLXXX--Electric Light Orchestra: Strange Magic

Just a wee bit late for this one...

Anyhoo, if I were to sit down and start writing down my all-time favorite songs off the top of my head, this week's tune would be one of those that, when I was done, I would slap my forehead and say, "How the hell did I forget that one?"  Needless to say, as I've done my half-assed research and listened to it a few times it's been a real treat, akin to seeing a long-lost friend...

Electric Light Orchestra (here on out, ELO) formed in Birmingham, England in 1970, and thankfully, their music is considerably more interesting than their history.  ELO has basically been the brainchild of leader and co-founder Jeff Lynne (noted earlier on Friday Jukebox for his work as a member of the Traveling Wilburys), and as he's gone so has the band.  ELO had quite a bit of success between their beginning and when it was disbanded in 1986 by Lynne, selling over fifty million records.  The band performed in different incarnations and variations on the name until 2014 when Lynne reformed the band.  For their career, ELO has released fourteen studio albums (with five of them hitting the top ten here in the States), and fifty singles (with six peaking in the top ten, again in America).  The band had a little more chart success in their native U.K., with 3 #1 albums and one #1 single.  ELO released its latest album in 2019 under the moniker Jeff Lynne's ELO.

Fun Fact:  ELO holds the record for the most top forty hits on the Billboard Hot 100 (20) without ever having a number one single.  I'm pretty sure they can live with it....

"Strange Magic" was the second single released from ELO's 1975 album Face the MusicThe single peaked at #14 (with a bullet!), while the album reached #8 on the Billboard 200.

It's hardly surprising after 380 posts about songs I'm beginning to run out of both superlatives and ways to describe how [insert gushing adjective here] these songs are to me.  Suffice it to say that "Strange Magic" hits all the right notes (to turn a phrase) for an emaycee pop music dream--catchy, lush harmonies, heartfelt vocals, and striking instrumentation.  It's been delightful ear candy for me all week, and as is often the case with my weekly tunes, I've been singing it to my heart's content (if not my partner's and my youngest son....).

Lyric Sheet:  "Oh, I'm never gonna be the same again/Now I've seen the way it's got to end/Sweet dream, sweet dream...

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLXXIX--Travis: Why Does It Always Rain on Me?

This week's featured tune is another in a long list of artists/songs introduced to me by my lovely daughter.  At one time, she was quite the aficionado of Brit Pop, and her sharing of her love of the genre led me to many a good tune and many a good band....

Travis had its beginnings in 1990 in Glasgow, Scotland, and by 1991 had all of the members who would form the core of the band.  They had their first taste of success with their debut album, Good Feeling, in 1997, and with their second album (featuring this week's tune) in 1999 were well on their way to critical and commercial success. While the bulk of their success has been in their native U.K., they have had a modicum of success here in the States.  Travis has won two Brit Awards and are considered by some as having set the stage for Keane and Coldplay (both of whom have also been blessed enough to be featured on Friday Night Jukebox).  For their career, Travis have released nine studio albums (with two #1's on the U.K. Albums Chart and seven of the nine reaching the top five), and 24 singles (six of which have hit the top ten on the U.K. Singles Chart).  They released their latest LP in 2020 and continue to tour and record.  For those wondering, the band's name came from the character of Travis Henderson (portrayed by Harry Dean Stanton) in the critically acclaimed film, Paris, Texas.

"Why Does It Always Rain on Me?" was the third single released from Travis' career making second album, The Man Who The song would hit #10 (with a bullet, or whatever the British equivalent of Billboard's bullet is) on the U.K. Singles Chart, while the album was their first #1 on the U.K. Albums Chart.  Neither entered the top 100 in America.

Fun Fact:  This is probably the coolest Fun Fact yet...When Travis played the Glastonbury Festival in support of the recently released The Man Who album, the album had already peaked on the album chart and was beginning to look like a sales disappointment.  However, as the band broke into "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?" it began to rain (after several hours of sunshine) and stopped raining when the band finished the song.  Word of mouth about the incident caused people to flood radio stations with requests and the band's album as well as the single became a hit, very likely rescuing the band's career.

Every now and again while preparing Friday Night Jukebox, I come across a song that I had forgotten how wonderful it truly was, and "Why Does It Always Rain on Me" was such a song this week.  From Fran Healy's understated but heartfelt vocals to the melancholy--yet still hopeful--lyrics, this tune is about as good as a pop song can get.  The melody is like a dream, and the band hits all the right notes, highlighting Healy's vocals while adding their own signature to the song.  Bonus points because my Mom liked this one a lot, too.

Lyric Sheet:  "Sunny days/Where have you gone?/I get the strangest feeling you belong/Why does it always rain on me..."

Enjoy (props to Fran Healy for wearing a kilt in the video):
