Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXLVI--Gary Myrick and the Figures: She Talks in Stereo

Once again, my introduction to the weekly featured tune was through the promotional singles the major record labels used to send to music stores back in the day.  This one, though, had to be one of the earliest ones I ever received, as it was released the year I began with Camelot Music (1980).  Time does, my friends, indeed fly....

To call Gary Myrick a one hit wonder would be generous, but he's still managed to have over forty years in the music business.  Starting in 1980 with his band the Figures (which lasted an entire two years), Myrick then went on to a solo career, joined forces with Paul Simonon of the Clash fame to form a band called Havana 3am, returned to his solo career, reunited with the Figures, before once again returning to his solo career.  Myrick has also done guitar work in the studio and touring with John Waite, Todd Rundgren, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Brian Wilson, and Stevie Wonder, among others.  For his career, counting bands and his solo work, he has released ten studio albums.  Considering that the highest charting album Myrick ever had hit #138 on the Billboard 200, one has to admit that Myrick has done quite well for himself.

"She Talks in Stereo" was the first single released from Myrick's quite innovatively entitled debut album, Gary Myrick and the FiguresThe single did not chart in America but did hit #56 in Australia (so many cool kids in Australia!).  The album just missed the Billboard 200, reaching #203.

Like many a tune before it here on Friday Night Jukebox, "She Talks in Stereo" isn't likely to go on any best singles of all-time lists, but it's still a hell of a pop song.  Featuring an 80's new wave vibe with a hint of jangly guitars and plenty of synthesizers, the song is a paean to the early days of a love relationship--and how the voice of a lover can sound like the lilts of angels.  The chorus is about as catchy as a chorus can get and Myricks staccato vocals do just enough to capture the rapture of being in love.  Sweet emotion, indeed--all courtesy of an infectious piece of pop pie.

Lyric Sheet:  "Slippin' slidin' we go drivin' by/And I can hear her say/ My baby says hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey..."

Enjoy:

I left my heart...

One of a kind...

Tony Bennett was the fourteenth artist I devoted a post to on Friday Night Jukebox (Vol. XIV), and seven years later I wrote a second one (Vol. CCCLXXXIX) for one of the finest singers this world has ever seen.  Sadly, Bennett passed away today at the age of ninety-six, leaving us his wonderful legacy of over seventy years in the music business.

Bennett is the last of his generation--Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Perry Como, Johnny Mathis, among many others--of male crooners, artists who interpreted songs written by others and left their own indelible mark on those songs.  While the bulk of its success was before my time (and I freely admit to not being an expert), it was a gift that so, so many of us will be able to enjoy for the rest of our lives--and for generations to come.

For me, Bennett will always hold a special place in my heart for "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" his paean to my forever home and my city by the bay.  This December will mark fifty years since my family left the Bay Area, and lo these many years the sentiments in Bennett's signature tune resonate as much today as they did on a cold winter's day in 1973 when our plane landed in our new home of Indiana.  Just a beautiful tribute from a one-of-a-kind singer to a one-of-a-kind city.

Godspeed, Mr. Bennett, Godspeed.

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXLV--Johnny Cash: Love's Been Good to Me

This week's featured tune was written by America's pop poet Rod McKuen, who had quite a run of success in the sixties.  McKuen was a multi-talented artist, writing poetry and music, as well performing as a folk musician and an actor.  He won a Grammy Award for Spoken Word and was nominated for two Academy Awards for composing the score for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and A Boy Named Charlie Brown, and also had a song he wrote hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 ("Jean" by Oliver). While McKuen was beloved by the masses, he was universally reviled by critics who thought his work was schmaltzy.  McKuen had the last laugh, though, as his recordings sold over one hundred million copies, and his books of poetry sold sixty million....

I wrote about Johnny Cash in Jukebox CLXXXV, and as he's been at the Ultimate Hall of Fame for over twenty years now, there really isn't much more I can add other than to say I'm still as big of a fan as ever.

(Not So) Fun Fact:  In 1983 Cash suffered a serious abdominal injury when he was kicked in the stomach by, of all things, an ostrich on his farm.  Ouch!

"Love's Been Good to Me" was released in 2004 on Cash's posthumous album American V:  A Hundred HighwaysThe song was not released as a single, but the album went on to become Cash's first #1 album on the Billboard 200 in thirty-seven years.

If ever oh ever a wistful song there was "Love's Been Good to Me" is one because because...Johnny Cash was a marvel.  Against its sparse production, Cash delivers the vocals of a man who's never been able to settle down but still has no complaints as he's had the love of many a good woman throughout his years.  There's a peace--and a happiness--in the narrator's story and Cash captures it perfectly.  Cash recorded this one mere months before his passing, and one has to wonder if he wasn't in some ways singing about his own life--and letting us all know that he was going to his end without any regrets, too.  Disclaimer:  I have to admit that there's a special sport in my heart for this one because love's been awfully good to me as well....

Lyric Sheet:   "And she could laugh away the dark clouds/Cry away the snow/It seems like only yesterday/As down the road I go..."

Enjoy (note that Frank Sinatra did a wonderful version of the song as well):

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXLIV--The Charlatans: Impossible

Another week, another tune I was introduced to by my darling daughter.  She's made me some killer mix CDs through the years--and several of her picks have added to the luster that shines forth from Friday Night Jukebox....

The Charlatans formed in West Midlands, England in 1988, and while having virtually no success in the U.S. (none of their singles have hit the Billboard Hot 100, and only two of their albums have reached the Billboard 200, with their debut LP peaking the highest at #73), they have had a mammoth career in their native U.K.  They released their debut album in 1980 and it was an immediate success, hitting #1 on the U.K. Albums Chart.  The Charlatans have put together a nice string of hit singles and albums, while expanding and experimenting with their sound, over the past thirty-five years, and not surprisingly have mixed in numerous tours.  For their career, they have released thirteen studio albums (nine of which have hit the top ten in the U.K., with three #1's), three live albums, and six compilations.  The band has also released 48 singles, four of which peaked in the top ten on the U.K. Singles Chart.  The band is still touring; sadly, original members Rob Collins (auto accident, 1995) and Jon Brookes (cancer, 2013) are no longer with them.  The Charlatans haven't released a new studio album since 2017.

Fun Fact:  Due to there already being a band called The Charlatans in the U.S., for a number of years the English version had to dub themselves The Charlatans U.K. here in the States.

"Impossible" was the third single from their 1999 album the rather selfishly entitled Us and Us OnlyThe single hit #15 on the U.K. Singles Chart, while the album reached #2 on the U.K. Albums Chart.

Opening with some thickly strummed and stark acoustic guitar, "Impossible" lets you know right off the bat that it's not going to be just another single.  A little later a jaunty piano joins in, followed closely by some driving drums and the song becomes catch-catch-catchy as all hell.  The lyrics chronicle a dying (if not dead) relationship, and while they're definitely a cut above the usual pop music fare, they're also a bit on the bitter side--not quite a "fuck you" but not far from it either.  As I listened to it while doing my weekly half-assed research, it struck me that the song--both musically and vocally--was reminiscent of mid to late sixties Bob Dylan, only to discover that, sure enough the band had been fans of, and the album was influenced by, Dylan (among others).  When my daughter first sent it to me, it was a song I wanted to hear again and again--and some twenty odd years later I still turn the volume up just a little bit more when I hear it, and it won't be long before I'm back for yet another listen....

Lyric Sheet: "You can't kill an idea cause it's raining/Keep it in the family, keep it in the kids/You know, they're all handing out free tickets/This big old boat is-a-startin' to sink..."

Enjoy:
