Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXXXVIII--Bearfoot: Before I Go

I've written a time or two about songs I discovered from listening to Pandora while I worked at the thrift shop, and this week's featured tune is from their folk channel.  We also have another Jukebox first, as this week's artist is the first from our 49th state, Alaska.  So in a way, this week we'll be going North...to the Future....

Bearfoot (originally Bearfoot Bluegrass) formed in Cordova, Alaska in 1999, though the members had met and began playing years earlier at a Folk Arts Camp.  They got their big break in 2001 when they won the Telluride Bluegrass band contest, and shortly thereafter released their first album.  The band eventually turned their musical skills toward Americana, went through numerous personnel changes, moved to Nashville, and after a show in Montana disbanded in 2013.  For their career they released five albums.  Bearfoot remained especially popular in their native Alaska throughout their years together, being considered "small town heroes."  They also had a devoted following thanks to featuring three female vocalists.

"Before I Go" was released in 2009 on their fourth album Doors and WindowsThe song was not released as a single, and the album did not chart.

A folk song, banjo playing, a mandolin, some fiddle, and female vocals, both lead and backing, that are as sweet and lusciously smooth as a cream pie...pretty much makes for an emaycee fave.  Written by longtime troubadour John Hiatt, "Before I Go" is an ode to life's journey, its glories and failures, its knowns and unknowns, and most of all to having a partner to share it with.  Bearfoot makes the most of its talents and takes a well-written song to heights that are heavenly serene.  And it's just the kind of song that warms the heart of an old fart folkie like me....

Lyric Sheet:  "And I will try, but I will stumble/And I will fly, he told me so/Proud and high or low and humble/Many miles before I go..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXXXVII--The Chambers Brothers: Time Has Come Today

Alas, my two loyal readers, this week's post is not a day early...rather last week's is almost a week late.  Time and circumstance, friends, time and circumstance....

A few years back this week's tune roared back into my consciousness...and for the life of me, I can't remember why.  All I know is I heard it somewhere, added it to my TIDAL (fuck Spotify) playlist, and have been enjoying it ever since.  My guess is a movie or TV show (it's been featured in many), but no matter--a great song is a great song however it came into my musical world....

The Chambers Brothers honed their skills in their native Mississippi playing in church choirs before eldest brother George (Lester, Willie, and Joe were the other brothers, with non-brother Brian Keenan joining the band on drums) moved to Los Angeles following a stint in the military.  His brothers would join him in L.A. and from 1954 until 1965 they toiled musically in relative obscurity.  Originally a folk outfit, they eventually, like many other bands from that era, went electric, and later landed a record deal.  They had a modicum of success (and one huge hit single), before disbanding in 1972, and then reuniting in 1974.  For their career, the band released six studio albums, seven live albums, ten compilations, and ten singles.  Through the years the band has toured intermittently, and all of the brothers continued playing music either solo or in various bands.  Sadly drummer Keenan passed away suddenly in 1988, and eldest brother George died in 2019.

Fun Fact:  The band recorded an album in 1972 that was never released called Oh, My God!  and it remained as such until finally being released last October, over fifty years after its making.  And that, folks, is perseverance personified.

"Time Has Come Today" was released in 1967 on their album The Time Has ComeBoth would become the biggest hits of their career--the single peaked at #11 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album hit #6 on the Billboard 200.

I've written a time or two (or three or four...) about artists who come together and produce a moment of magic, and this is one of those moments.  I've never heard another song by the Chambers Brothers but judging from their short heyday and lack of other high charting singles I'd guess "Time Has Come Today" was their moment of genius.  A call to arms (literally), Lester's lead vocals scream of its urgency with the highlight being the band members screaming "Hey!" after each line early in the song and then "Time!" later in the song.  Instrumentally it was ahead of its time and may be the first song on Jukebox to feature cowbells.  In the end, many consider it to be a watershed song of the psychedelic era and that's much higher praise than any of my words could muster.

Lyric Sheet:  "I've been loved and put aside (Time!)/I've been crushed by a tumbling tide (Time!)/And my soul has been psychedelicized (Time!)..."

Enjoy (There are three different lengths to "Time Has Come Today" and in my infinite wisdom I chose the one that was the biggest hit):

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXXXVI--Blind Faith: Can't Find My Way Home

A few years back I heard wisps of this week's tune while watching a (not particularly interesting) documentary about racist/conspiracy theorist nutjob Eric Clapton (tell us how you really feel, emaycee!), and I knew I recognized the song but had no idea who had done it.  Thanks to a quick internet search, I discovered it was an album-oriented rock staple on FM stations back in the day...which is most likely where I knew it from....

Blind Faith formed in 1969 when Clapton (Jukebox CLXXV as a member of Derek and the Dominoes) and Steve Winwood (Jukebox CCCLXXXIV) decided they wanted to do some playing together.  Agents/promoters quickly seized on the pairing of the famous duo and an album was rush released and a three-month tour was undertaken.  At which point Clapton decided it was considerably more effort than he wanted to expend, and the band was no more.  There were apparently few hard feelings as Clapton and Winwood have joined forces in concert on a few occasions in the intervening years.  Both men would go on to have quite a bit of solo success, and their one-off musical endeavor is considered a classic.

Fun Fact:  The album cover of their lone LP featured a prepubescent topless girl...which caused quite the stir in America and the cover was changed to a generic photo of the band.  It would eventually be released with the original artwork some years later.  God only knows the fuss such an album cover would cause today....

"Can't Find My Way Home" was featured on the band's only LP, the oh, so creatively entitled Blind FaithThe song was not released as a single (except for some odd ass reason in the Netherlands--so many cool Dutch kids!), while the album would hit #1 in both the U.S. and the U.K.

From the song's eerie instrumental opening to Winwood's otherworldly falsetto vocals, "Can't Find My Way Home" is a masterclass in just how far the envelope can be pushed in pop music.  Clapton's guitar has echoes of raga and Ginger Baker's jungle drums both give you the feeling that you're lost, walking down the streets in some exotic locale like Algiers or Budapest.  It's been surmised that the song is about either trying to kick a drug habit or the search for God, but either way the band captured the feeling in a stunning fashion.  Three minutes and seventeen seconds of brilliance.

Lyric Sheet:  "Come down off your throne and leave your body alone/Somebody must change/You are the reason I've been waiting so long/Somebody holds the key..."

Enjoy:
