Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLXXVII--George Strait: Ocean Front Property
I discovered this week's tune in the late eighties while I was still slaving for Camelot Music, at a time when a number of artists with stylistic nods to old-time Country Music--The Judds, Randy Travis, Patty Loveless--began selling a lot of records. Thanks to my half-assed research, I discovered that this was actually a movement know as Neotraditional Country that began in the mid-eighties. Oh, the knowledge I've gained from writing Friday Night Jukebox....
Speaking of gaining knowledge (segues are for amateurs), I had no idea, despite spending a good chunk of my music store years during his heyday, how successful George Strait has been over the last forty-six years. Strait began performing in 1976, and since that time he has sold over 100 million records and is the twelfth best-selling American music artist of all-time. He's also known for his innovative tours (one of which grossed $99 million in three years). Strait has won 22 Country Music Awards, a Grammy Award, and has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. For his career, Strait has released 45 albums, 27 of which have hit #1 on the Country Music charts. He's also released 126 singles, with 44 (a record for the Country charts) #1's; 112 of those singles have hit the top ten. Strait completed his final tour in 2014, but continues to record, releasing his latest LP in 2019.
Fun Fact: Strait holds the record for most number one and most top five singles in the history of any type of music. He also is third, behind only Elvis and the Beatles, for the most multi-platinum albums in music history.
"Ocean Front Property" was released in 1986 and was the first single from his conveniently titled album Ocean Front Property. Both the single and the album hit #1 (with a bullet!) on Billboard's Country Music charts.
"Ocean Front Property" is a whimsical song about a man trying to convince the woman who has left him that he won't miss her, when he can't even convince himself. Strait was blessed with a baritone voice tailor made for singing Country, and he makes the most of it. The instrumental break features a jaunty piano, a dandy (if too short-lived) fiddle, and the creme de la creme of old-time country: some luxurious steel guitar. All in all, a nice piece with all the echoes of classic Country--and bonus points for mentioning the Golden Gate Bridge.

After four years of Donald Trump, it's not often that a headline stuns me, but when I read this weekend that multiple states allow a rapist to sue for parental custody in rape-related pregnancies, it set me off on a tirade as to whether or not it was possible for America to get more fucked up than it currently is.
But for all my outrage, it's but a grain of sand in the Gobi Desert compared to the pain, heartache, and trauma for those women who have to face their rapist in a court of law to trying to protect her child from the horror of spending weekends with the cretin who raped their mother.
A civilized society can and should do better than this.

At a time when five oil executives have cashed out their shares to the tune of $99 million and profited from the death and destruction Vladimir Putin has unleased on Ukraine, a new report shows that almost a third of American workers (51.9 million people) make less than $15 an hour.
Now I know that the curtsy queen, Kyrsten Sinema, thinks $15 an hour leads to the lush life, but in the real world it comes to $31,200 a year, IF someone works full-time. It also leaves workers in fifteen states and the District of Columbia below the federal poverty line, and God only knows how many of us poor bastards are still working for the paltry $7.25 an hour that republicans have decided is good money for an hour's work.
Two more U.S. Senators elected this fall would go a long way toward changing the pitiful state of the minimum wage in America and is just one more reason to vote in full force this November.

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLXXVI--B.J. Thomas: Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head
If you've ever seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, you'll certainly remember the scene wherein Paul Newman and Katharine Ross are riding a newfangled (at the time) vehicle called a bicycle around her home's front yard. It's a humorous and whimsical moment in the film, made all the more so by this week's tune providing the background music....
Billy Joe (B.J.) Thomas was born in 1942 in Hugo, Oklahoma, and began his career as a teenager singing in a church choir. While in high school he joined a band called the Triumphs, and by 1966 they had their first hit, a cover of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." Thomas went solo shortly thereafter and had a string of hits through the early eighties before finding God (he had drinking and drug problems) and beginning a quite successful transition to singing Contemporary Christian music. He would go on to win five Grammys in the Christian music categories but would incorporate many of his older pop hits into his shows. For his career, Thomas released 60 albums (the vast majority of which were religious in nature), and 71 singles (with two hitting #1, and three more reaching the top ten). Sadly, Thomas passed away last year from complications from lung cancer.
Fun Fact: Thomas holds the record for the longest-titled single to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for his song "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song."
"Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" (written by songwriters extraordinaire Burt Bacharach and Hal David) was, as noted above, originally written for and appeared on the soundtrack to, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (and also won an Academy Award for Best Song). Thomas later included it on his own album, the ingeniously titled Raindrops Keep Fallin on My Head. When my sister, my brother, and myself were in grade school, there was a tragic plane crash (couldn't begin to tell you which one), and we asked our father what he would do if he was on a plane that was about to crash. I thought of this piece of our past as I did my half-assed research this week, and it dawned on me why my father loved this song so: it's about a man who's vowing come hell or high water to make the best of a bad situation. The song opens with a brief but marvelous ukulele solo, has a nice trumpet solo during the break, and is sung with all the plaintiveness that Thomas can muster. This one is obviously a bit personal for me, but it's a hell of a pop song and a gentle reminder of just how much our memories shape our lives.
