Friday Night Jukebox Vol. CDXII--Adele: Someone like You

Several years back I was helping restock a thrift store that had been damaged by smoke from a fire at a restaurant next door in anticipation of its grand reopening.  Over the course of several days, I kept hearing this week's tune again and again going from initially "What is this shlock?" to "Holy shit, this is incredible!"  When I finally remembered to look it up online, I played the song and asked my wife if she'd ever heard it, and she was like "Duh, it's Adele, one of the biggest stars going these days."  D'oh! So much for my new music cred....

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born in 1988 in London and began singing at the age of four.  After graduating from an art school at 18, she began making money from music immediately.  At the ripe old age of twenty she released her first album, and by the time she was twenty-one she was an international superstar.  I could literally fill several paragraphs with all her accomplishments, but just to highlight:  she has sold over 120 million records, won 15 Grammys, 12 Brit Awards, an Oscar, and an Emmy.  Ten million people tried to buy tickets for her 2016 World Tour, of which only 750,000 seats were available.  For her career, Adele has released four albums, with all four hitting #1 in her native U.K., and three reaching number one in the U.S.  She has had a #1 album in 36 different countries.  She's also released 18 singles with three number ones in the U.K. and five in America.  And she probably has a good forty years of touring and recording to go....

Fun Fact:  Adele is the only artist to have an album (21) be at #1 on the Billboard 200 while also having three singles hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 as the LP rested atop the album chart.  The album also had the longest reign of an album by a female artist at 24 weeks.

"Someone like You" was the second single from Adele's diamond certified (sales of over ten million) LP 21Amazingly enough, both the single and the album hit #1 in the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as more countries than I have the time to list.

A piano, some of the best vocals you'll ever hear in your life (not an exaggeration), and lyrics and music that easily cracks the top ten (if not top five) of all-time great "My Life Will Go On But My Heart Is Going To Be Shattered For A Good While" songs.  It still puts a lump in my throat every time I hear it. And all that's left to say is this:  Just listen to it--by the end, you'll understand.

Lyric Sheet:  "Nothing compares, no worries or cares/Regrets and mistakes, they're memories made/Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?"

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXI--The Shins: For a Fool

When I first started Friday Night Jukebox, it was my intent to feature a lot (though not only) of album cuts that less discerning (polite way of saying younger) music fans might have missed in the ever-present competition to feature only hit singles.  Didn't quite work out that way (apparently, I'm quite the fan of hit singles myself), but this week it's nice to give one such album cut a place in the pantheon (or not) that is Friday Night Jukebox....

I wrote about The Shins in Jukebox XLIII in 2015, and in the years since they have continued their numerous band incarnations (with James Mercer remaining the only constant), as well as releasing their fifth LP in 2017.  They finished a twenty-first anniversary tour in September and will undoubtedly have a few more before all is said and done.  For their career, The Shins have released five studio albums (with two hitting the top five on the Billboard 200), four EPs, and 23 singles (with a whopping one charting).

"For a Fool" was not released as a single, and it appeared on their album Port of MorrowThe LP peaked at #3 on the albums chart.

Over the last twenty years or so, it seems that most of my musical discoveries occur while I'm driving to and from work, and "For a Fool" is a perfect example.  Over the course of several weeks, it grew on me until I reached a point where I sang it again and again after I got home and looked forward to what could often be a miserable drive just so I could hear it again.  Mercer envisioned the song as a country single (I can definitely see it) and based it on relationships he'd had throughout his life (good to know that even rock stars can be somebody's fool).  The song opens with a lazy guitar and the vocals in the first stanza slide slowly over sparse musical accompaniment before moving into a lush chorus with heavier orchestration that puts the "catchy" in catchy as all hell.  From beginning to end the instrumentation, lyrics, and vocals have a melancholy resignation (but never get maudlin) where you can hear the heartache of another lost love, with the heart telling itelf, "Not again...ah, shit, yes again."  It's pop music magic, from a performer who seems to specialize in pop music magic.

Lyric Sheet:  "If I can learn/Anything from this, then I'd be like/The fox in the fable of light..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDX--Mumford & Sons: Little Lion Man

I spent the week trying to remember what first called my attention to this week's featured tune, and I think it was the Beautiful Girl hearing it on the radio (or on some TV appearance) and telling me it sounded like the kind of music I would like.  Or it was their appearance at their first Grammy Awards...such are the joys of an aging memory.  Regardless (though I prefer giving the Beautiful Girl her due), it ended up being a most propitious introduction....

Mumford & Sons formed in London in 2007, and within two years had released their first LP.  It didn't take long for the band to achieve considerable success, and it has shown little sign of abating in the years since.  Their second album, Babel, in addition to debuting at #1 in both the U.K. and America, was nominated for eight Grammy Awards and won two.  Each member of the band is a multi-instrumentalist, and the band has become well known for its concerts.  Mumford & Sons have released four studio albums, with two charting at #1 and two at #2 in their native Great Britain, and three #1's and a #2 here in the States.  They've also released three live albums, six studio EPs, and seven live EP's.  They have released twenty-one singles as well, with a #12 hit in both countries.  By the way (goddamnit!), the band's name is a nod to lead vocalist Marcus Mumford (who took the lead in organizing and promoting the band) and to an earlier time when family businesses were more prevalent than they are today (though none of the band members are Mumford's sons...).

"Little Lion Man" was the first single released from their debut album, Sigh No More (the title is from a line in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing).  The single peaked at #45 (with a bullet!) in the United States and #24 in the United Kingdom.  The album reached #2 in both countries.

Fun Fact:  Despite making liberal use of the word "fucked," for some odd reason "Little Lion Man" was not given a Parental Advisory Sticker upon its release.  Maybe the Shakespeare reference gave it a literary sheen?

As I've noted a time or two (or a hundred) here on Friday Night Jukebox, it often amazes me how often I revisit a song I haven't heard in a while, and it reminds me just how incredible that song was (and why I added it to the pantheon of FNJ tunes).  Such was the case with "Little Lion Man"--it's a lyrical, musical, and vocal work of wonder.  The four musicians--stand-up bass, acoustic guitar, banjo (emaycee fave!), and organ--play off each other like a clock's gears mesh together, each instrument making a statement unto itself.  Marcus Mumford's lyrics--basically an indictment of himself for damnable behavior in a prior relationship--are searing, and Mumford sings a diatribe against himself that's just as fiery.  Add in the band's delicious harmonies, and you have a song for the ages...or at least one of the best ones in this still very young century.

Lyric Sheet:  "But it was not your fault but mine/And it was your heart on the line/I really fucked it up this time/Didn't I, my dear..."

Enjoy:
