Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXXI--Joan Shelley: Not Over by Half

A couple of years back I caught an independent film called Colewell about a woman (played with much nuance by Karen Allen) whose job as a Postal Clerk is being moved to another town, and who has to come to terms with the life and career she has had for many years coming to a close.  It was a fine character study and a film I enjoyed very much, but the cherry on top was the song played over the closing credits...which just happens to be our tune of the week.

Joan Shelley was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1985, and she's so small scale that Wikipedia doesn't even list her actual birthday.  Shelley went to the University of Georgia to be around the Athens music scene and would eventually release her debut album in 2010.  Over the course of the last dozen years, she has released nine studio albums, three albums with the all-female band Maiden Radio, and one single.  Shelley's husband, Nathan Salsburg, is a musicologist (as well as a guitarist)...which I'm sure comes in pretty handy when you make your living as a musician....

Fun Fact:  Shelley's album Electric Ursa made Rolling Stone's list of "15 Great Albums You Didn't Hear in 2014."  When you're getting noticed by Rolling Stone you know you're doing something right.

"Not Over by Half" was on Shelley's 2015 album Over and Even.  It was not released as a single, and the album did not chart.

It's been a while since I've wrote about a pure folk song, and this one is about as folk as it gets.  It's pretty much just an acoustic guitar, Shelley's vocals, and some understated harmonies.  Shelley tells the tale (tales?) of a life (lives?) at a crossroads and the spirit in all of us that keeps us pushing forward despite the difficulties (a lot like the aforementioned movie).  Shelley's got a wonderful voice and makes the most of it, and the guitar playing reminded me (for something like the millionth time) how much I love the sound of a well-played acoustic guitar.  It's also a reminder of how often music comes to us in roundabout ways, and how there will never be enough time to find all the roundabout ways.  No matter--because it's not over by half....

Lyric Sheet:  "But it's not over by half/There's a gold in your eyes blooming out through the black/And you're still standing, your hand on the map/No, it's not over, not over by half..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXX--Los Lobos with Antonio Banderas: Cancion del Mariachi (Morena De Mi Corazon)

It's not often, either now or in the past, for me to purchase a nearly twenty-dollar CD for one song, but this week's song is one of those instances where it was worth it.  I bought the soundtrack from the movie whence it came, and truthfully couldn't tell you about another song on it...but after listening to our tune of the week during my half-assed research it sounded just as good as it did back when I first heard it in the movie Desperado.

I was kind of at a loss as to how to proceed on this week's bio, as the song is a one-off for both Antonio Banderas and Los Lobos.  As I wrote about Los Lobos (sort of) in a previous Friday Night Jukebox post, I decided to go with a brief "they're still touring and recording" announcement (that's not a knock on Los Lobos who are a great band) and do a short bio of Banderas.  Banderas is originally from Spain, where he began acting in the 1980's.  Madonna brought him to the attention of American filmmakers, and he made his American debut in 1992.  In the intervening years, Banderas has had numerous roles and managed to garner Oscar, Emmy, and Tony nominations.  Near as I can tell, his performance for this week's song is the only one of his career (excluding musicals)--i.e., he's never released an album of his own material.

Fun Fact:  If you've never seen Desperado, by all means do.  It's one of those films I caught late at night and was surprised as hell at how good it was and have proceeded to watch numerous times over the years. It also has one of my favorite movie lines (Banderas character prays this in a church), "Give me the strength to be what I want, and forgive me for what I am."

"Cancion del Mariachi (Morena De Mi Corazon)" was not released as a single, and, surprisingly enough, appeared on the album Desperado:  The Soundtrack (nice touch to call it Desperado:  The Soundtrack as opposed to...the soundtrack to Desperado).  Near as I can tell, the album did not hit the charts, though Los Lobos did win a Grammy Award for the closing song on the album, "Mariachi Suite."

Written by Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, "Cancion del Mariachi" opens the movie giving us a glimpse of El Mariachi (Banderas' character) before a drug lord killed the woman he loved and shot his hand so he could never play the guitar again.  Banderas gives an impassioned performance as a man who loves his guitar, a good drink, and his brown skinned girl--and Los Lobos just nails the song instrumentally (the guitars are just to die for--especially the solo).  It's another fine example of how often musical forces inexplicably come together and make magic--and "Cancion del Mariachi" is nothing short of magical.

Lyric Sheet:  "Ay, ay, ay, ay/Ay, ay amor/Ay, mi morena de mi corazon..."

Enjoy:

A time to dance, a time to mourn

Another great is gone

Sadly, the world of rock and roll has lost another of its all-time greats with the announcement today of the passing of David Crosby at the age of eighty-one.  Crosby was a founding member of two of rock's most seminal bands, The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, and Nash (and Young a bit later), and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of both.

While I'll obviously remember Crosby's musical contributions to the bands noted above, I'll also remember him for his primal scream of "How many more?" in CSNY's "Ohio" (still the greatest protest song ever written), his never-ending promotion of liberal causes and accomplishments (a master tweeter), and his epic bitch slap of second-rate talent and perfect asshole Ted Nugent when he whined that he wasn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because of "political correctness."

While Crosby had his demons (drug addiction--eventually he did five months in prison for drug and weapons offenses), he would eventually conquer them, and late in his life he noted (quite correctly, I might add) that, "Music's a lifting force.  Music makes things better."

RIP and Godspeed, Mr. Crosby.

While I'm not a religious man, The Byrds "Turn! Turn! Turn!" with its lyrics taken from the Bible book Ecclesiastes seems an especially appropriate endpoint...Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXIX--Jason Isbell: Super 8

A little late this week--could almost call it Tuesday Night Music Club...but I'm pretty sure that name's already taken....

This week's tune once again comes courtesy of my far too cool daughter, with an assist from my cooler than cool son-in-law.  For some reason I thought it had been a lot more than ten years since they first introduced me to this week's artist...time flies when you're getting older.

Jason Isbell was born in 1979 in Green Hill (not Greenbow), Alabama, and began learning musical instruments at the age of six.  By his teens he was playing in bands, and at age twenty-two joined Drive-By Truckers (he writes as if he's completely familiar with the band...that he never heard of before doing his half-assed research last week).  Isbell released his first solo album in 2007, and the rest as they say is history.  He's won four Grammy Awards and has had several acting roles including an appearance in an upcoming Martin Scorsese film.  For his career Isbell has released eight studio albums (three of which have hit the top ten on the Billboard 200 which surprised the hell out of me), four live albums, and a whopping one single.  Isbell will begin a tour this year in June.

Fun Fact:  Isbell has been nominated for four Grammy Awards...and won four Grammy Awards.  Not sure too many people have had perfect success when it comes to Grammy nominations.

"Super 8" was included on Isbell's fourth studio album, SoutheasternThe song was not released as a single, and the album hit #23 on Billboard's top album chart.  It was also ranked at #458 on Rolling Stone's 2020 list of the Five Hundred Greatest Albums of All-Time.

In "Super 8" Jason Isbell weaves the tale of a man on a bender (while not autobiographical, Isbell is a recovering alcoholic and did spend a number of years imbibing and ingesting which he freely admits he doesn't remember clearly) ending up in a Super 8 Motel with some other man's girlfriend...and the rather unpleasant event of her boyfriend showing up screaming like a banshee and armed with a fungo (along the lines of a baseball bat for those not familiar) bat.  Isbell delivers a rollicking rockabilly performance, and his lyrics capture the moment with a simplicity that many a songwriter would die for.  I often find it compelling when a song (or a movie or a book) depicts a life situation that is far removed from your life experience yet is so well done that it still strikes a resonant chord--and that is exactly what Isbell does with "Super 8."

Lyric Sheet:  "Well they slapped me back to life/And telephoned my wife/And filled me full of Pedialyte/Saw my guts, saw my glory/It would make a great story/If I ever could remember it right..."

Enjoy:
