Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXXV--Dog's Eye View: Everything Falls Apart

One of any number of good musical trends that came out of the grunge movement of the nineties was that many pop bands had singles released that weren't your usual Top 40 fare, and this week's featured tune is a fine example.  While no one will ever conflate it with "Lithium" or "Jeremy," it's not another love song, or another dance song, or any of the often mindless drivel that hits the top of the pops (though God knows I've loved my share of mindless drivel singles).  And if you're going to be a One Hit Wonder, might as well at least make it interesting....

Dog's Eye View formed in 1994 in Los Angeles after lead singer Peter Stuart was discovered by Adam Duritz of Counting Crows fame.  The band released its debut album a year later, and a second LP two years after that.  They took a hiatus so Stuart could pursue a solo career but reunited in 2005 for a third LP.  And since then, see ya!  So the band has three albums and five singles for its career, which to an amateur musician such as myself sounds...wondrous.

"Everything Falls Apart" was the first single from their debut album, Happy Nowhere, released in 1995.  The single peaked at #66 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album reached #77 on the Billboard 200.  In Canada, however, the single hit #5--there's so many cool kids in the Great White North!

Fun Fact:  Peter Stuart says he wrote this week's featured song in fifteen minutes while hungover aboard an airplane.  Probably helps explain the song's sunny disposition....

Every now and again a song comes along that really doesn't mirror your life or your outlook (i.e., I'm far from perfect but I don't think most folks would consider me a fuck up, and while I can be as pessimistic as the next person, I don't hope for the worst) but is so well done that it doesn't much matter (seems that somewhere in my education I was taught that art transcends our personal peccadilloes).  While "Everything Falls Apart" will never make my top 100, it's still a great little single with clever lyrics, a catchy chorus, and some nice guitar and drum work all around.  Still, it's Stuart's impassioned performance that makes the song--regular readers (both of you) know of my predilection for blue-eyed soul and Stuart is one fine practitioner, bounding seamlessly between comedy and despair as he weaves his tale.  As I've noted a time of two here, every now and again it all comes together for a group of musicians, and they find themselves with a sweet, sweet piece of pop pie--just like Dog's Eye View did with this one.

Lyric Sheet:  "I met God this afternoon/Riding on an uptown train/I said, "Don't you have better things to do?"/He said, "If I do my job, what would you complain about?"...

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXXIV--Doves: Catch the Sun

I've been wracking my brain this week trying to remember what introduced me to this week's tune.  At first, I thought it was via my TV while I was living in St. Louis on one of those music channels that come with a cable subscription...until I realized I'd left St. Louis by the time the single was released.  I also thought it might be through MTV--apparently the video isn't available anymore though it was supposed to have been really cool--but I have no recollection of said really cool video.  No matter--a good tune is a good tune whether you remember where you heard it first or not....

The Doves (comprised of Jimi Goodwin and twin brothers Jez and Andy Williams) met in high school at the age of fifteen, and a few years later started a dance band called Sub Sub.  They had a couple of hits on the U.K. Singles chart in the early nineties, but in 1996 their studio burned to the ground, and they decided to start anew as an alternative band named, surprisingly enough, Doves.  It would prove to be quite the shrewd move, as their first album would be nominated for the Mercury Prize, and they would go on to have two #1 albums and a #2 in their native U.K. between 1998-2010.  The Doves took a hiatus in 2010 and didn't reform until 2018.  They released another album in 2020 and it, too, hit the top of the U.K. Albums Chart.  For their career the band has released five studio albums and seventeen singles.  While they have been quite the phenomenon in their home country, they've never had an album reach higher than #83 here in the U.S.--still they've had a pretty good gig over the past thirty some odd years.

"Catch the Sun" was the second single released from their debut album Lost SoulsThe single reached #32 in the U.K., and the album hit #16 there as well.  Neither charted in the U.S.

Fun Fact:  The Doves worked as Badly Drawn Boy's backing band for his album The House of the Bewilderbeast shortly before releasing their first album.  Oddly enough, both albums were nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2000 and the Doves lost to...Badly Drawn Boy.

When I listen to "Catch the Sun" I hear a cacophony of sounds but despite its helter-skelter musicality, it works not in spite of but because of its simplicity--it's just guitar, bass, and drums but you'd swear there's an orchestra behind it.  The song--a carpe diem, of sorts--is infused with a measured exuberance both musically and vocally that takes it many steps beyond so many other songs that seek to inspire us in our daily toils.  Throw in a chorus that's so catchy it would make the Gods of Pop weep for its aural euphoria, and you have a brilliant piece of pop that makes for another righteous addition to the annals of Friday Night Jukebox.

Lyric Sheet:  "Catch the sun, before it's gone/Here it comes, up in smoke and gone...

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXXIII--Pearl Jam: Yellow Ledbetter

This week we have another in the "Ah, But You Never Know Files" as the tune was recorded during the sessions for, but was eventually left off of, the band's ginormous debut album, TenIt would be resurrected as the B-side of the single "Jeremy" from said album, and through the years has become so popular that both fans and critics have ranked it in the band's all-time top ten songs.  Every band should be so fortunate....

I wrote about Pearl Jam's song "Black" in 2018, and in the intervening years they have released another album and begun another tour.  As there isn't much else to add to my original half-assed bio paragraph, I would like to note how amazing it is to me that four of the original five members of the band are still together more than thirty years down the road, and the fifth, drummer Matt Cameron, has been with the band since 1998.  Not many bands (though U2 and REM come to mind, and of course the Rolling Stones) have that kind of commitment not only to making music but to each other for that many years.  Kudos!

As noted above, "Yellow Ledbetter" was not released as a single and did not appear on an album until Pearl Jam released Lost Dogs (a collection of B-sides and outtakes) in 2003.  It also appeared on Rearview (Greatest Hits 1991-2003).

Fun Fact:  I am notoriously bad at hearing lyrics and was surprised to find as I did my half-assed research this week that the first line of the song does not contain the words "yellow ledbetter" and instead is just the words "yellow letter."  Thank God for lyric sheets....

"Yellow Ledbetter" started with music by bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Mike McCready, and Eddie Vedder created lyrics on the fly as they were recording it.  There is much debate over the song's meaning, though the most prominent theory is that it's about a friend of Vedder's whose brother was killed in a war the U.S. fought overseas.  Vedder's vocals are somewhat mumbled, and he's been known to change the lyrics in concert--add it all together and it shows just how amazing the song truly is.  I mean, no one is certain what it means, the lyrics can change, and the vocals are almost impossible to decipher, and still it's among the most popular songs Pearl Jam has ever done.  I would be remiss if I did not mention McCready's gorgeous and otherworldly guitar work on the song, which further adds to the mystique of the song.  In the end, it's one of those rare pieces of music that carry you away literally on its spirit--and, oh, what a beautiful journey it is.

Lyric Sheet:  "Oh, yeah can you see them/Out on the porch/Yeah, but they don't wave/I see them.."
