Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLV--Train: Meet Virginia
After my first marriage ended, I suffered from insomnia for a number of years and as a result spent many a late night channel surfing in the dark in the living room of my first post-divorce apartment. As such, I came across many tunes (such as this week's) on either MTV or VH-1 that have been, or will be, featured here on Friday Night Jukebox. While I certainly wouldn't endorse it as a good way to find new music, if you're one of those people always looking for a silver lining...there you go.
Train formed in my old stomping grounds, the city of San Francisco, in 1993. Over the course of their first few years they recruited the members that would make up their original incarnation, and self-released their first album. In 1998 Columbia Records took a chance on them and it paid off handsomely, as the band had its first of many hits to come. Over the last twenty-eight years, Train has sold over ten million albums and thirty million tracks. For their career, they have released ten studio albums (with five hitting the top ten) and thirty-four singles (with three reaching the top ten). The band is still recording and touring, with lead singer Pat Monahan being the only original member remaining (though some past members continue to play periodically with whatever current line-ups the band is presenting).
Fun Fact: Train's mega-hit, "Hey Soul Sister" is the greatest selling single in the history of Columbia Records, which considering that Columbia has been around longer than I have (sixty-two years and counting) and has had numerous substantial artists (Aretha, Dylan, and Springsteen come immediately to mind) is quite a feat.
"Meet Virginia" was released in 1999 as the second single from their major label debut LP, the cleverly titled Train. The single would be the first hit of their career, reaching #20 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album peaked at a rather pedestrian #76.
Train is one of those bands that ordinarily I would shrug my shoulders at, being just so much vanilla pudding, but for some odd ass reason I find myself with five of their songs on my Spotify playlist and can honestly say for all their generic flavor I find them quite tasty. "Meet Virginia" was the first of those singles, and it laid the groundwork for most of those to come. Monahan has a voice that's tailor made for singing rocking pop songs, and the band is more than capable of providing the chops and the hooks to keep you singing along. With this week's song, the band tells the tale of a free spirited woman with both a heart of gold and a head full of questions that might never be answered. It's a nice study, and the band fills her and her story with just the right amounts of passion and compassion. It's a real gift to have the ability to write a song that sounds like new twenty-two years down the road, and Train has done that for me with a song that sounds just as good today as it did when I first heard it late one sleepless night in a dark living room....

Frank Niceley, a republican state senator from Tennessee, took time this week on the floor of the Tennessee legislature to tell his constituents that the U.S. Civil War was still being fought and the South was "winning" (which should come as a hell of a surprise to Robert E. Lee, the leader of the Confederate Army who surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, and is currently rotting in hell for being a racist slave owner and a traitor).
While it would be easy to point out that Mr. Niceley's definition of "winning" would include vastly underpaying Tennessee's workers, his state being dependent on the federal government's largesse for its financial survival, and Tennessee's poverty level ranking in the top ten of U.S. states, the larger question--and especially so for African-Americans--is what Mr. Niceley is so obviously beating around the bush about: the desire of certain southerners--and also of the republican party's base voters--to see a return to slavery, especially one that once again puts African-Americans in chains.
In the end, America's Civil War was fought to keep people of color under the thumb of Southern slavery, and that is a battle that Southerners and the republican party are still fighting for one hundred and fifty-six years after real Americans ended the scourge of the slave trade in America.

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLIV--Rod Stewart: Oh No Not My Baby
I knew a little about Rod Stewart's catalog when I started managing a Camelot Music store in 1981, but a few months after I started I became considerably more familiar with the depth of his hitmaking, thanks to a customer who brought back a defective (that wasn't so defective) copy of a best of compilation LP from his days on the Mercury label. In fact, it was so good I not only bought it, but the second compilation from those years as well, and spend a good chunk of the early eighties listening to the both of them.
I wrote about Rod Stewart around a million years ago in the third ever post for Friday Night Jukebox. While the earlier posts didn't have quite the biography of the newer ones, I'll still keep this mercifully short as plenty of writers better than I have covered his illustrious career. I will make note, though, that since his humble beginning busking on the street with a harmonica in 1962, Stewart has won multiple Grammy Awards, been elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice (solo and as a member of Faces), been elected into the U.K. Music Hall of Fame, and been knighted. He's also sold over 250 million records, and has had ten #1 LP's and six #1 singles in his native U.K., as well as four #1's of each here in the U.S. And to top it off, he'll be releasing his thirty-first album sometime later this year.
Fun Fact: The first solo album Stewart released did not chart in his native U.K. The second one hit #62. Of the next twenty-eight he released, twenty-seven of them reached the top ten in the U.K., and the one that missed peaked at #11. That is one hell of a streak....
"Oh No Not My Baby" (which for whatever reason does not make the usual use of punctuation marks) was written by the great Carole King and her one-time husband Gerry Goffin in 1964. It was originally a hit that same year for Maxine Brown, peaking at #24. Rod Stewart recorded his version in 1973 while still a member of the Faces, but it was released as a solo effort even though he was backed by them in the studio. It was never released on a studio album. The single hit #6 in the U.K. (so many cool kids in Great Britain), and #59 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100.
With "Oh No Not My Baby" Rod Stewart (who produced the single himself) took the best of sixties pop, added the best of seventies pop, and created a blue-eyed soul gem. There haven't been too many rock and roll vocalists who can do vocally what Stewart can, and he makes his voice into an instrument of its own as he sings the tale of a man whose friends and family tell him not to trust his lady love, but who's certain that they're oh so wrong about her. The Faces--with the help of a string section and possibly some horns--make a musical panoply in the background of Stewart's plaintive wailing (especially impressed with the drumming which give the song a nice funk groove) that glues the other pieces together. If you're an aficionado of pure sweet pop--I know I am--this one is right up there with the best of what pop has to offer.
