Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXIII--Seals and Crofts: Summer Breeze

Once again, a week late and a million dollars short....

There are certain songs that conjure an era, and if you were a child of the 70's this week's tune is a reminder of the early seventies when the last vestiges of what the sixties sprang to rock and roll had not yet been corrupted by corporate rock.  Plus, the song was ubiquitous--especially, though not surprisingly, in the summer....

Seals and Crofts (Jim Seals and Dash Crofts) were both born in Texas and took a pretty convoluted path to music stardom.  They met and began playing together in various incarnations in their native Texas before moving to Los Angeles to try their hand at music in Southern California. The bounced around from band to band (at one point Crofts returned to Texas), before settling in as a duo in 1969.  They released two albums with little success before landing a contract with Warner Brothers, after which their fourth album was a great commercial and critical success.  They had a number of hits in the seventies, but by 1980 their career had run its course and they parted.  They reunited in 1991 for a concert tour, and again in 2004 when they released their last album.  Seals was the brother of Dan Seals of England Dan and John Ford Coley  and a successful solo country career, and the brothers performed together in their later years.  Crofts released a solo record.  For their career, Seals and Crofts released twelve studio albums (with two reaching the top ten), and sixteen singles (three of which hit the top ten).  The duo were devoted practitioners of the Bahai Faith, and would preach its message at their concerts and through their songwriting.  Sadly, Jim Seals passed away in 2022 after an extended illness.

Fun Fact:  All three of their songs that reached the top ten on the Billboard 100 peaked at number six.  Which as a religious pair had to be a bit odd, as their top ten single positions were 666, the number of the beast....

"Summer Breeze" was the lead single from their aptly entitled 1972 album, Summer BreezeThe single reached--you guessed it--#6 (with a bullet!), while the album would hit #7 on the Billboard 200.  "Summer Breeze" was ranked #13 on Rolling Stone's list of the all-time best summer songs.

"Summer Breeze" opens with a nice slice of acoustic guitar before the pair begins singing, and the song's infectious melody just wraps itself around you and fills you with the soul of summer.  Their harmonies are luscious, the break is a jolt to the senses, and the chorus is as catchy as all hell.  As you listen, you'll notice a tiny tinkle...which happens to be the sound of a children's toy piano.  But the creme de la creme of the song, is that even fifty years down the road, every time I see or hear the word jasmine (be it the Disney Princess or scent or food related) the chorus of the song pops immediately into my head.  Which, in addition to being a tad bizarre, also tells you all you need to know about the enduring nature of this timeless tune.

Lyric Sheet:  "Summer breeze makes me feel fine/Blowing through the jasmine in my mind..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXII--Sarah McLachlan: Ice Cream

Once again, I'm a week late...someday I'll get caught up (or not).

As I've gotten older there seems to be a number of artists--like this week's featured artist--that as I listen to them it seems as if I should have devoted more of my time to their talents, especially artists who are a little after my formative years musically (Dave Matthews, John Mayer, and Jack Johnson also come to mind).  Perhaps it's a lack of time--raising a family and working to provide for them take up a good bit of mine--or maybe it's just a generational bias, but each of the artists I've listed above have all had a tune that I loved, much like this week's tune....

Sarah McLachlan was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1968 and was placed with a family who later adopted her.  She began playing music at the age of four (ukulele), and studied classical piano, classical guitar, and voice while in High School.  She formed her first band while still a teenager, and after one performance was offered a contract.  Her parents made her a) finish high school, and b) a year of college before accepting the offer and moving to Vancouver--and the rest, as they say, is history.  McLachlan released her first album at the ripe old age of nineteen in 1987, and in the thirty-six years since then has gone one to sell over forty million albums, win twelve Juno Awards, three Grammys, and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.  For her career, she has released nine studio albums (with four #1's in her native Canada and five top ten albums in the U.S.), and fifty-three singles (with one number one and nine top tens in Canada as well as five hitting the top ten here in the States).  McLachlan was also one of the founders of the immensely popular Lilith Fair tours of the nineties and has been quite active with numerous charities.  She continues to record and tour.

"Ice Cream" was released as the tenth song on McLachlan's 1993 album, the rather fallibly named Fumbling Towards EcstasyThe song was not originally released as a single, but a live version of it reached #9 in her native Canada (so many cool kids north of the border!).  The album hit #5 in the Great White North, and #50 on the Billboard 200.

Not really sure I know fuck all of what this song is about, but I suspect it has something to do with the highs and lows of love.  Still, McLachlan delivers a virtuoso performance--her vocals are spot on and her piano gives the song a wistful ambiance, but with just enough of the marvel that is love to keep it honest.  I never really noticed until I was reading some comments about the song, but as you listen give careful attention to the drums--just a magnificent rhythmic display.  In the end, though, the wonder of the song is how so much is said with so little--the feelings it evokes in its sparseness, both lyrically and musically, is amazing.

Lyric Sheet:  "Your love is better than ice cream/Better than anything else that I've tried/Your love is better than ice cream/Everyone here knows how to fight..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXI--The Rivieras: California Sun

Better late than never is what I always say....

My introduction to this week's tune wasn't this version--it was the Ramones cover version (though truth be told, our featured song is actually a cover version, too).  After years of hearing the Ramones cover, I finally got around to listening to the original and found it to be...amazing.  While the Ramones rendition has its charms (three chord thrashing guitar, furious drumming, Joey's fevered vocals), the 1964 version is a nice slice of sixties pop pie....

The Rivieras (they eventually named themselves after the General Motors luxury car the Buick Riviera) formed while its original members were still in high school in 1962, in that hot bed of rock and roll, South Bend, Indiana.  They recorded a single, managed to get it distributed, and had a hit.  Before they could even record their first LP, two of its original members joined the Marines.  The band would change members frequently (the draft and parental desires for them to attend college), before disbanding in 1966.  In their short career, they released two studio albums, and eleven singles.  Some band members would reunite under the name Wildcat from 2000-2010 but the band is now officially defunct.

"California Sun" was originally released as a single only in 1964, but after its success was the lead cut on their debut album, Let's Have a PartyThe single would peak at #5 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, and I was unable to discern if the album ever charted.

Fun Fact:  Some people consider "California Sun" to be the last American rock and roll hit before the British Invasion.  When it peaked at number five, the #1 song on the charts was a little ditty you might have heard of:  "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles....

As you listen to "California Sun," keep in mind that the young men recording it were still in fucking high school!  It's not like George Martin was in the studio to produce it for them--they did it themselves.  Just a killer rat-a-tat guitar, pulsating drums, a rambunctious organ (and its mid-song solo), and devil-may-care vocals that capture all the hope and joy that is our west coast.  All I know is the more I hear it, the more I'm all in for heading out to that warm California sun.  An absolute triumph of youth.

Lyric Sheet:  "And they walk, and I'll walk/They twist and I'll twist/They shimmy and I'll shimmy/They fly and I'll fly/Well, they're out there a-havin' fun/In that warm California sun..."

Enjoy:
