Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCXCIV--The Alarm: Sixty Eight Guns

This week's featured artist started off with back-to-back dynamite singles and began drawing comparisons (and arguably so) to another young band at that time:  U2.  The years weren't nearly as kind to them (at least commercially and critically) as they have been to U2, but the rest of us will always have two wondrous anthemic gems to enjoy....

The Alarm formed in 1981 in Rhyl, Wales (funny how the memory plays tricks on us--until I did my weekly half-assed research, I would have sworn that, like U2, they were from Ireland).  The band had some success early in their career with a number of hit singles and LPS (more so in their native U.K., but they did have a modicum of success here in the U.S.) and were the opening act for both the Pretenders and U2 at different stages.  By 1991 the Alarm had folded but founding member Mike Peters reformed the band in a different incarnation in 1999 (and changed their name to The Alarm MM++) and the second version of the band is performing to this day.  The original cast of the Alarm released five albums with all five reaching the top 35 in Great Britain (with a best at #6) and at least hitting the charts in America (with one landing at #39).  The Alarm MM++ has released fourteen studio albums.  The band has also had a top twenty single in the U.K., and one single here in the States that peaked at #50.

"Sixty Eight Guns" was originally released only as a single in 1983, before being added to their debut album Declaration in 1984.  Both were the band's best showing in the U.K., with the single hitting #17 and the album #36.  They would go on to have higher charting success in the U.S. with other recordings as "Sixty Eight Guns" only hit #106 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, and Declaration would only hit #50 on the Billboard 200.

When the Alarm first started, they were a politically and socially conscious band which was a natural for me at a time when Ronald Reagan was beginning the republican party's war on anyone who wasn't a white Christian male.  While "Sixty Eight Guns" is of a different political stripe than the ones we Americans were facing in the early eighties (War on the Poor, War on Unions, codifying their racism-- among many others), it's still a song of defiance and that was enough when far too many Americans were all too happy to sell their souls for platitudes from a second-rate actor.  There was power in the vocals, there was power in the music, there was power in the lyrics--and that power was us fighting for the destiny that was America's better angels and not the trappings of republican fascism.  Sadly we're still fighting it, but as long as they haven't silenced our soundtrack they haven't silenced us and we can still make a difference.  Power to the people, right on....

Lyric Sheet:  "And now they are trying to take my life away/Forever young I cannot stay/Hey!/On every corner I can see them there/They don't know my name, they don't know my kind..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCXCIII--America: Daisy Jane

There are any number of music artists that I've enjoyed throughout my life that I would consider "Greatest Hits" artists or bands, that is solo performers or groups whose greatest hits collections are the sum total of my knowledge of their music catalogs (Bachman-Turner Overdrive, ELO, the Spinners, War, and a holy host of others).  While that may be my loss (for missing any number of album tracks that may be little known gems), it's also worked out quite well as I've been blessed with hearing countless songs that I love again and again--much like the songs I've enjoyed from this week's featured musical artist.

America, oddly enough, actually formed in London--and making it even stranger, they're all actually Americans (their fathers were USAF personnel stationed in the U.K. capital and they met while in high school there).  Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley, and Dan Peek had a hell of a run through seventies (Dan Peek found God and left the band in 1977 to become a Christian artist) notching numerous hits and touring the whole wide world.  For their career, America has released 18 studio albums (their last in 2015) with four of them reaching the top ten (in keeping with this week's theme their Greatest Hits is far and away their best-selling effort) with one of them hitting the number one slot.  They've also released 47 singles with seven of them peaking in the top ten and two climbing all the way to the top of the chart.  Sadly, Dan Peek passed away in 2011, but Bunnell and Beckley continue to have a loyal following on the oldies circuit.

"Daisy Jane" was released in 1975 as the second single from their album Hearts.  The song reached #20 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200.

Fun Fact:  In addition to producing the aforementioned song (and album), noted "Fifth Beatle" and music producer extraordinaire George Martin plays the piano on the tune as well.

Yeah, this one isn't going into the Ball Out Rocker Hall of Fame.  Written by Beckley, the song tells the tale of a man who left behind a good woman to go out and see the world...who has finally realized that she's the only world he needed to see and is hoping she still loves him.  Beckley has said that there is no Daisy Jane, and at the time of writing the song had never even been to Memphis (he said he loosely based it on the song "Hazey Jane" by recent FNJ honoree Nick Drake).  The heartbeats that open the song are a nice touch, and the song has the lush production that George Martin is often known for--strings, the featured piano, and some fantastic harmonies by a band known for its harmonies.  My favorite part, though, is the how Martin takes the band softly through the stanzas before unleashing the booming chorus which captures all the hope the narrator is feeling...and reminds us just how precious love can be.

Lyric Sheet:  "Well I've been picking it up around me/Daisy, I think I'm sane/And I'm awful glad/And I guess you're really to blame..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCXCII--Peter Frampton: Do You Feel Like We Do

For the last few years during football season, my youngest son and I often drive about an hour to my brother's home to watch the 49ers play (living outside Detroit you don't get to see many of their games unless, like my brother, you buy the NFL package each season).  When we initially began making the trek, I was listening to this week's artist's greatest hits, and over time, my son became as big a fan of this week's tune as his Dad...and it's become a tradition that whenever we drive to my brother's for a Niners game, we listen to this tune first before listening to the rest of Frampton's greatest hits....

Over the course of the last 56 years, Peter Frampton has most certainly seen the ups and downs of being a rock and roll star in all its actuality.  He had his first band by the age of 12 (he went to the same school as David Bowie and the two had their bands appear on the same bill at their school, as well as playing music together during lunch), had a taste of success (three top twenty hits) at age 16 with the Herd in his native U.K., and then joined supergroup Humble Pie before going solo.  Frampton had little commercial success with his first four albums before a live album turned him into a superstar.  His follow-up LP went platinum but was considered a disappointment, he starred in the film version of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (nearly universally despised) and suffered major injuries in a car wreck which helped lead to a drug addiction problem.  Frampton eventually cleaned up and while he never again achieved the height of success he had in the late seventies (though he did win a Grammy), he's been making music for over fifty years now and you can't beat that.  For his career Frampton has released 18 studio albums (with one reaching #2), four live albums (with one mega smash), and 24 singles (three of which hit the top ten).

"Do You Feel Like We Do" was the third single released from his career making hit, Frampton Comes Alive!.  The single reached #10 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, while the LP would hit #1 on the Billboard 200 for a total of ten weeks and eventually sold over 11 million copies.

Fun Fact:  When the single was released back when I was still but a wee lad, there's a point in the song where Frampton uses a voice box for an extended riff and many of us young folks thought he had a line where he says/sings "I want to fuck you" which naturally upped its coolness quotient among a bunch of impressionable high schoolers.  With the passage of years and many a web site devoted to music lyrics, we've all come to sadly realize that Frampton actually says "I want to thank you...."

"Do You Feel Like We Do" is not going to be everyone's cup of tea.  It's fourteen minutes long (the single version was seven minutes for radio), it's a live cut, and about 75% of it is just jamming.  But if you're looking for an exquisite taste of seventies arena rock, man this is it.  The song is anthemic, the chorus is a call to arms, and the guitar playing (Frampton is often underrated as a guitarist) is to die for.  I've been listening to it for 46 years now and it still makes me whip out the air guitar and jam away.  For a child of the seventies, it doesn't get much better.

Lyric Sheet:  "Champagne for breakfast and a Sherman in my hand/Peach top, peach tails, never fails/Must have been a dream I don't believe where I've been/Come on, let's do it again..."

Enjoy:
