Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXXXV--Huey Lewis and the News: Trouble in Paradise

It's the late show....

My coolness quotient, never that high to begin with, takes a hit this week with the revelation that my introduction to this week's tune was from its appearance on an album thrown together (more or less) for charity.  While the nobility of its cause (famine in Africa) is beyond reproach, the single that spawned the album--and most of the album for that matter--are not among rock and roll's finest.  That being said, I do believe there is a second song from said album that will be featured in a future post.  Exit stage right from Coolsville....

Huey Lewis and the News formed in 1979 in my forever home of San Francisco.  While their first album generated good reviews, it didn't sell, but the next four more than made up for it with a top fifteen, back to back # 1's, and another top fifteen.  They faded slowly but surely with their next several releases, though the band continued to tour regularly for many years.  They have sold over thirty million albums, won a Grammy and been nominated for two more, and have won thirty Bammys (Bay Area Music Awards, now known as the Californian).  For their career, Huey Lewis and the News have released ten studio albums, three compilation albums, and one live album.  They have also released thirty-nine singles, with ten of them reaching the top ten, three of which went to #1.  While the band hasn't broken up, they haven't performed since 2018, sadly because lead singer and frontman Huey Lewis was diagnosed with Meniere's disease, an inner ear disorder, which makes his performing impossible.

Fun Fact:  The band's career really took off when their song "The Power of Love" was featured in the megahit movie, Back to the FutureThey also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Song.

"Trouble in Paradise" was originally released on their debut album, the ever so cleverly named Huey Lewis and the News.  It was not released as a single, and the album did not chart.  The version I'm featuring this week is a live version from the charity album We Are the WorldIt was once again not released as a single (for obvious reasons), but the album would go on to reach #1.

While I can't say I was ever a big fan of Huey Lewis and the News, being a pop music aficionado they did have a song or two that I enjoyed.  I chose the live version of this week's song because it seemed more vibrant to me than the studio version, though the difference between the two is minimal.  The band is tight, Lewis has a good voice for power pop, and the subject matter of the song (the evils of drugs) is a notch above their usual fare.  Lewis' lyrics do a nice job of questioning what drugs have done to a once promising life without getting preachy--and with the singer admitting he's been there a time or two himself.  While doing my listening this week, I couldn't help but wonder how I'd never noticed how central the saxophone was to the song--it's wails and screeching mimic not only the travails of the user, but also the friends and family left in his wake.  In the end, it's another pop gem for the annals of Friday Night Jukebox--albeit a pop gem with a message.

Lyric Sheet:  "American son he's not very old/An American dream that's never been sold/The smile on his face is his last disguise/We've got trouble in paradise..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXXXIV--The Clash: Hitsville U.K.

What's all this fuss about being late?

This week's tune came from the much-anticipated follow-up album to The Clash's stunning masterpiece, London Calling.  It was a three-record set, sprawling and experimental and adventurous...and it took a while to grow on me.  But once it did, holy shit, what a record.  Always reminded me (not musically, just in its disparate songs) of The Beatles' unwieldy but brilliant White Album (and Lord have mercy would The Clash have ripped my heart out of my chest for that comparison).  And in its disparity, it yielded one of their more pop oriented songs, with a tongue-in-cheek nod to Motown....

I wrote about The Clash in Volume CCXXX, and as Joe Strummer hasn't risen from the dead (not from lack of trying, I'm sure), and Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, and Topper Headon have repeatedly said they have no desire to reunite or go on an oldies tour (like The Clash have anything that could remotely be called an oldie), I'll just leave it at the very good bio (if I do say so myself) of "The only band that matters" that I wrote for their first post.

"Hitsville U.K." was the second single released from the band's revolutionary named three LP set, Sandinista! (exclamation point theirs, not mine--the Sandinistas were a revolutionary left-wing Nicaraguan political group).  The single hit #56 in the U.K. but did not chart in America.  The album reached #19 in Great Britain and #24 here in the States.  It was also ranked at #323 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time."

Fun Fact:  Despite the fact that Joe Strummer sang the vast majority of their songs, somehow I've managed to pick two that were sung by Mick Jones (though this week he is ably supported by his then girlfriend Ellen Foley).

Every now and again, a song has a small but indelible moment.  In "Hitsville U.K.," it's about halfway through right before the instrumental break when Jones says (with his English accent) "So 'it it."  Can't ever listen to the song without waiting for that two second blip--it was one of the first things I noticed about the song when I first heard it some forty-three years ago.  The song, its title a nod to Motown's nickname "Hitsville U.S.A.," is a paean to the then burgeoning indie music scene in Great Britain, and how it had opened up the music business for everyday boys and girls.  It features nice vocal play between Foley and Jones, some funky ass bass work from Simonon, and is, much like my last post on The Clash, much more pop oriented than their usual fare.  Wonder why I'd like those two so much....

Lyric Sheet:  (Remember)/They say true talent will always emerge in time/When lightning hits Small Wonder/It's Fast Rough Factory time..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXXXIII--Rebekah: Sin So Well

Oh, goodie, only six days late....

Sometime during the pandemic, I started going through all of my old mix tapes to see which songs I'd once liked that I didn't have on CD so I could download them from Spotify.  It was kind of surprising that there were a number (not a lot, but a few) of songs that I just could not remember.  I began searching music sites for them, and, to a song, they all ended up being songs that a) came back to me and b) I realized there was a good reason I'd put them on one of my mix tapes.  This week's tune was one such song--I originally discovered it via a compilation that Hits magazine put out called Hits Post Modern Syndrome:  Closing Time, one of a collection the magazine released numerous issues of....

At one point while doing my half-assed weekly research, I thought this was going to be the first Friday Night Jukebox post where I had absolutely no information about the week's artist.  But, after numerous searches, I finally found Rebekah also goes by Rebecca Johnson and Rebecca Jordan and was able to find a Wikipedia entry.  While Rebekah, originally from Cleveland, hasn't had much in the way of commercial success, she's done enough to keep playing music for the past twenty-six years which beats hell out of bagging groceries for a living.  She's released five studio albums, appeared in four movies (including the Best Picture nominee, As Good as It Gets), and probably most importantly from a financial standpoint, co-wrote the song "Beautiful Disaster" for Kelly Clarkson.  All in all, a career that many a failed musician would love to have had.

"Sin So Well" was the first single released from Rebekah's debut album, the well-advised title, Remember to Breathe.  The single hit #80 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album, near as I can tell, did not chart.  It should be noted, though, that in the above link AllMusic gave the album one hell of a review.

Regular readers (all three of you) will recall that emaycee has quite the fondness for pop songs sung by female vocalists...and "Sin So Well" checks both boxes.  Rebekah has a smooth voice that reaches right down into her soul, and her vocals capture the sin in the song...so well.  It's got a catchy chorus, some nice guitar and bass work, and a risquΓ© lyric or two for those who like the occasional double entendre.  Just a marvelous pop single.

Lyric Sheet:  "Mama doesn't like when I sin so well/Heaven's kinda far/But I swear that when I'm coming it's close..."
