Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDVIII--John Prine: Souvenirs

Like so many things in life, the beauty of this week's featured tune came to me much later in life than it should have.  I first heard it in the early nineties, but it wasn't until the middle of the last decade while on one of my periodic John Prine listening fests, on a cold winter's night driving home from my job at the thrift shop, that I listened to the lyrics in its first stanza with my much older ears while sitting in another of too many traffic jams, and thought, "Holy shit--there's a lot more to this song than I've noticed before...."  I played it several more times while I sat stuck in a sea of cars, and the song has become a favorite of mine, and, even better, a never-ending source of wonder ever since that fateful night.....

I wrote about Prine's song "Christmas in Prison" in a December 2015 post, and I wrote about his song "Sam Stone" in a December of 2016 Friday Night Jukebox.  Unlike last week's post about the Faces, John Prine's bio has had some significant (and not all good) changes since then.  On the good end, Prine had his two highest charting LPs, 2016's For Better or Worse which hit #30, and The Tree of Forgiveness, released in 2018, which gave Prine his lone top ten hit, landing at #5.  He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2019.  On the sad end, after years of poor health (including beating cancer) Prine contracted the COVID-19 virus and never recovered, passing away in April of 2020.

"Souvenirs" was featured on Prine's second album, the 1972 release Diamonds in the Rough.  It was never released as a single (though it should have been) and the album would peak at #148 on the Billboard 200.

Fun Fact:  Prine first began performing regularly at a club in Chicago called Fifth Peg.  He didn't want people hearing the same songs every Thursday when he performed so he tried to add a new song each week.  Prine said he wrote "Souvenirs" in a '65 Malibu while en route to one of his Thursday night performances--which for me makes the song just that much more amazing.

From the acoustic guitar interplay between Prine and frequent collaborator Steve Goodman at the beginning, "Souvenirs" sets forth a folk and bluegrass-tinged tale of the fleeting nature of loss.  Prine's lyrics (maybe the best of his career and that's saying something) subtly paint a picture that effortlessly moves from the lost joys of childhood to the heartbreak of lost love.  Prine's vocals are heartfelt without being maudlin, and the harmonies he and Goodman share in the chorus are superb.  I'm not one to ascribe literary qualities to a song, but "Souvenirs" is much like a well written short story--it's three and a half minutes of us watching a man look into the mirror that reflects his life...and his sorrow for how quickly so much of it has disappeared without his even knowing.

Lyric Sheet:  "All the snow has turned to water/Christmas days have come and gone/Broken toys and faded colors/Are all that's left to linger on..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDVII--Faces: Stay with Me

I spent a little bit of time during my college years trying to find this week's featured tune on a Rod Stewart album (sounds quaint, but this would have been many years before the internet), only to find out after I began working at Camelot Music that Stewart had been in another band and that they had actually recorded it.  I'm sure it's shown up on one of his many hits packages through the years, but it forced me to give a Faces greatest hits collection a listen, and that was quite fortuitous as they turned out to be a hell of a band in their own right.

I wrote about the Faces in Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCXXVI, and precious little has changed about the band's history or its remaining members who are still alive (though it was reported last year that those three members were recording new music, but nothing has as of yet been released).  Otherwise, Rod Stewart is still touring and making music, Ronnie Wood is still with the Rolling Stones, and Kenney Jones is doing whatever it is that old fart wealthy drummers who whine about their taxes do.

"Stay with Me" was the first single from their 1971 album, the wondrously titled A Wink Is as Good as a Nod...to a Blind Horse (would easily rank in the top ten of all time cleverest album titles).  The single reached #17 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, and #6 in their native U.K. but it's best showing was at #4 in Canada (so many cool kids in the Great White North!).  The album went to #2 in Great Britain and #6 here in the States.

"Stay with Me" is a rollicking number that tells the somewhat tawdry tale of a man asking a woman to stay the night...but to make sure she's gone in the morning.  Somewhat oddly for a hit single, the band--most notably Ronnie Wood on guitar--plays some balls out rock and roll for almost a minute before Stewart's vocals kick in.  Throughout the song, the band absolutely shines--Ian McLagan on keyboards, Wood on guitar, and Jones on the drums literally push the accelerator to the floor from beginning to end.  All in all, though, the song is a perfect illustration of why Rod Stewart is considered one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time.  With swagger ("Guitar!") and humor ("What was your name again?"), Stewart sings from the gut, and from the heart, and electrifies the band note by note and word by word.  A truly great performance from a truly great band.

Lyric Sheet:  "Red lips, hair, and fingernails/I hear you're a mean old Jezebel/Let's go upstairs and read my Tarot cards..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDVI--The Spaniels: Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite

Literally spent an hour this week trying to remember which movie I had seen that led me to add this week's tune to the pantheon of tunes that make up Friday Night Jukebox.  It's Wikipedia entry lists American Graffiti and Three Men and a Baby as movies where it was featured (if you've seen the latter you probably won't forget its placement), but I haven't seen either in years.  Eventually I gave up--my guess is a week from now it will pop into my mind. No matter, if nothing else it gave me an intro for this week's post....

The Spaniels formed in Gary, Indiana in 1952 at their high school in Gary, Indiana.  They are considered the first successful doo-wop group to come out of the Midwest.  As was the custom in their day, they were mostly a singles band that toured constantly on what was once known as the Chitlin Circuit.  Unfortunately, their label, Vee-Jay, went bankrupt in 1966 and the band stopped performing.  They reunited in 1969, had another hit, before parting again in 1970.  The Spaniels had two competing incarnations for many years on the oldies circuit.  Sadly, all of the original members have passed away.

Fun Fact:  The Spaniels are considered pioneers in pop music by some because they were the first group to spotlight their frontman with his own microphone while the remaining members shared a second one.

"Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite" was released as a single in 1954.  As it was in the day when albums were an afterthought, there was no album release, though it would be released on a number of hits packages and oldies collections through the years.  The song hit #5 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard R & B Chart. A version by the much whiter McGuire Sisters hit # 8 on Billboard's then version of its current Hot 100.

It's a testament to the talents of the five men who made up the Spaniels how in just two short years since their beginning they made a record as wondrous as "Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite."  The harmonies are as good as any I've ever heard, and the segues into the solo verses are as smooth as silk.  The bass singer's intro (and add ons ) to the chorus, as well as the sweet but soft laments of an electric guitar are fine moments, as well.  And when you add in lyrics about not wanting to say good night to your lovely lady...well, it's a doo wop dream.

Lyric Sheet:  "I hate to leave you I really must say/Oh, good night sweetheart, good night..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDV--The Godfathers: Birth, School, Work, Death

Really need to work on my time management--more than a week late might be the worst showing ever.

Every now and again a song comes out of nowhere and provides a much-needed breath of fresh air--which is exactly what this week's tune provided at a time (the late eighties) when for me there wasn't much of interest gaining airplay.  While I would in no way claim the song led the way to the Alternative craze that would sweep America and much of the world in just a few short years, in retrospect it certainly seems like it was at least a harbinger of the great music to come....

The Godfathers formed in Lonon in 1985 and had secured an indie record deal by the next year and released their first album.  Their second and third albums were the only records they released that charted (and neither was exactly a hit--didn't even chart in America), but the band managed to stay together for fifteen years before disbanding in 2000.  The Godfathers reunited in 2008 (the band has seen numerous personnel changes with twenty-one different people being one of the five members at one time or another), and are still touring and recording, having released their latest LP this year.  For their career, they released nine studio albums (highest charting was #49 in the U.K.), three live albums, and six compilations.  They have also released six EP's and 18 singles (with four songs charting in the U.K. and one in the States).

"Birth, School, Work, Death" was the first single released from their second album, the rather inventively titled Birth, School, Work, DeathThe single never charted in the U.K. but was their biggest (and only) hit in America, hitting #38 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100.  The album reached #80 in Great Britian, but did not chart (at least that I could find) in the U.S.

There's something to be said for simplicity in music (and often in life, as well) and in "Birth, School, Work, Death" The Godfathers make the utmost of the electric guitar, the bass guitar, and a set of drums.  The bass and drums literally drive the song from beginning to end and the electric guitars fill up the rest of the empty space with a reverberating pulse that reaches right down into your soul (a thoroughly enjoyable guitar solo is thrown in just to make the song that much better).  Lyrically the song is an angry rebuke to the scourge that was Margaret Thatcher--and the cruel soulless world that she (and her partner in pathetic, Ronald Reagan) envisioned.  Nihilistic?  Sure, but it beats the living hell out of drudging off to work every day as just another cog in a fascist's dream.

Lyric Sheet:  "I've been abused and I've been confused/And I've kissed Margaret Thatcher's shoes/I've been high and I've been low/And I don't know where to go..."

Enjoy:
