America is falling, too--it's just taking a little longer |
Boris Johnson, the U.K. Prime Minister, gave a speech this week wherein he claimed that the terrorist attacks in America on 9/11/01 failed to shake our belief in freedom and democracy, and did not divide us. His statement was nothing more than platitudinous bullshit--and especially rich coming from a man whose nation recently decided to disassociate itself from the European union, in large part driven by a right wing that sent their crazy into overdrive beginning on...9/12/01.
Whether or not Osama bin Laden, as he orchestrated the September 11th attacks, foresaw the depths to which the republican party would sink (my guess is--after seeing the circus they made of Bill Clinton's impeachment over an extramarital affair--he knew) is debatable, but his plan to discombobulate America worked to a tee. Make no mistake--bin Laden was not a fool and knew there was no way Al Qaeda could ever come close to destroying America, but that America was perfectly capable of destroying itself.
Witness George W. Bush's foray into Afghanistan, which started as an exercise to capture and kill bin Laden but which became a multitrillion dollar disaster because Bush and his cabal turned it into a failed effort at nation building (the U.K. and Russia's failed efforts in the 20the century should have been a major clue that it was a fool's errand). Republicans used fear of brown people to push through electoral victories in 2002 before embarking on another multitrillion boondoggle in Iraq, and the fissures between Americans at a time when we should have been united began to show. Bush badly mangled the response to Hurricane Katrina (and republicans again showed just how little they cared about anybody who wasn't white), and then obliviously led us into the biggest economic calamity since the Great Depression., both because he was too worried about revenge to worry about other dangers to America.
Every single one of these wounds was self-inflicted by a party hell bent on executing its increasingly misguided worldview regardless of the cost.
Republicans then proceeded to take a bold initiative--healthcare for all Americans which every other democratic nation in the world already had--and turned it into an issue to further divide us and effectively sabotaging anything else President Obama could accomplish that would help the American people. In 2016, republicans gladly accepted help from a nation (Russia) that is our sworn enemy to once again take power, and Donald Trump promptly destroyed the United States standing in the world before so overwhelmingly botching a pandemic that over 650,000 Americans died on his watch, causing more deaths than any war America had ever fought. And most of it because he hoped that people dying in blue states would help lead to his re-election. It did not.
But never fear, unable to win Trump began lying about the outcome of an election he lost handily, and like the dutiful cult they are, republicans across America began to implement voter suppression laws (mostly aimed at people of color) to ensure future victory. And to put the icing on the cake, their supporters are refusing to wear masks and get vaccinated against a deadly mutation of the coronavirus to help protect their fellow Americans, and their leadership is actively sabotaging our economy.
So please tell me again how republicans believe in democracy or in any way want to be united with any American that isn't white or has a different political viewpoint. Johnson's words, like those coming out of any conservative's mouth these days, are utter horseshit.
Yes, Osama bin Laden is dead, but his fellow Muslims believe he's in heaven surrounded by thousands of virgins while republicans are doing their damnedest to turn America into an autocratic theocracy by combining the worst of the Taliban's and Vladimir Putin's fascist playbooks.
Osama bin Laden played republicans for the fools he knew they were, and the rest of America has suffered untold economic and health related harm because he so completely outplayed them.
