Do not underestimate our anger

 While our national media was once again busy botching a major story--the Eastman memo, a six step plan to overturn the 2020 election, which beyond a shadow of a doubt shows Donald Trump was guilty of sedition--I found it interesting that republicans assumed the Democrats would be feckless in their response to republicans overthrowing our government.

I have absolutely no doubt that the Chuck Schumers and Nancy Pelosis would be completely worthless in the face of it, but the rest of us would not.  I have been following politics since 1976 and I can guarantee you that I have never seen the level of anger from everyday Democrats that we're seeing now.  We have completely had it with Trump, his supporters, the rich white men who enable them, and a media whose utter incompetence in the face of republicans blowing up all of our norms to put a fascist dictator in charge of America has been staggering.

If Trump and the republican party regain control of the country by undermining our democracy, there will be nothing left worth saving.  Everything will be on the table.

And we will make damn certain that when we're done, the only thing republicans are governing is a fucking corpse.

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLI--Judy Collins: Send in the Clowns

 We're coming full circle this week, as I am featuring the woman who was the subject of the song for the first ever Friday Night Jukebox post I wrote, "Suite:  Judy Blue Eyes."  The series has come a long way since then--the posts are certainly longer at any rate--and hopefully will keep going for a long ways....

Judy Collins was born in Seattle, Washington in 1939, and was originally trained as a classical pianist, making her debut at the age of thirteen playing a piece by Mozart.  During her later teens, Collins became captivated by folk music and walked away from her classical training and began performing in clubs across the country at the age of 20.  She released her first album in 1961 and had her first hit single with Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" in 1968.  Collins has had an eclectic career, performing folk, rock, standards, and show tunes throughout it.  She has won a Grammy Award, and was also nominated for an Academy Award for a film she co-directed about her classical teacher.  She has released 28 studio albums (and has a new album scheduled for both this and next year), and 14 singles (with one top ten hit).  Unfortunately, Collins did not have the easiest of lives, suffering from polio, tuberculosis, bulimia, and alcoholism; she also lost her only child, a son, to suicide.  Collins has been active in liberal causes, and at the age of eight-two is still recording and performing in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Fun Fact:  "Send in the Clowns" was written by Broadway composer extraordinaire Stephen Sondheim for his musical A Little Night Music.  Sondheim won a Grammy Award for song of the year after Collins released her version;  she was nominated for a Grammy but did not win.

"Send in the Clowns" was originally released as a single from Collins' album, Judith in 1975.  The single hit #36 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album peaked at #17 on the albums chart.  The single was re-released in 1977 and climbed even higher, before stalling at #19.

"Send in the Clowns" tells the story of a woman who finally realizes she loves and wants to be with a man she had spurned when she was younger, only to find out he's now married.  Lyrically, Sondheim masterfully juxtaposes where the woman and the man are in their current relationship, and at the same time captures its comedic though disheartening end result.  Collins voice was blessed by angels when she was born, and between the beauty of her voice and her depiction of the protagonist lays bare the disappointment at the heart of the song.  Throw in an opening clarinet, and the understated instrumentation provided by a piano and some softly played strings, and you have one of the most lyrically and instrumentally beautiful songs ever written.  Spoiler alert:  in the musical the couple eventually ends up together....

 I try--but don't always necessarily succeed--to not be alarmist in my blog posts.  Oftentimes in the world of politics, our worst fears are not realized, and just as often, do not reach levels that are more than just worrisome.  This is not one of those times.

Take a good look at the picture above.  When you have people who show up at rallies for Donald Trump that are eerily reminiscent of Hitler's rallies in Nazi Germany, when you have people who refuse to believe the fact that Donald Trump lost the 2020 Presidential Election despite there being absolutely no evidence that he won, when you have people working in your government who are actively trying to destroy the country from within, and when you have people who refuse to look out for their fellow countryman in the wake of a pandemic, you have the same makings for a people to look upon anyone who is not like them as being nothing more than animals to be led to their slaughter.  Anyone who does not believe the current incarnation of the GOP is inching closer and closer to becoming America's version of Nazi Germany is kidding themselves.

If the republicans take the House and Senate in 2022, and Trump the White House in 2024, people of color, Jews, atheists, Liberals, and anyone who isn't a white Christian will be facing a future much like the one in the photo above.

And considering the inhuman sickness currently permeating the republican party, it will make Auschwitz look like a bicycle ride on a warm spring day.

Your vote, your choice

 In light of the Supreme Court's recent decision to uphold Texas' abortion ban, three recent polls have shown approval for America's highest court plummeting anywhere from fifteen to seventeen points, with all three polls showing more Americans now disapprove of the Court than approve.

Anyone who doesn't think this is an ill omen for republican chances to take back the Senate and the House in 2022, let alone the White House in 2024, is absolutely living in a fantasy world.

The nine Justices will begin hearing a Mississippi abortion case (Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization) on December 1, 2021, with their decision coming sometime in 2022 before the congressional mid-terms next November.  Given the right wing justices' acquiescence to the Texas ban, it's likely that Roe v. Wade's days are numbered.

And a blue wave in November of 2022 will officially be on the table.

Red states during the next pandemic

 Last year during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Showtime documentary series Vice featured an episode in which they talked to epidemiologists about the nature of pandemics.  I had three takeaways from the show:

1. The world was statistically lucky that it went a hundred years in between the 1918 Flu Pandemic and the COVID-19 pandemic without another serious pandemic, considering the growth in globalization.
2. As globalization will only grow, the world can expect 3-4 more pandemics between now and the year 2100.
3. As horrific as the death toll was for COVID-19, it is nothing compared to the death toll future pandemics could potentially bring--from tens of millions killed to hundreds of millions killed.

I note this because if another pandemic should hit in the near term (say the next ten years or so) it is hard to believe, given the actions of the republican party and governors such as Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott to ignore science and put their fellow Americans at risk in the name of pleasing their dying (in more ways than one) base of voters, that republicans will ever accept masks or shutdowns again.

In so doing, we could literally end up with not just semi-trucks full of dead bodies, but the dead of America lining its streets.

And it should be a wake up call to every sane American under the age of fifty that the republican party is well on its way to becoming a death cult and should be voted out of office at every turn.

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCL--Jessi Colter: I'm Not Lisa

 Once again, my memory failed me a bit this week.  I thought I was going to be featuring a minor hit from the seventies, but as I was doing my half-assed research I learned that it was a much bigger hit than I had remembered.  Not only that, though the artist was most known for being a country performer, I thought the song was more of a pop ballad...wrong again.  Go get 'em next week, Tiger!

Jessi Colter (birth name Miriam Johnson) was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1943, and after graduating from high school she began singing in local clubs.  Shortly thereafter she met and married rock and roll guitar legend Duane Eddy and began touring with him and writing songs before they divorced in 1968.  She soon met country music legend Waylon Jennings who helped her garner a recording contract with RCA as well as becoming her second husband.  Colter had several hits through the seventies and was one of the few women in the outlaw country movement, but her career slowed considerably in the eighties as she chose to help Jennings through his drug abuse and medical problems.  After his death in 2002, Colter turned back to performing and has remained active since.  For her career, Colter has released eleven studio albums (the latest in 2017), and twenty-six singles (with one top ten pop single, and two top ten country singles).  Colter is also the mother of country music star Shooter Jennings, who has had several hits of his own.

Fun Fact (or not):  Stevie Nicks originally wrote the song "Leather and Lace" for an album of duets from Jessi Colter and Waylon Jennings, but when she heard rumors of their impending divorce (they eventually stayed together), she decided to keep the song for herself and released it as a single with Don Henley.  The song ended up being a top ten hit, but was never recorded by Colter and Jennings.

"I'm Not Lisa" was first released as a single in 1975, and after having considerable success was added to her second album, the cleverly titled I'm Jessi Colter.  The song reached #4 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, and #1 on the Hot Country Singles chart.  The album was the most successful of her career, hitting #50 on the pop LP chart and #4 on the country LP chart.

"I'm Not Lisa" opens with Colter tapping individual piano keys almost as a lullaby, before telling her tale of a woman in love with a man who's still in love with a woman who left him (the lyrics leave it somewhat ambiguous as to whether it's death or another man) and trying to convince him that unlike Lisa, she's here to stay.  The music, the lyrics, and the instrumentation (there's some nice steel guitar about halfway through) are all sparse, which allows Colter's vocals--which are haunting--to carry the heartbreak of a woman who doesn't want her love to be forsaken for a ghost.  "I'm Not Lisa" is truly one of the better country ballads ever recorded, in no small part thanks to a wrenching vocal performance from Jessi Colter.

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCXLIX--Helen Reddy: I Am Woman

 As I've noted a time or two (or three or four) here on Friday Night Jukebox, the tunes I feature here each week are chosen years in advance of their posting, and once again this week we have one that just happened to oddly coincide with recent news events--that being the Supreme Court's decision earlier this month to allow the Texas ban on abortions to stand while I picked perhaps the greatest women's anthem ever performed some years ago to be this week's song.  Of course, as far off the deep end as the Supreme Court has gone during the Roberts' years, I probably shouldn't be surprised....

Helen Reddy was born into a show biz family in Melbourne, Australia in 1941.  After winning a talent contest in her native Australia in 1966 with a grand prize being the chance to record a single for Mercury Records, Reddy immigrated to America only to find out the grand prize wasn't so grand--it was only to be an audition for the chance, and they eventually decided they did not want her to record for them.  Reddy--despite being a single mom--decided to stay and pursue her dream anyway.  She got her chance in 1971 when she released her first single, which was a top twenty hit in Canada, and led to her second single which kickstarted her success.  Reddy had a number of hits, won a Grammy Award, and was inducted into Australia's music hall of fame  She retired in 2002 and after her retirement earned a degree in hypnotherapy.  In 2011 she returned to performing and continued through 2017.  For her career Reddy released eighteen studio albums (with six hitting the top twenty), and 31 singles (with three hitting #1 and another three reaching the top ten).  Ms. Reddy was diagnosed with dementia in 2015, but still participated in the 2017 Women's March.  Sadly, she passed away last year at the age of seventy-eight.

"I Am Woman" was originally released on Reddy's debut album, I Don't Know How to Love Him in 1971.  It was later re-recorded with an additional verse and chorus and became a hit single on Reddy's third album, I Am Woman.  The second version reached #1 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, and its album hit #14 on the Billboard 200.

I don't think it can be overstated what an important cultural reference point "I Am Woman" was to a still relatively nascent women's movement here in America.  As a man who has never suffered the discrimination that women have in America's history, I am loathe to imagine what this song meant to the women of the time (and the women of today), but I hope it spoke to the empowerment they were (and are) seeking.  From a strictly musical standpoint, the song is incredibly catchy and Reddy's vocals capture the strength, defiance, and joy that the song's lyrics demonstrate.  In the end, what stands out most for me is not only did Reddy create an anthem (which isn't often done), but she created one that appeals to half the world's population--and spoke to their common history and their hope for the actualization of their fight to be treated as equals.
