Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXXXI--Aerosmith: Dream On

It may be a week late, but at least it's on a Friday Saturday....

Not So Great Moments in Dorkville:  Back in the day, every now and again our parents would go out for the evening, and when they did we'd have the whole house to ourselves.  So me, my brother, and a friend of my brother's would listen to 45's and pretend we were a band and play our air instruments as we listened  (I told you it was Dorkville...).  Needless to say, this week's tune was one of the better numbers in our repertoire....

A brief history of Aerosmith:  Band forms, has local success, becomes national success, gets fucked up on drugs and loses a couple of members, gets straight and all members come back, against all odds has massive comeback, gets old together and keeps playing rock and roll.  And while they've had their differences during the years, since they started in 1970 all five of the original members are still in the band--doesn't happen often in rock and roll.  Through the years the band has accumulated five
Grammys and sold over 150 million records.  They were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and in 2013 lead singer Steven Tyler and lead guitarist Joe Perry were elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame.  For their career, Aerosmith has released fifteen studio albums, with two hitting #1, and five others peaking in the top ten.  They've also released seventy-two singles, with seven of those reaching the top ten.  The band has been plagued with numerous health issues in their later years, but they did on embark on a farewell tour last September.

"Dream On" was the first single Aerosmith ever released, from their ever so cleverly named debut album, AerosmithThe single would reach #59 (with a bullet!), though the album would not chart.  After the success of their more playfully named 1975 album, Toys in the Attic, "Dream On" was re-released and would hit #6 (again with a bullet!), and the album would hit #21.

For a band that--at least in its early days--built a reputation as badass hard rockers, "Dream On" is a surprisingly optimistic exhortation to keep on dreaming until your dreams come true.  Written by Tyler, the song opens with some eastern influenced guitar from Joe Perry before segueing into Tyler's musing vocals, and his call to sing with him (which, for whatever odd reason, I love its spirit of brotherhood).   The song is very anthemic--I could imagine back in the day it was probably quite the showstopper for their live shows.  Although I'd never call myself a big Aerosmith follower, I've heard enough of their catalog to say that while they've had a number of good songs, I don't think they've ever had one that was better than this one.  And it closes with a gong!  The aspirations of youth come true....

Lyric Sheet:  "I know nobody knows/Where it comes and where it goes/I know it's everybody's sin/You got to lose to know how to win..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXXX--Graham Parker: Temporary Beauty

Better late than never, or so they say....

This week's tune came along at a time when I was still early in my musical journey, and it was the first single after this week's artist had released an album that was a bit of a disappointment after the classic album he'd released before that.  I was still naive enough to believe that critical success would one day lead to glory...but for Graham Parker it never really did.  No matter--he's provided me (and many others, I'm sure) with plenty of glorious listening....

I wrote about Graham Parker way back in Volume XXVI (that was 454 posts ago!), and while I wasn't writing bio paragraphs per se back then, I wrote enough of one for Parker to not write another.  I would like to note that Parker released an album just last year (his twenty-fifth), and much like Squeeze that I wrote about a few posts back, feel like it's a damn shame that he hasn't been elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  A great--and underrated in my humble opinion--talent.

"Temporary Beauty" was the first single from an album that was not another grey area, Another Grey Area.    The single did not chart in America but hit #50 on the U.K. Singles Chart.  The album reached #42 in his native U.K., and #50 here in the United States.

Fun Fact:  This week's album was the last of Parker's studio albums to chart in the U.K., but his next five would chart in America.  A bit odd as smaller British acts (as in not the Beatles or the Stones) tend to be bigger in their homeland for longer periods than they are here.

"Temporary Beauty" is one of my favorite songs by Graham Parker, and it was one of those songs that I knew the first time I heard it that it would be a favorite for years to come.  Very few people write put down songs better than Parker, though I think the lyrics in the chorus for this one takes a little of the edge off and shows Parker in a more empathetic light.  Parker juxtaposes the catty commentary of the stanzas with a catchy chorus that is to die for.  As always, his vocals carry the day, and like Mick Jagger, he is able to convey so much (especially anger and disgust) through them.  There's nothing temporary about this one...and it's a beauty.

Lyric Sheet:  "The world is full of little people like you/They have to read a book to learn what to do/They hang around in second hand stores for clothes/And every kind of pressure steps on their toes..."

Enjoy:

Don't ever let me go...

RIP, Eric Carmen, 1949-2024

Eric Carmen, who had a number of hits both with his original band and solo, passed away earlier this week, and while I'd be exaggerating if I said that I was a huge fan of his, I was saddened by his death, especially since it seemed to go a little under the radar (nobody even wrote a post on Daily Kos, and someone always writes a death post for a musician who passes).  Such is the fickle nature of life, I suppose.

Still, it's saying something that his greatest musical accomplishment, the song "Go All the Way" which was released in 1972 when he was in the Raspberries (I wrote about it in Vol. CDLIX last October), is a song that more than fifty years later is still being raved about (and not just by music dorks like me).  I'd think that's a legacy that any musician would cherish, and I hope that Mr. Carmen did and had some appreciation for how much many millions of us loved the song.

As a soundtrack for his journey to Rock and Roll Heaven, I'd like to feature another song of his that I liked, 1977's "She Did It."  It's a nice pop ditty from my formative musical years (lyrics here for my three readers that care...).  Enjoy, and rest in rock and roll peace, Eric Carmen:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXXIX--Simon and Garfunkel: America

Thank God this isn't a job--with this many tardies I'd be fired by now....

Surprisingly enough, considering I'm 479 posts into Friday Night Jukebox, this is the first time I've written about Simon and Garfunkel--though I did do a post about a solo Paul Simon effort.  Much like this week's tune, the earlier Simon tune was about, of all things on an American political blog, America.  And I suppose there's a certain symmetry to twice posting an artist's musings on the American experience....

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel met in grade school in Queens, New York City, in 1953, and by 1956 they were performing as Tom and Jerry (and had a minor hit in 1957).  They would break up and reunite several times before realizing folk music was breaking big in 1963 and reformed as Simon and Garfunkel.  Their first album was a dud and they broke up again (it would be a theme); a couple of years after "The Sound of Silence" from that debut album was remixed and became a #1 hit.  They regrouped, and over the course of the next five years won seven Grammys and eventually sold over one hundred million records.  They broke up in 1970 and over the next fifty some odd years would record together occasionally and tour together often until 2009 when their differences became too great to continue.  In the end, they were elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and were listed at #40 on Rolling Stone's 2010 list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time."  Not too bad for a band that released five--five, that's it--studio albums in their career.

"America" originally appeared on their fourth album, 1968's BookendsThe song was not released as a single until 1972, and then as a promo for their Greatest Hits album.  It peaked at #97 (with a bullet! though it wasn't much of one considering its chart peak...).  The album was one of two #1 hit LPs the duo enjoyed during their career.

Fun Fact #1:  The song is more or less autobiographical, as it chronicles a five-day bus trip Simon took with then girlfriend Kathy Chitty.

Fun Fact #2:  The song is also one of the few hit rock songs to not have lyrics that rhyme.

Widely considered one of Paul Simon's best lyrical efforts and Simon and Garfunkel's better songs, "America" is the story of not so carefree young lovers traversing across America in a not so carefree time.  Simon's lyrics captures both the exuberance and angst of youth...and the exuberance and angst of America.  Simon's vocals are melancholy yet hopeful, and Garfunkel's harmonies conjure the beauty that can be the American experience.  Though Simon and Garfunkel had plenty of magical moments in their song catalog, there's an air of greatness in this one that seems to grow with each successive listen.  A masterpiece of folk rock.

Lyric Sheet:  "Kathy, I said, as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh/Michigan seems like a dream to me now/It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw/I've gone to look for America..."

Enjoy:
