Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLXI--Sister Hazel: All for You

The band performing this week's tune is from Gainesville, Florida, also the home of emaycee fave Tom Petty.  Oh, the things you'll learn on Friday Night Jukebox!

Sister Hazel formed in 1993, and in something of a surprise for a rock band, all five original members are still performing together twenty-eight years down the road.  The band released its latest studio album just last year, and has had some success through the years with songs on movie and TV soundtracks, as well as performing covers for Fleetwood Mac and Big Star tribute albums.  For their career, Sister Hazel has released ten studio albums, and while none have hit the top of the charts, eight of them have charted on the Billboard 200.  The band has also released four EPs, with an elemental theme:  the discs were named Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water.  Sister Hazel also has a non-profit called Lyrics for Life, which helps pediatric cancer.

Fun Fact:  Sister Hazel is named for Sister Hazel Williams, a missionary who ran a homeless shelter in Gainesville.  Sadly, Sister Hazel (the missionary, not the band) passed away in 2016 at the ripe old age of 91.

"All for You" was originally released on their debut album, entitled appropriately enough, Sister Hazel, in 1994.  The song was re-recorded for their second album, ...Somewhere More Familiar, and it is that version that became the band's biggest hit (and only one of two singles that charted), peaking at #12 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100.  The album hit #47, but is only the second highest charting of their studio albums.

Regular readers (both of you) will take a listen to "All for You" and hear a touch of acoustic guitar, a bit of blue-eyed soul, and a catchier than all hell chorus and think, "Yup, this has got emaycee fave written all over it."  Throw in that it's a silky smooth pop ditty about both the mystery and the magic that is being in love, a fine vocal performance, and some fabulous harmonies, and it's another boulder making Pop Music Mountain stretch ever higher into the sky.

Lyric Sheet:  "It's hard to say what it is I see in you/Wonder if I'll always be with you/But words can't say and I can't do/Enough to prove it's all for you..."

Enjoy:

Republican = Racist

Peace,
emaycee
