| Better red than republican! |
Not satisfied that "Socialist" was enough of a smear for us liberals, republicans have regurgitated "Communist" from the 1950's to impugn our character and our motives. Apparently, a phrase from this century would have been a bit too much for their old white base, and they've just decided to go with the tried and the true in their casting of aspersions.
Unfortunately for them, since the fall of the Soviet Union (and let's not forget Trump's capitulation to Vladimir Putin) being a communist carries about as much menace these days as a week old kitten.
In the future, perhaps they can try "rapscallion" or "scalawag"--their base isn't getting any younger and either would surely prove to be considerably more threatening than a term from when I Love Lucy was in its heyday.
