Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLX--Sly and the Family Stone: Everyday People

A song from the sixties calling for loving and understanding each other at a time when our differences have never been greater.  Sadly, it's become far too fashionable to punch a hippie; it may have been an imperfect time but it sure fought a lot harder for a perfect world than is done today, often with songs just like this week's featured tune....

Sly and the Family Stone were formed in my birth home of San Francisco in 1966 by Sly Stone (birth name, Sylvester Stewart) and actually did feature his family, what with his brother and sister being in the band as well as other musicians.  The band is famed for being the first American music group to feature not only white and black musicians, but also men and women musicians, as well.  Sly and the Family Stone is considered one of the most influential bands in American music history, playing a large role in the funk, soul, rock, and psychedelic styles.  Three of their albums made Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all-time, and the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.  As has been known to happen, rampant drug use and sometimes violent confrontations between band members hastened the demise of the band, and by 1987 they were done.  For their career, the band released eleven studio albums (with one #1), and 22 singles, of which three hit the top of the charts.  The band has "reunited" twice--once at their induction ceremony (long enough for Sly to say a few words and then disappear) and at a Grammy tribute (long enough for Sly to sing a verse and then disappear).  Sadly, Sly Stone at last glance was living in a van getting by with the help of neighbors and had completely turned his back on the music industry.

"Everyday People" was originally released as a single in 1968, and later added to their seminal 1969 album, Stand!  The single was the first of Sly and the Family Stone's to hit #1 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album was their first to become a hit, eventually reaching #13 on the Billboard 200.

Fun Fact:  This week's tune is credited with popularizing the phrase "Different strokes for different folks."  And another addition to the extremely long list of things I never would have guessed....

"Everyday People" opens with some jaunty piano joined by a pulsating bass and a little snappy drumming, and only gets better from there.  Sly Stone sings some peace and love lyrics with a joyful certainty, and sister Rose breaks in with sing song stanzas that give the song a gritty innocence.  You can literally imagine grade school children singing this one at an assembly (it'd be one cool ass assembly).  Rolling Stone ranked it #145 on their list of the 500 greatest songs of all-time, and it's easy to see why:  it's two minutes and forty-seven seconds of some of the funkiest hope and dreams you'll ever hear.

Lyric Sheet:  "And so on and so on/And scooby dooby dooby/Oh sha sha/We got to live together..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLIX--? and the Mysterians: 96 Tears

This week's tune is from a band that some consider to be the first punk rock group.  That's a hell of a historical footnote for a band that, for the most part, had only one hit.  But if you're going to have just one memorable tune, might as well make the most of it.

? and the Mysterians were formed in my current home state of Michigan (specifically Bay City and Saginaw) in 1962 by the children of migrant farm workers as a trio, playing dates throughout their adopted home.  Shortly thereafter, Rudy Martinez (stage name:  Question Mark) would join the band, as well as keyboardist Frank Rodriguez, and the band would land its first record deal in 1966.  That same year they released their signature tune, which would eventually sell over a million copies.  The band would stay together through 1969, having four more charting hit singles.  For their career, ? and the Mysterians released four albums, but only their first reached the Billboard LP chart.  The band has reunited, reformed in new incarnations, and done a few collaborations since their heyday, and is still performing occasionally to this day.

Fun Fact:  Question Mark is something of a character, at one point in time telling interviewers that his soul originated on Mars and that he walked the earth with the dinosaurs.  At this time, rock journalists have yet to refute either claim....

"96 Tears" was released as a single in 1966, and later added to their debut album. the oh so originally titled 96 TearsThe song would hit #1 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, and was ranked #213 on Rolling Stone's list of the five hundred greatest songs of all time.  The album peaked at #66.

While I am sure there are nuances to "96 Tears" that a layman such as myself doesn't see, what strikes me most is how simple the song is:  for the most part it's some of the catchiest organ playing in the history of music, simple repeated lyrics, and an incredible vocal performance by Question Mark wherein he delivers the song with bravado bordering on anger but never lets the anger overwhelm the singer's conviction that he'll have payback for his broken heart.  Question Mark sings in short bursts and with a number of vocal inflections that add just the right amount of playfulness.  I've noted a time or two here just how special it is when a group of musicians get together and create a once in a lifetime classic, and "96 Tears" is another case where a band stood on the shoulders of giants.

Lyric Sheet:  "You're way on top now since you left me/You're always laughing way down at me/But watch out now, I'm gonna get there..."

Enjoy:

The lack of originality is telling

Better red than republican!

Not satisfied that "Socialist" was enough of a smear for us liberals, republicans have regurgitated "Communist" from the 1950's to impugn our character and our motives.  Apparently, a phrase from this century would have been a bit too much for their old white base, and they've just decided to go with the tried and the true in their casting of aspersions.

Unfortunately for them, since the fall of the Soviet Union (and let's not forget Trump's capitulation to Vladimir Putin) being a communist carries about as much menace these days as a week old kitten.

In the future, perhaps they can try "rapscallion" or "scalawag"--their base isn't getting any younger and either would surely prove to be considerably more threatening than a term from when I Love Lucy was in its heyday.

It's always a two way street

Two can play that game...

It never ceases to amaze me how often those on the right fail to perceive that what's good for the goose is good for the gander as well.  Case in point:  the glee being shown by G.I. Joe wannabes everywhere, in light of the Kyle Rittenhouse being found not guilty of murdering two protesters and wounding one, who believe it is now open season on protesting black folks and libtards everywhere.

They do not seem to realize that this also means that any well-meaning left winger who in a fit of panic decides that citizens storming the Capitol building or any group of people protesting mask mandates at their state capitol by carrying guns the size of sycamore trees (which still won't make up for their small penises) are a threat to their well-being can open fire on any such threatening characters, too.

The looks on their faces when the first liberal uses the "Rittenhouse Defense" will be priceless.

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CCCLVIII--Radiohead: Optimistic

Between an annoying cold and starting a new job, I'm a wee bit behind on the old Friday Night Jukebox, so without further ado....

As the Wikipedia entry for both this week's artist and this week's album are just slightly shorter than Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace (truly an exaggeration), my half-assed research for this post is really half-assed with me reading the introduction to both and that's about it.  Radiohead formed in 1985 in Oxfordshire in the U.K., starting out as your basic alternative band and having a measure of success in the early nineties.  The band became critical darlings in the late nineties with a series of albums that pushed the limits lyrically and musically of what a pop band can do.  They experimented with the way albums were released, and released one album online whereby fans could pay what they felt the album was worth (somewhat surprisingly, it was a commercial success).  Through the years Radiohead has won six Grammy Awards, sold over 30 million records, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.  For their career, Radiohead has released nine studio LPs, of which six have reached #1 in their native U.K. and two have hit the top here in the United States.  For whatever reason, aside from this week's tune the band's seminal albums have never struck a chord with me (had I but world enough and time, they may have), but I have a great deal of respect for what they have tried to accomplish both musically and economically.

Fun Fact:  In a real rarity in the music business, the original incarnation of Radiohead is still intact, thirty-six years since they first began.  While several have done solo albums and side projects, the five remain committed to continuing to record and tour together.

"Optimistic" was released on their album Kid A in 2000, though it was not released as a single (oddly enough, because my introduction to it was a video on MTV).  The album eventually reached #1 in both the U.K. and the U.S.

It's easy at first listen to be drawn to "Optimistic" by the tribal drumming, but over time the amalgamation of the rhythmic drumming, the Gregorian chant like intro, the pop vocals, and some good old-fashioned electric guitar sears its way into your consciousness and stays with you for a lifetime.  The lyrics are disjointed noise (though frontman Thom Yorke has said the chorus was inspired by his partner's encouragement when Yorke felt the band was not reaching its potential as she told him that trying the best he could was good enough), but it's no matter:  somehow between the music and Yorke's vocals the song's gist comes across.  This one definitely isn't for everyone, but if you occasionally want to take a walk on the avant-garde side of pop music "Optimistic" is an excellent stroll down experimental lane.  A great piece of work by a band pushing the outer limits of their talents.

Lyric Sheet:  "I'd really like to help you man/I'd really like to help you man/Nervous messed up marionette/Floating around on a prison ship..."
