Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXCIX--The Everly Brothers: Devoted to You

You can tell I'm on vacation this week--actually on time....

Unlike the last two weeks, I most certainly remember where I first heard this week's tune.  It was from a wonderful cover version by James Taylor and Carly Simon (at the time, they were rock and roll's First Couple--alas, the marriage did not last).  For whatever reason, it would be years before I heard the original (probably about the time the internet became widely available), but as with so many other songs, the original is the best....

It would be damn near impossible to understate The Everly Brothers contribution to rock and roll. From their plethora of wondrous singles to their unparalleled harmonies, from their groundbreaking guitar riffs to their influence on country rock, The Everly Brothers are truly one of the greatest music artists of all time (they were in the inaugural Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class in 1986).  The brothers (Don and Phil for the three of you wondering) began performing in Iowa with their parents in the mid-forties before starting their career in earnest in 1956.  They'd have their first hit the next year and had numerous more until both joined the Marines in 1961.  Being out of the spotlight and drug problems reduced their success here in America, though they'd continue to have a few more hits in Canada and the U.K through the late sixties.  Don and Phil had a falling out in 1973 and didn't perform together again until 1983.  They'd perform until 2005 when another personality clash finished them for good.  For their career, The Everly Brothers released twenty-one albums (with three reaching the top ten), two live albums, twenty-nine compilations, and seventy-five singles (with thirteen hitting the top ten, three of which went all the way to #1).  Sadly, Phil passed away in 2014, and Don in 2021; even worse, the brothers did not reconcile before Phil's death.

Fun Fact:  In addition to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the brothers were also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame, Rockabilly Hall of Fame, and Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  They also have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Life Achievement Grammy, were rated #33 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest artists of all time and were voted the greatest duo of all time in their list of the twenty greatest duos.

"Devoted to You" was released as the flip side to "Bird Dog" but eventually became a hit on its own, peaking at #10 (most assuredly with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100.  It was later added to their compilation The Everly Brothers' Best, which near as I can tell, somehow didn't hit the charts.

I'm not sure Shakespeare himself could do justice to "Devoted to You"--the harmonies are exquisite, the music itself is sweeter than the nectar of the Gods, and the pledging of your one true love is an oath as old as the very first love poem.  A lovely song, a lovely sentiment, and a lovely addition to the pantheon of songs here at Friday Night Jukebox.

Lyric Sheet:  "I'll be yours through endless time/I'll adore your charms sublime/Guess by now you know that I'm/Devoted to you..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXCVIII--Donovan: Sunshine Superman

At least I'm keeping it to three or four four or five days late and not a week....

Much like last week's tune, this week's featured song brings no recollection of when I first became aware of it or heard it.  Due to its unique sound, it's possible I could have heard it on a top forty station or an AOR station--but with its release date of 1966, the one thing I can guarantee you is that I wasn't on the Donovan bandwagon at age seven....

Donovan Phillips Leitch (hereafter Donovan) was born in Scotland in 1946.  He began playing guitar at the age of fourteen, and by the time he was nineteen he'd had a top five hit in his native U.K.  After another year he had a #1 hit single in America, and his success would continue into the early seventies before petering out.  Donovan is considered one of the progenitors of psychedelic rock, and in 2012 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  For his career, he has released twenty-nine studio albums, eight live albums, sixty-two (!) compilations, and thirty-three singles.  Donovan released his latest album in 2022 and is taking this year off to prepare for a sixtieth anniversary tour next year.  Donovan dabbled in acting in his heyday, appearing in three films, and his two oldest children, Donovan Leitch and Ione Skye are both actors.

"Sunshine Superman" was originally released as a single before being added to a cash grab album, the not so originally named Sunshine SupermanThe single would become the highest charting of his career in both the U.S. (#1--with a bullet!) and the U.K. (#2).  The album would be his highest charting album in America, peaking at #11.

Fun Fact:  Two of the studio musicians on "Sunshine Superman' were bassist John Paul Jones and guitarist Jimmy Page, who went on to form a somewhat successful band you may have heard of:  Led Zeppelin.

You can tell the special quality of a song when you listen to it, and think, "That's from the sixties"...and yet it still sounds as fresh as if it had been released this year.  It's equal parts Donovan's vocals (love the way he adds an extra syllable here and there throughout the song--like "a-thinkin'"), Page's otherworldly guitar, and the overarching sparseness of the music.  Donovan was twenty when "Sunshine Superman" was released, and his musical and lyrical intuition shows an acumen well beyond his years.  As a side note:  Donovan wrote the song for a woman he was attracted to, who initially did not share his interest in pursuing a relationship.  They had a chance meeting in the early seventies, were married shortly thereafter, and are still together to this day.  True love wins in the end....

Lyric Sheet:  "I'll pick up your hand and slowly/Blow your little mind/'Cause I made my mind up/You're going to be mine..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXCVII--The Chi-Lites: Have You Seen Her

 Shitski, really late once again....

I have absolutely no recognition of when I began hearing this week's tune, so I'll just chalk it up to being someone who came of age musically in the seventies.  And, oh, what an era that was...and, oh, what a song our featured song this week is....

The Chi-Lites formed in Chicago (hence the "chi" in their name) in 1959, which was the same year I was born--coincidence?  Most certainly.  They started out as a six-member band, but by their heyday in the seventies they were a four-piece outfit.  The Chi-Lites have had so many iterations that I could have used this entire bio just to name half the people that at one time or another were in the band.  They have been inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the R & B Music Hall of Fame.  For their career, they released eighteen studio albums (with one top five LP), and sixty-four singles (with two top three singles).  Sadly, only one of the original Chi-Lites is still alive, but to end on a positive note, Marshall Thompson is keeping their music going some sixty-five years down the road.

Fun Fact:  I've spent years pronouncing the band's name with a hard "ch" (as in chair), only to find out as I was doing my half-assed research that the "Chi" is actually pronounced as in the word "shy."  You learn something new every day, friends.

"Have You Seen Her" was the fourth single released from their rather omnipotently (and stunningly cool, as well) entitled album (For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People.  The single reached number three (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album would peak at #12.

There has never been a decade like the 1970's for what was once called soul music--just off the top of my head (in addition to this week's band), I can think of Marvin Gaye, Al Green, the Spinners, the O'Jays, War, and Stevie Wonder (and I'm certainly missing countless more), all of whom created a legacy that will last generations.  "Have You Seen Her" is an incredible addition to that legacy--from its spoken opening (Eugene Record's intro is truly an Oscar worthy performance) to the band's heavenly harmonies to Record's falsetto solo mixed in the chorus.  It's also an excellent addition to the pantheon of songs dealing with a broken heart, though with the added bonus of being from a viewpoint of a guy who thought he "had her in the palm of [his] hand."  One of the surest ways I know to how much I love a song is how much I smile while I'm playing it during my weekly half-assed research and this week my smile was absolutely plastered to my face.  A joy, a triumph--one of those songs that make all the time you devoted in your life to music well worth it.

Lyric Sheet:  "Well, I know I can't hide from a memory/Though day after day I've tried/I keep sayin' she'll be back/But today again I lied..."

Enjoy:
