Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXC--Pete Droge: Going Whichever Way the Wind Blows

 It's Friday, I'm...on time?

My introduction to this week's tune came from a commercial for Toyota's Sequoia, which probably drops my coolness quotient another notch or two.  Ah, well--old enough now that it doesn't much matter....

I wrote about Pete Droge in Vol. CDXVIII, and as there's nothing new in his career, I'll leave his bio at that write-up.  I would like to note, though, that I am somewhat surprised to be featuring a second song by an artist whose career could be called middling at best, though a middling career as a musician beats most other professions by quite a bit.  I'd also like to pass along that because of that bio I took a chance and gave a listen to his debut album (that'd been sitting in my CD collection gathering dust since whenever I grabbed the promo copy that was sent my way in my Camelot Music days), Necktie Second, and thoroughly enjoyed it, listening to it for a good couple of months.  Half-assed research pays off!

Fun Fact:  One thing I did learn this time in my half-assed research was that Droge's career got a huge boost from his friendship with Mike McCready, the lead guitarist for a little band you might have heard of:  Pearl Jam.  Friends in high places and all that....

"Going Whichever Way the Wind Blows" appeared on Droge's fifth solo album, the rather swimmingly entitled Under the WavesNear as I can tell from the rather sparse references I found, the song was not released as a single and the album, which was released on Droge's own label, did not chart.  And if you read the album review under the AllMusic reference above, you'd probably not listen to Droge at all....

While Droge is often compared to either Tom Petty or Neil Young (kind of hear Petty, you got me on Young), I thought this week's tune had more of a Simon and Garfunkel vibe to it.  It's definitely a whimsical tune, the major theme being to not let life get in the way and just enjoy the ride (plenty of imagery related to driving a car, too).  Truth be told, I'm pretty much at that point in my life so the song may have a bit more significance (if any song can have significance to the real world) to me than others.  Droge's vocals capture the carefree simplicity of the lyrics, both of which are buffered by some fine acoustic guitar (can't ever get enough of acoustic guitars).  "Going Whichever Way the Wind Blows" is a short and sweet folk tune, performed by a troubadour, signifying that contentment is yours for the taking....

Lyric Sheet:  "Going whichever way the wind blows/Staring through the windshield/Seeing the other side/Let it go, it will get easier/Let it go, just enjoy the ride..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXXXIX: David Lindley: Mercury Blues

The "late" show....

Very early in my career with Camelot Music, I discovered that one of the great things about running a music store is that you have access to album after album after album, and as long as it was new(ish), bosses didn't much care what you opened to play in your store.  Read a good review in Rolling Stone?  Let's hear it!  See an interesting album cover?  Let's hear it!  Curious about an artist or album with good word of mouth?  Let's hear it!  From Lou Reed's The Blue Mask to the Jam's Sound Affects, from Hoodoo Gurus' Mars Needs Guitars! to the BoDeansLove & Hope & Sex & Dreams (among many others), the number of albums I had a chance to hear and eventually love was multiplied countless times by the access I had.  Much like this week's artist, who was one of the very first to have an album I'd never have heard if I'd chosen to be a shoe salesman instead.  And the best part?  Didn't cost me a dime....

David Lindley was born in San Marino, California in 1944, and began playing the violin at age three.  By his early teens he had learned the ukulele, and by his late teens the banjo.  In 1966 he co-founded the band Kaleidoscope, which released four albums until 1970.  After the band's demise, Lindley went on to become one of the great session musicians (mostly as a guitarist), as well as touring band musician, of all-time.  He was a master of virtually any instrument that had strings and was a collector of all stringed instruments as well.  Lindley was in Jackson Browne's band for many years, and also played with Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt, Bruce Springsteen, Ry Cooder,Warren Zevon, and a holy host of others.  Lindley also performed solo, releasing seventeen albums and one soundtrack over the course of his career.  Sadly, Lindley passed away in 2023 from the effects of Long COVID.

Fun Fact:  I didn't know this until he died (and how I didn't know considering how many times I listened to the album over the course of my life will forever be a mystery), but the stunning falsetto in Jackson Browne's version of the classic "Stay," which closes his brilliant album Running on Emptywas performed by none other than David Lindley.

"Mercury Blues" appeared on Lindley's debut solo album, the intriguingly named El Rayo-X (also the name of his backing band) in 1981.  The single did not reach the pop chart, but the album peaked at #83 on the Billboard 200.

"Mercury Blues" was originally written and released in 1948, and since that time has been covered by numerous artists (as well as showing up in a Ford commercial or two).  Lindley really juices his version, both vocally and instrumentally, with the fervor that captures the spirit of a bitchin' car.  His vocals are distinctive, and the two guitar solos are technically and musically beyond most mere mortals.  Really love the power of the drums, too, which roar like a souped up engine.  I can only imagine how divine it would be to listen to this week's tune as I was cruising up and down the road....

Lyric Sheet:  "If I had money, I tell you what I'd do/I'd go downtown and buy a Mercury or two/I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXXXVIII--The Refreshments: Banditos

At least this one's only six days late....

I was only eleven when the sixties ended, but through the years I have read/seen/heard that musically it was a veritable cornucopia of styles with hundreds of bands releasing singles that became classics, or, at the very least, inspired many an oldies tour many years later.  While I wouldn't compare the two, in many ways the nineties were a lot the same.  Sure, there were greats like Nirvana and Pearl Jam (among others) having their breakthroughs, but there were plenty of smaller artists that had their moment in the sun, sometimes just as a one-hit wonder--much like this week's featured band and its tune....

The Refreshments, like many bands before them, formed out of the remnants of two other bands, though in Tempe, Arizona in 1992.  They originally opened for other local bands, but within a year found themselves packing small venues.  They were accepted into South by Southwest where their solid performance morphed into a record deal with Mercury.  They released their first LP in 1996 and had a minor hit.  They recorded a follow-up, but a combination of changes at the label and poor promotional support of their second album led to weak sales and the band being dropped from the label.  That would spell the end of band, though they have reunited briefly in 2010, 2013, and 2016.  For their career, the Refreshments released two albums, one EP, and five singles.  Lead singer and guitarist Roger Clyne formed Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers after the band's demise, and is still performing under that moniker, including playing a number of the Refreshments hits when in concert.

Fun Fact #1:  Not only did the Refreshments write and perform the theme song for the television show King of the Hill, but they have also penned the theme song for their local baseball team, the (boo!) Arizona Diamondbacks.

"Banditos" was the first single from their debut album, the alliteratively named Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big and Buzzy.  While doing my half-assed research, I learned that the single did reach the Billboard Hot 100, but was given no number. I was also unable to find a chart position for the album.  Not a good week for Wikipedia entries....

Fun Fact #2.  The title of this week's album is a nod to the Who's compilation album Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy.  Maybe Wikipedia wasn't so bad after all....

Roger Clyne has said that the inspiration for "Banditos" came from being a poor college student, and playfully dreaming of knocking off a convenience store for money and heading for Mexico.  He actually wrote the song while hanging out with friends, and the reference to Jean-Luc Picard came from them all being Star Trek fans.  As you might suppose, this one is just fun.  That being said, Clyne's vocals are just this side of wonderful, with a mischievous exuberance that plays well with the song's story line (for whatever odd reason I also love the way he says "uh-huh" at the end of several stanzas--just a nice touch of smart ass).  There's a couple of nice instrumental breaks, and Clyne's lyrics capture the criminal daydream element with a B-movie embellishment that's worth a smile or two (also love the line "And everybody knows that the world is full of stupid people" in the chorus, but that may just be a reaction to the dumbasses in MAGA).  Every now and again, a good pop song is just a good pop song--and "Banditos" is just a good pop song.

Lyric Sheet:  "Well, give your I.D. card to the border guard/Now your alias says you're Captain Jean-Luc Picard/Of the United Federation of Planets/"Cause he won't speak English anyway..."

Enjoy:
