Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXXII--R.E.M.--(Don't Go Back to) Rockville

One of these days I'll get another one on time....

This week's tune is the one that made me an R.E.M. fan.  While the rest of the album would eventually become songs that I loved, this week's tune was the one that made me keep coming back and giving more listens until I had become infatuated with the entire album.  And just to tell you how old I am, it was on an actual LP that I first listened to R.E.M.....

I wrote about R.E.M. in Jukebox Vol. CXXXII, and as the band is still not performing together, and showing no signs of ever doing so again, that brief bio is pretty much going to cover everything I'd want to note about the band.

"(Don't Go Back to) Rockville" was the second single from R.E.M.'s first LP, the rather prophetically named ReckoningThe single did not chart, while the album reached #27 on the Billboard 200 (which kind of surprised me as I seem to remember my store selling about three copies--which may be great in Decatur, Illinois for a quirky band from Athens, GA).

Fun Fact:  "(Don't Go Back to) Rockville" was written about a love interest of bassist Mike Mills, Ingrid Schorr, while the two of them were in college.  Ms. Schorr would eventually become a journalist and wrote a somewhat humorous piece about her fifteen minutes of rock and roll fame--and the inaccuracies in the song as well as how those inaccuracies only grew through the years as R.E.M.'s fame grew as well.

"(Don't Go Back to) Rockville" is not the standard fare for an R.E.M. song, as it is more or less a country and western song (the song was originally performed in a punk style, but while recording it the band made it country in a joke aimed at its manager).  The song is a plea from Mike Mills to his then girlfriend to not go back home to Maryland and stay in Athens with him (even with the inaccuracies that part of the song is more or less true).  Michael Stipe's vocals are impassioned (though when the band performed it live Mills sang lead), the band sounds like a country and western bar band on a Friday Night at the Dew Drop Inn (fully intended as a compliment), and together they made a hell of a song. In the end, though, what the song highlights is R.E.M.'s versatility, which in turns shows its greatness as it stretched the limits of its talents and made a musical moment of wonder.

Lyric Sheet:  "At night I drink myself to sleep/And pretend that I don't care that you're not here with me/"Cause it's so much easier to handle/All my problems if I'm too far out to sea..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXXI--Bruce Springsteen: Blinded by the Light

Only six days late for this one.  Getting better!

In the fall of 1975, I was a lonely teenager who had begun to discover the joys of politics, and I'd go to my high school's library every day at lunch and pore over Time and Newsweek to keep up with the latest political stories.  In October of that year, this musician that I'd never heard of made the cover of both in the same week.  I rushed right out and bought his new album, Born to Runand after a couple of listens...decided I didn't really like it all that much.  Fortunately for me, I am a persevering sort and gave it a few more listens and it eventually became my favorite album of all-time.  To make a too long story shorter, after realizing Born to Run was quite the album, I began to explore his earlier works, and was lucky enough to hit upon the gem that was his debut, whose first song is this week's featured tune....

Amazingly enough, I've only written about Bruce Springsteen, probably my favorite artist (with The Who a close second), twice for Friday Night Jukebox.  I wrote about the aforementioned album (it was my first yearly album post) in Vol. LXXV, and "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" which wouldn't even make my top one hundred Springsteen songs (early on I used to write posts about songs that coincided with holidays until I realized I was writing about songs that weren't exactly my favorites just to meet a theme) in Vol. LXXIX.  Guessing that in the future there's going to be a shitload of Springsteen posts--there's a lot of good songs to be written about....

"Blinded by the Light" was the first song on Springsteen's first album, the gloriously entitled, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.   It was released as the first single from the LP, but the song did not chart.  The album peaked at #60 on the Billboard 200.

Fun Fact:  While Springsteen's version wasn't a hit single, Manfred Mann's Earth Band released a cover version that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976.  It is the only Springsteen penned tune to hit the top of the singles charts.

You'd be hard pressed to name a better debut song from a debut album than "Blinded by the Light."  Springsteen pulls out all the stops--magnificent lyrics (check out the plethora of rhymes), an inspired vocal (you can hear inklings of what Springsteen would become), and a band that captures all the raucousness that the song embodies.  I've always loved the guitar intro (what a spiral would sound like if it played music), and Clarence Clemons wailing sax as the band repeats "I was blinded" over and over at the song's close.  A paean to the vagaries and bravado of youth--just a delightful gem.

Lyric Sheet:  "Mama always told me not to look into the sights of the sun/Whoa, but Mama, that's where the fun is, oh yeah..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXX--Bob Marley: Three Little Birds

Just a bit late again...and that's one New Year's Resolution for 2024 already down the drain....

During the early days of the pandemic, my youngest son and I watched dozens of documentaries, one of which was the very well done Marley, a thorough look at the life of the reggae star.  While it was a bit late in the game, it was also my introduction to this week's tune.  As an aside, later that summer, once the baseball season had started, it was the walk-up song for Giants' catcher Chadwick Tromp (there's one of the better names in baseball history).  As the saying goes, sometimes it is indeed a small world....

Bob Marley was featured in the twelfth (!) post on Friday Night Jukebox, for one of my all-time favorite tunes, "Redemption Song."  When I first started I didn't do bio paragraphs, but since this is international superstar Bob Marley there isn't much my meager talents can add to his history.  Suffice it to say he is one of the all-time greats, both as a musician and as a human being.

"Three Little Birds" (many think the song is called "Don't Worry About a Thing" or "Every Little Thing Is Gonna Be Alright") was released in 1980 on Marley's seminal album, ExodusThe song was released as a single in the U.K. and reached #17.  The album hit #8 in the U.K. and was Marley's biggest hit in America peaking at #20 on the Billboard 200.

Fun Fact:  Time magazine named Exodus the album of the century.  High praise indeed!

Throughout my years writing posts for FNJ, I've noted a time or two (or a hundred) how artists can often do so much with so little (also known as The Wonder That Is Simplicity), and "Three Little Birds" is the essence of minimalism.  The song has one verse and one chorus (the chorus is two lines repeated once each) and Marley sings them to perfection (the closing is just the two lines of the chorus over and over and over).  The song itself is a call to not let worry get in the way and just enjoy that moments life gives us.  It was also the song I sent to my family after Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 Presidential Election--and hopefully a good luck charm for Biden/Harris in 2024....

Lyric Sheet:  "Singing, 'Don't worry about a thing/Cause every little thing is gonna be alright..."
