Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLIX--Raspberries: Go All the Way

A week late and a dollar short...or something like that....

For whatever reason, when I do my weekly half-assed research, I always do my readings on the performing artist, the album, and the song itself before I listen to it with the lyric sheet (the last one is usually repeated several times before I write the post).  However, this week I listened to the song first (mostly because it had been a while since I heard it) and was only about halfway through it when I realized (better late than never), "Jesus, this song is on a whole nother level."  And somewhat to my surprise, my half-assed research found that many others have had that very same thought....

Raspberries formed in 1970 in one of rock and roll's truly great cities, Cleveland (Cleveland rocks!).  While the band had a relatively short career disbanding in 1975, they are considered one of the pioneers of Power pop.  Their frontman, Eric Carmen, would go on to have quite a solo career, registering three top five singles, and writing hits for several other artists.  For their career, Raspberries released four studio albums (with two hitting the top 100 albums) and ten singles (three of which reached the top twenty).  They had a quasi-reunion in 1999-2000 (without Eric Carmen), and the original four members reunited in 2004-2005 for a very successful and critically acclaimed tour.

"Go All the Way" was the second single released from their debut album, the rather adventurously entitled RaspberriesThe single was the biggest of their career, reaching #5 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually selling over a million copies.  The album peaked at #51 on the Billboard 200.

Fun Fact:  When Carmen wrote this week's featured tune, he hoped that by making the female the aggressor in the sexually provocative song it would help with the censors.  While the song had few problems in America (though whether Carmen's hopes were realized is debatable), the BBC in the U.K. was having none of it and banned the song from its airwaves.

One can literally listen to the first forty-five seconds of "Go All the Way" and realize that one is hearing a song on "a whole nother level."  It opens with a rollicking guitar solo before segueing into a lush melody and Carmen's silky-smooth vocals.  The chorus is as sweet as the nectar of the Gods (good things, too, as it makes up most of the song--the stanzas are remarkably short).  I would be remiss if I didn't mention the "Come ons" in the bridge --when you hear it you'll know what I mean.  If ever there was a song that is the very essence of Power pop, "Go All the Way" is it.  A truly stunning accomplishment.

Lyric Sheet:  "Please go all the way/Just hold me close/Don't ever let me go..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLVIII--Peter and Gordon: A World Without Love

Every now and again, I can't recall what made a song stand out for me and become an all-time favorite, and this week's tune is that now and again.  Tried to think if it was a movie or a top songs list, but nothing came to me.  In the end, I decided I'm at an age where it's entirely possible that I heard it on the radio a few years removed from when it was a hit--and just carried it with me to this day....

Peter and Gordon (Peter Asher and Gordon Waller) formed in the U.K. in 1962, were a part of the British Invasion, released fourteen albums in six years, and had four hits that sold over a million copies before going their separate ways in 1968.  Peter Asher went on to be a record producer extraordinaire, producing records for thirty-seven different artists (most notably James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt--he also managed Ronstadt), won three production Grammys, and spent some time in the executive suites at various record labels.  Waller dabbled in musical theater, released a few solo albums, and worked as a salesman.  They reunited in 2005 and performed off and on together until 2009 when, sadly, Waller died of a massive heart attack.  Asher continues to perform, wrote a book about his time with the Beatles (Paul McCartney dated Asher's sister, Jane, and lived with her family, sharing a room with Peter in the Beatles very early days), and produced a record for Susanna Hoffs of Bangles fame just this year.

"A World Without Love" was the first single ever released by Peter and Gordon, from their ever so cleverly named debut album, Peter and Gordon.  The single would reach #1 (with a bullet!) in both the U.K. and the United States, as well as Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand.  It is also included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.  The album peaked at #18 in Great Britain, and #21 here in America.

Fun Fact #1:  Paul McCartney wrote this week's tune when he was sixteen (why he's one of the all-time greats, indeed), held onto it for a few years, and never felt it was good enough for the Beatles.  When Peter and Gordon got their recording contract, Asher asked McCartney if they could have it.  McCartney gave it to them, and the rest as they say, is history.

Fun Fact #2:  This week's tune is one of two Lennon and McCartney songs (every song released during their time together as Beatles was a Lennon/McCartney tune, regardless of who wrote it or when) not recorded by the Beatles to hit #1.  The other?  A cover of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" by Sir Elton John.

If an alien came down to earth, and somewhat oddly (I'd think) asked one of us to name a song that epitomizes sixties pop, one couldn't really go wrong with "A World Without Love."  Lush harmonies, a smooth and creamy melody, and a bass drum that serves as the heartbeat (literally--listen closely) of the song make for a song that sounds every bit as shiny and new as it did fifty years ago when it was first released.  Throw in a theme of waiting for the love of your life and knowing she'll be there someday and you have one of pop music's most magical moments ever.

Lyric Sheet:  "Please lock me away/And don't allow the day/Here inside/Where I hide/With my loneliness..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLVII--Paul Young: What Becomes of the Broken Hearted

In which emaycee loses what little credibility he has to write about music by admitting that he likes the Paul Young version of this week's tune better than Jimmy Ruffin's original Motown version.  The horror!

Paul Young had a brief mention just a few months ago in Friday Night Jukebox (Vol. CDXLII) for his cover version of Hall and Oates' blue-eyed soul classic "Everytime You Go Away."  Young was born in 1956 in Luton, England and began performing in bands while still in school.  He performed as a bass guitarist with three bands (Kat Kool and the Kool Kats, Streetband, with whom he had a minor hit in the U.K., and Q-Tips) before starting a solo career in 1982.  Relying on a knack for recording catchy versions of old soul hits, his first two solo albums went to number one in the U.K., and his next two reached number four.  Young's solo commercial success slowed considerably after that, but by then he'd had enough hits to stay on oldies tours forever.  For his career, Young has released ten studio albums, fifteen compilations, four box sets, and thirty-seven singles.  Young formed a Tex-Mex band called Los Pacaminos in 1992 that released two albums and released his tenth solo studio album just this year.

Fun Fact:  Young sang the opening lines of Band Aid's single for Ethiopian famine relief "Do They Know It's Christmas?" because David Bowie was unable to participate.  Talk about big shoes to fill!  Bowie would later sing the lines at Live Aid.

Paul Young's version of "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" was originally released on the soundtrack to the movie Fried Green Tomatoes.  The single would reach #22 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100; the album did not chart.  Needless to say, the song does show up on a number of Young's compilation packages.

As my regular readers know (all three of you), emaycee is a big fan of blue-eyed soul which would seem to make Paul Young a natural for me.  Alas, no--many of Young's songs waste his wonderful voice with over production, especially on his soul cover versions (with the notable exception of "Everytime You Go Away").  But for whatever reason (his getting older? the eighties being over?), "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" doesn't suffer from the usual fate (too much), and Young delivers an impassioned plea for all of those who are unlucky in love.  His vocals pretty much carry the day--there's a nice sax solo, but it's mostly Young's velvety voice that captures the pain of a lost love and the hope for another.  His impromptu vocal riffs on the lyrics at the end brings it home.  God knows there have been plenty of songs about broken hearts--with this one, Young adds a good one to their pantheon.  And for those wondering just what does become of the broken hearted?  Why they carry one looking for a new love, of course....

Lyric Sheet:  "I'll be searching everywhere/Just to find someone who cares/I'll be looking every day/I know I'm gonna find a way..."

Enjoy:
