Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXXIX--Edith Piaf: La Vie en rose

A couple of years back I was fiddling around on the computer when a commercial for Stella Artois beer came on TV, and as a trumpet dreamily played a melody, I was certain I knew the song it was playing.  In a roundabout way I did--it's been featured in commercials, movies, and TV shows many times (I'm certain there are numerous classical pieces that have the same familiarity without knowledge of the particular piece).  However, I did not know that this week's tune was the most famous song of one of France's most famous performers.  It took about two listens to fall in love with, and it's been a favorite ever since....

The Little Sparrow (La Mome Piaf), Edith Piaf, was born in Paris in 1915, and had about as unfortunate of a life as any artist featured here on Friday Night Jukebox.  Abandoned at birth by her mother, she was originally raised by her maternal grandmother until being returned to her father before he went off to fight World War I at which point she was passed off to her paternal grandmother...who ran a brothel.  Piaf was blind from the age of three until the age of seven due to keratitis (it was supposedly miraculously healed when the prostitutes who helped raise her pooled their money and paid for a pilgrimage honoring St. Therese of Lisieux).  In her teens Piaf joined her father, a street performer, and began performing music and skits on the streets of Paris.  She was pregnant at seventeen, abandoned her daughter as her mother did her, and the daughter would pass away at two from meningitis.  Piaf's gifted vocals were eventually discovered, and she began performing in brothels and nightclubs before becoming possibly France's greatest performer.  Along the way Piaf fell in love with the love of her life, Marcel Cerdan (middleweight boxing champion of the world), who died in a plane crash in 1949 while en route to see her in New York City.  During her lifetime, Piaf would also be accused of being an accessory to murder (acquitted), a traitor during the Nazi occupation of France (acquitted), suffered from crippling rheumatoid arthritis, had a stomach ulcer, was in three car accidents, and also was addicted to painkillers and alcohol.  Unfortunately, such a tragic life led to an all too early death, as Piaf passed from what was believed to be a liver ailment at the age of forty-seven.  Piaf's funeral procession through Paris drew thousands of people, and her ceremony at the cemetery was attended by over 100,000 of her fans.

Fun Fact:  If you're a movie fan, I would highly recommend the 2007 biopic La Vie en roseMarion Cotillard, who won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance, is absolutely dazzling as Piaf (she's pretty much dazzling, period).

"La Vie en rose" (lyrics were written by Piaf) was released on a ten-inch single, Chansons Parisiennes, in 1947.  Her version peaked at #23 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard charts.  English lyrics were eventually written for the song and in 1950 six different versions reached the Billboard chart.

"La Vie en Rose" translates as "life through rose-colored glasses" (literal translation is "life in pink"), and the song describes how lovely life looks when we're in love.  Piaf's voice takes on a serenity as she sings it, and the song becomes a veritable love lullaby.  The melody is lush which is very convenient for me as I neither speak nor read French so at least I've been able to hum it all week.  It's a beautiful song from another era by a unique talent--and a very fine addition to the annals of Friday Night Jukebox.

Lyric Sheet:  As noted above I am not familiar with French except in the most trivial of ways (C'est la vie!), so there isn't much sense in featuring lyrics here.  For those interested, though, at the link to the French lyrics I provided if you scroll down there is another link to an English translation.  Have fun!

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXXVIII--Foo Fighters: Next Year

After I left the music business, I spent two years trying to make a living as a freelance writer, failed miserably, ended up dead broke, and moved back in with my Mom to avoid starvation.  It also meant I had to leave my beloved St. Louis for a not so beloved Fort Wayne, Indiana.  Eventually I got a job with KMart, and a few months into my tenure I was asked where I'd be willing to move.  I was told the best answer was anywhere, so I put anywhere with the secret hope I'd miraculously end up back in St. Louis. Somewhere in the midst of these changes, this week's tune was released, and it reminded me (though the song itself had absolutely nothing to do with my situation) every time I heard it about my desire to get back home.  Alas, I never got back, but life, as it often does, had a funny way of working out.  And yet still, our song of the week holds a special place in my heart....

I wrote about the Foo Fighters in November of 2020, so I'll just update their bio this week.  On the bright side, the band released another album, won four more Grammys, played at President Biden's inauguration, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  On the sad side, their long time drummer Taylor Hawkins passed away last year.  The band continues on, however, and might I add that their contribution to music over the past twenty-five years has been quite impressive.

"Next Year" was the fifth and final single released from their 1999 album There Is Nothing Left to LoseThe single, though it received a decent amount of airplay, did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100.  The album, however, reached the top ten, and won a Grammy for Rock Album of the Year.

Fun Fact:  Of this week's tune, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl said, "Next Year is a piece of shit!  That song is so stupid.  It's weird."  Contrary to Grohl's assertion, my weekly half-assed research has shown that the song is a solid favorite of the band's countless fans, myself included.

One of the reviews of "Next Year" compared it favorably to Oasis' hit "Wonderwall" (I like the song but that's a bit of a stretch) but noted that the Foo Fighters at their best owed a lot to Brit Pop...which I thought a spot-on observation.  The music is sticky sweet pop, Grohl's vocals capture all its sticky sweetness, and the band, from the jangly guitars to Taylor Hawkins drumming (which seemed to take on a life of its own in my listening this week), wraps itself around the stick sweetness and it all makes for a dandy piece of pop pie.  Grohl has said the song is about an Air Force pilot thinking about going home after his tour of duty, all the while without knowing if he will get home because of the inherent danger of his missions.  In the end, it's a song about going home, and that's a sentiment most of us have, and can relate to, every day (albeit considerably more safely than the pilot).

Lyric Sheet:  "I'm in the sky tonight/There I can keep by your side/Watching the whole world wind around/I'll be coming home next year..."

Enjoy (Note that there's an album version and a shorter version that was released as the single--even though I'm more familiar with the single version, after hearing both I liked the extra minute and decided to feature the longer one.):

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXXVII--Babyface: When Can I See You

Every now and again a song just blows you away the first time you hear it, and this week's tune would be a perfect example for me.  Late one sleepless night as I was flipping channels I heard it on MTV (VH-1?), and I stopped everything I was doing, turned up volume on the TV and marveled at what a wonder I was hearing.  I was still managing for Camelot Music at the time, and the first thing I did the next morning when I got to work was pop open a copy of the CD single and listened to it several times before we opened the doors.  Hell, I even bought the sheet music for guitar, though I never came close to being able to play it....

Kenneth Edmonds, known professionally as Babyface, was born in 1959 (just two months before me) in Indianapolis.  He began writing songs as a teenager, and by the time he was eighteen he was playing guitar in his first band, Manchild.  Shortly thereafter he joined the band Deele where he would meet Antonio "L.A." Reid, which would prove to be a fortuitous moment in his career.  Edmonds and Reid would go on to become one of the great writing/producing teams in music history.  Edmonds has written or produced twenty-six number one hits, and has won twelve Grammy Awards.  He released his first solo effort in 1986, and his latest album came out in 2022.  For his solo career, Edmonds has released nine studio albums, plus two albums with Manchild and three with Deele.  The list of his production/songwriting credits would be too numerous to list but suffice it to say it is quite impressive.

Fun Fact:  Funk great Bootsy Collins coined Edmonds nickname because--surprise, surprise--Edmonds looked so young when they first met.  Truth be told, Edmonds still looks pretty young....

"When Can I See You" was the fifth single released from his rather coolly named 1993 album For the Cool in You.  The single hit #4 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100 and is the highest charting single of his solo career.  The album reached #16 on the Billboard 200.

I've written a time or two here about simplicity in creating music, and "When Can I See You" hits all the right notes for it.  Basically, the song is just Edmonds vocals, his acoustic guitar (he uses its body to add to the rhythm section by tapping it with the heel of his hand), drums (listen carefully and you'll notice they sound like a heartbeat), and what I believe is a Friday Night Jukebox first:  finger snaps.  Edmonds silky smooth voice caresses the lyrics as he wistfully sings of a man who's not ready for the relationship to be over...but it is.  As I usually do in the lead up to writing my weekly posts, I listened to it numerous times and still, almost thirty years down the road, I listened in wonder to the heavenly sounds that a mere mortal had wrought.  It's just one fine damn tune.

Lyric Sheet:  "When does my someday begin?/When I'll find someone again?/And what if I am not truly over/What am I supposed to do then, baby, baby?..."

Enjoy:
