Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXIX--Bob Dylan and the Band: Apple Suckling Tree

The top three non-familial influences on my musical tastes would be (in no particular order): 1) WLS-89 AM radio in Chicago, for instilling the love of pop music in me, 2) The rockumentary (which all three of my regular readers will know I've mentioned a time or two or a hundred) The Last Waltz which not only introduced me to the Band (and several other artists), but opened up the world of Americana music to me, and 3) Rolling Stone's tenth anniversary issue, in which numerous critics cited the best songs/albums released during the magazine's first ten years, and which I spend a considerable chunk of my college years trying to track down most (all?) of said songs/albums for my burgeoning collection--one of which just happens to be this week's tune.  Seemed like a good way to end 2023....

I've written about Bob Dylan three times on Friday Night Jukebox (one, two, three) and the Band once (only once? yikes, I've got some work to do) in Vol. CLXXXVI, and as I've noted a time or two or a hundred before in these bios, there really isn't much I can add to the volumes that have been written about either by folks much more talented and knowledgeable than I.  I would, however, like to note a little about the album from which this week's song comes.  While The Basement Tapes were released in 1975 (a couple of years before my musical interests in either of the two), it was actually recorded in 1967 and between then and its release had developed a reputation of almost mythical proportions (numerous bootleg copies of songs were made, and Dylan at the time was thought to be the most bootlegged artist in history).  While the luster has worn off somewhat (Rolling Stone only had it at #291 on its 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums), it's still considered to be a career changer for Dylan, the start of the Americana movement, and the father of alt-country.  Not a bad resume.

"Apple Suckling Tree" was the fourth song on side two (yes, I own the LP) of The Basement Tapes.  It was not released as a single (no song was), and the album would reach #7 on the Billboard 200.

Fun Fact:  Dylan and the Band only took two takes of the song--the second one was the version that ended up on the album. It is absolutely stunning to me that they could record a song this brilliant in two takes.

This one is just fun--not really sure what the lyrics mean (or what they are), but in the end it's just five guys jamming, and having a hell of a time doing it.  The first standout is Garth Hudson's organ--as a Band fan I'm used to hearing Hudson's excellence on the keyboards, but I think this one is just a good old-fashioned boogie-woogie, and it rocks.  Second is guitar virtuoso Robbie Robertson...on drums.  Just a beat maniac.  And lastly is Dylan's vocals which capture perfectly the song's raucousness.  In the end, it's just a kick ass rock and roller--man, if you can't swing to "Apple Suckling Tree" you're probably dead.

[A note on the lyrics--as I listened to the song, it was brutally obvious that the lyrics listed on every web site did not match the lyrics Dylan was singing.  Or even very close.  So I actually went to Dylan's web site and sure enough he lists the same lyrics as every other lyrics site.  You got me...which is why I'm just going with the chorus, because it's the only thing that sounds like what he's singing.]

Lyric Sheet:  "Under that apple suckling tree, oh yeah/ Underneath that apple suckling tree, oh yeah/Underneath that tree/There's just gonna be you and me/Underneath that apple suckling tree, oh yeah..."

Friday Night Jukebox, CDLXVIII--Uncle Tupelo: Sandusky

A Christmas miracle--only one day late!

My introduction to this week's tune--as it has numerous times before here on Friday Night Jukebox--came when my daughter sent me a copy of this week's album after I had told her how much I enjoyed the Greatest Hits CD she'd sent me earlier from this week's artist.  Turned out to be a great record--I listened to it for months driving back and forth from my home and Warren, MI where the tail end of my career in retail management had taken me....

I wrote about Uncle Tupelo in Jukebox XL (akin to last week more than four hundred FNJ posts ago), and like last week's post, I'm happy with the brief bio I wrote and don't have anything to add...other than to say how much I still enjoy listening to Uncle Tupelo.  One hell of a short-lived band.

"Sandusky" was the second to last track on their third studio album, the rather timely titled March 16-20, 1992The song was not released as a single, and though the album sold more than their first two studio efforts combined, did not chart either.

Fun Fact:  The album was named for the five days the band recorded it--and it's absolutely amazing to me how they managed to put together such a tremendous record in so little time.

Fun Fact #2:  The album was produced by Peter Buck of REM fame.  Buck let the band members stay at his house while recording the album so as to save money for the studio recording fees.

Jeff Tweedy said that "Sandusky" was the track he was most proud of and that the band created it in a collaborative effort while in the studio.  He also described the song as beautiful--and I think his description nailed it.  The song is a simple instrumental: it's basically an acoustic guitar with a banjo providing the backing vocals (so to speak), and the softly stated drums capturing the subtle nuances of its hopeful core (all of the instruments are played exquisitely).  For whatever reason, the song has always seemed to me to be the soundtrack for having survived some sort of tribulation and watching it in the rearview as you move on with your life.  As an F.Y.I., I have absolutely no idea why Sandusky (assuming it's named for the city of Sandusky, Ohio) was chosen as the title.  The city (famed for being the home of the amusement park Cedar Point) is believed to be named for a Wyandot word meaning water (it sits on Lake Erie), so maybe that holds a clue.  No matter--it's a moment where a band came together and created a little folk magic...and the world is always a better place with a little folk magic.

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXVII--Warren Zevon: Mohammed's Radio

A little better this week with timeliness....

I was watching one of the latter episodes of Roadies, when Jackson Browne performed a mostly acoustic version of this week's tune and reminded me that it had been years since I'd heard it, and just how good it was.  I revisited this week's artist's original version of it (which I have zero idea of how I came to originally know it), and it was like catching up with an old friend.  By the way, for the three of you keeping track at home, this is the sixth Friday Night Jukebox post inspired by watching Roadies, which is pretty impressive for a show that had a whopping ten episodes....

I wrote about Warren Zevon in Jukebox LXVII (which would mean that I've written exactly four hundred FNJ posts since then, which is kind of cool in a major dorky way), and after rereading that post, decided I'd done a pretty good job of briefly outlining his musical bio, and am happy to leave it at that.

"Mohammed's Radio" was the seventh song on his second studio album, the ever so cleverly named Warren ZevonThe song was not released as a single, but the album would be the first of Zevon's career to hit the charts, peaking at #189 on the Billboard 200.

Fun Fact:  Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac fame provided backing vocals on "Mohammed's Radio," with Buckingham also playing guitar.

Throughout "Mohammed's Radio" Zevon sings of the trials and tribulations of everyday folks, but with the chorus he interposes a remedy for the day-to-day drudgery:  music.  There's an understatement that carries the song, both musically and in Zevon's vocals, and in an odd twist, I actually think that gives the song an anthemic nature.  In the end, though, I don't think Zevon is singing about the power of music to redeem us, or the power of music to heal us, but rather the power of music to help us persist, and how maybe, just maybe, that's good enough.

Lyric Sheet:  "Don't it make you want to rock and roll?/All night long, Mohammed's radio/I heard somebody singin' sweet and soulful/On the radio, Mohammed's radio..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDLXVI--Will Young: Leave Right Now

Once again it's a week and a day late--story of my life....

Must be something about working at Save-A-Lot and discovering music artists from the British Isles--this week's artist will be the third (George Ezra and Hozier were the others) that I first heard and was captured by while slaving my ass working there, and he'll also be the third featured here on Friday Night Jukebox.  A week and a day late, that is....

Will Young was born in Wokingham, England in 1979 and like many a FNJ alum began performing at a young age.  In 1998 he began attending the University of Exeter, where he would eventually graduate with a degree in politics.  Young was involved in numerous school musical productions and toward the end of his studies a fellow student pointed out that Pop Idol (the U.K.'s forefather of American Idol) was holding auditions.  Young filled out an application, was eventually accepted as a contestant, and became the first ever winner of its competition.  Young's stardom began at that point, and over the past twenty-one years he's sold over eight million albums (most of his chart success has come in the U.K.), won two Brit Awards, toured regularly, broke into acting, and has made numerous musical appearances on TV.  For his career, Young has released eight studio albums (with four # 1's in the U.K.), and thirty-three singles (again with four # 1's).  Young came out as gay after his Idol victory, and is involved with a number of charities helping the LGBTQ community, as well as many other charitable organizations.

"Leave Right Now" was the first single released from Young's second album, the rather timelessly named Friday's Child.  The single would reach #1 on the U.K. Singles Chart (and #81 here in America), while the album also hit #1 (though it did not chart in the States).

Fun Fact:  Written by Eg White (great name), "Leave Right Now" won the Ivor Novello Award (an annual award presented in the U.K. for composing) for Best Song Musically and Lyrically in 2004.  In the years since its release, it has also been featured on two Best Songs of All-Time lists in Great Britian.

It's not always easy, when writing a song about seeing an old love again and being reminded that the feelings have yet to go away, to keep it from turning into saccharine mush.  I think with "Leave Right Now," though, both White, musically and lyrically, as well as Young vocally, do a fine job of capturing the heartache and sparing us the schmaltz.  The highlight of the song is far and away Young's vocals, as his blue-eyed soul illuminates the lingering romantic feelings, and carries them to a place that many of us have been before.  Not surprisingly for an emaycee fave, the chorus is infatuating and Young misses nary a beat as he delivers heartfelt note after heartfelt note. In the end, it's just another in a long line of terrific pop songs that have graced the annals of Friday Night Jukebox.

Lyric Sheet:  "I think I better leave right now/Before I fall any deeper/I think I better leave right now/Feeling weaker and weaker/Somebody better show me how..."
