Worst. President. Ever.

...was a bumper sticker I recently saw on a beat up old white van, with an Obama logo, right next to a "Trump for President" sticker.

Which got me to thinking:

• More Americans covered with health insurance than at any time in our nation's history
• Stimulus package which saved the U.S. economy
• Saving the auto industry
• Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act
• More jobs created than any President in the last fifty years, save fellow Democrat Bill Clinton
• Dow Jones more than doubled since President Obama took office
• Federal deficit cut in half
• Marriage equality is now the law of the land
• Don't ask, don't tell in the ash heap of history
• Iced Osama bin Laden
• Paris climate accord
• Treaty with Iran
• Normalization of relations with Cuba

Here's hoping Hillary Clinton is even worse.

Reasons to be cheerful, 2015 edition

It can be easy in light of the vile words and actions of Donald Trump and his supporters (and other republican candidates), or the never ending strength of the NRA, or another disappointing decision concerning murder by police officers in Cleveland, or another senseless killing by police in Chicago, or the constant stream of hatred directed toward Muslims, or the continued influence of money in our political system, among many, many others to remember that we Liberals had a pretty good year in 2015.

   To wit:

• We have three solid candidates to offer the American people for the Presidency of the United States in 2016--which is three more than republicans have.
• Minimum wage increases were passed from Los Angeles to Rhode Island to New York--with wages as high as $15.00.  There's still work to do, but it's a solid start.
• A treaty was passed with Iran that in the long run will make the Middle East--and America--safer.
• Relations with Cuba were normalized after more than fifty years of poisoned and pointless policy that accomplished absolutely nothing other than securing Cuban-American votes for republicans in Florida.
• Marriage equality is the law of the land--let me repeat that:  Marriage equality is the law of the land.
• Obamacare broke records again this year for sign-ups and the number of Americans without health insurance is at all-time lows.
• A climate accord was reached in Paris that, while imperfect, is nonetheless once again a good start for the good guys.
• Bernie Sanders--a Democratic Socialist?  Who'd have ever thought he'd run such a strong campaign?  And, yeah, it's a long shot he'll win, but it's the best shot the left wing of our party has ever had.

On Kim Davis

Despite the pleas of religious liberty with regard to Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis' refusal to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, in the end freedom of religion means that you're an American first and servant of God second.  She can no more deny licenses based on God's authority than she can (from a biblical standpoint) reject the Ten Commandments based on America's authority.

Brothers-in-arms

The National Organization for (Heterosexual) Marriage (NOM) held a "March for (Heterosexual) Marriage" at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. this past weekend for which about 6000 people attended to share their intolerance with the rest of the world, and as I was browsing the pictures from the march in this piece from Think Progress it dawned on me that there wasn't much difference between NOM and the Ku Klux Klan.

After all, both organizations are hate groups with viewpoints from another century that cloak their bigotry in religion.

And it's equally true that America would be infinitely better off without either group.

Na, na, na, na, hey, hey, goodbye

In 2004, voters in Michigan voted overwhelmingly (58% -42%) to ban same sex marriage and civil unions.

Today, a federal judge ruled Michigan's same sex marriage ban unconstitutional, making Michigan the 18th state to legalize gay marriage (almost halfway there).

Not content with wasting $7 million dollars a day because they delayed implementation of Obamacare to score political points, republicans, through AG Bill Schuette, will appeal the ruling so they can waste even more of Michiganders' hard earned money to earn even more political points with the fringe of their party.  This despite the fact that polls now show a solid majority of Michiganders (56%) favor gay marriage.

I note this because I was one of the 42% ten years ago who voted against the ban to same sex marriage.  I'm not looking for a pat on the back--I just want to remind people that societal change takes time, and that eventually, the right thing to do will win out.

It happened today in Michigan.

President Obama overturned "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

The Obama administration stopped the Solicitor General from defending the Defense of Marriage Act.

President Obama is the first sitting President to come out in favor of marriage equality.

For the first time in our history, a majority of the American people are in favor of marriage equality.  Do we really want to hand the Presidency to a man who will be beholden to a party that thinks the word "faggot" is an acceptable way to describe Gay and Lesbian Americans? 

Fuck no, we don't.

Depressing, Part II

The above quote is one of those quaint little things we like to pat ourselves on the back for, all the while getting our asses kicked again and again by republicans.  Instead of discussing Obama's stance on gay marriage in a positive light--i.e., what it can do for Democratic victory in 2012, how it rallies the base, Digby wants to discuss semantics.

David Atkins on the other hand, takes a nice little piece of propaganda for the good guys and lets himself get all hot and bothered because we passed laws outlawing the banning of interracial marriage, but doggone it, we still have people who are prejudiced and the people who were against it were never held accountable.

We are not Jesus--we are not going to feed the multitudes with a handful of fishes and a few loaves of bread.  In a perfect world, Obama would take a strong stance on marriage equality and no one would be prejudiced.  That is not the world we live in, and the self-righteousness of Digby and Atkins doesn't do a goddamn thing to advance the agenda.

Over the past couple of years, we've had a chance to see what sweating the small stuff has gotten us--Gov. Walker in Wisconsin, Gov. Scott in Florida, Gov. Kasich in Ohio, and Gov. Snyder in Michigan.  It's also gotten us statehouses that are full of republicans free to pass their agenda because of overwhelming majorities because we "Progressives" would rather stand around and have a circle jerk of ideas.

Frankly, they can blow their self-righeousness out their asses:  I'd rather fucking eat.
