Freedom's just another word

How many times have we heard republicans scream about judicial activism and how activist judges are taking away our freedom?  Or bitch about Democratic Presidents not following the Constitution?  Remember Kim Davis and religious liberty?  Hell, republicans put the "freedom" in freedom fries.

But banning Muslims from coming into the United States?  Fuck, yeah, we can do that!  Screw that freedom of religion bullshit in the First Amendment!

It appears republicans new rallying cry is "Give me liberty...but screw everybody else!"

On Kim Davis

Despite the pleas of religious liberty with regard to Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis' refusal to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, in the end freedom of religion means that you're an American first and servant of God second.  She can no more deny licenses based on God's authority than she can (from a biblical standpoint) reject the Ten Commandments based on America's authority.

You sure about that?

Thanks to a GoFundMe fundraising effort for the pizzeria in Indiana that said it wouldn't cater to a gay wedding and subsequently had to close its doors, over $800,000 has been raised for the family that owns the restaurant.  In response to the tidy sum of money, one of the owners said, "God has blessed us for standing up for what we believe, and not denying him."

Isn't it entirely possible that the large amount of money raised is Satan's way of celebratin' their hatin'?

Seems just as plausible to me--after all, Christ didn't say "Love your neighbor as yourself--unless, of course, he's gay."

And the difference is?

So, Indiana "Governor" Mike Pence signs a law making it legal to discriminate against the LGBT community under the guise of religious "liberty," and a Hoosier restaurateur goes on the radio and announces that he already has discriminated against gays (showing what passes for courage in Indiana, he told the gay customers he couldn't serve them because his machines weren't working) and thinks because he owns his business he has a right to do whatever he wants.

While being interviewed, he gave neither his name nor the name of his business.

Can anybody tell me the difference between this guy and those gutless hatemongers of old who rode around on horses (and later, in cars) with white hoods on their heads spreading intolerance while proving to be a massive embarrassment to all that is good about America?

Because I sure don't see one.

Priceless

The Satanic Temple has started a campaign asking that they not be bound by anti-abortion laws and are citing the Supreme Court's decision in the Hobby Lobby case to bolster its exemption from such laws.

While this particular example is likely more show than substance, it does demonstrate just how far from the main the idea of religious liberty can be taken.

It's what the Roberts 5 invited with their Burwell v. Hobby Lobby decision, and this will not likely be the last or most serious comeuppance the religious right will be facing over the next several years.

Ruh-roh

While much of today's hand-wringing over the decision to allow Knobby Jobby to refuse to cover birth control for their employees is warranted, in the long term this decision by arguably the worst Supreme Court in the history of our country could end up opening a can of worms that conservatives will forever wish had been kept sealed:

1)  I kept this piece from a couple of months ago--the prediction proved wrong (it called the Knobby Jobby argument DOA), but the strategy of turning corporate personhood into a detriment is not.  The decision allowing individuals at the head of a corporation to discriminate based on their religious views also erases the line between corporate entity and corporate leader--thus it could make individuals responsible as well for corporate malfeasance.
2)  Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher and every politically oriented comic in America has to be laughing with glee at the "sincerely held religious beliefs" wording in Justice Alito's opinion.  Watching courts trip all over themselves trying to decide what exactly "sincerely held religious beliefs" entails (or more likely, refusing to) as well as the nut cases who are going to try and sneak everything from doobies to doughnuts into that exemption is going to be a comedy goldmine.
3) Big business is about as popular today as is having one's eyes pierced with needles.  Think the Supreme Court deciding that corporations (however limited in scope it may be) have a right to decide\about the sexual mores of the American people is going to make big business any more popular?
4)  Republican Senate candidates Terri Lynn Land (MI) and Joni Ernst (IA) can pretty much kiss their chances of winning this November goodbye (and so can plenty of other republicans in blue learning districts/states with credible opponents).  I live in Michigan and it took all of five minutes after the Knobby Jobby decision was announced for someone to send out a petition calling out Land for supporting corporations forcing their religious ideology down our throats.  Think this isn't going to be a rallying cry for Democrats among women (who already overwhelmingly support Democrats) from now until November?

Knobby Jobby won the battle; we'll win the war.

Turnabout is fair play

Well, well, well--seems the gay haters have realized they're fighting a losing battle, and are changing their tactics to focus on the gays being a threat to their religious liberty, and therefore, they should still be able to discriminate against the LGBT community.

Believe it or not, I actually have no problem with this tactic...as long as it's a two-way street.  There are many religious demoninations that support gay rights--shouldn't those who practice these faiths be able to discriminate against the gay haters in support of their religious liberty?

I work in retail--it'd be all kinds of fun to have a litmus test for those whose views run contrary to mine.  Excuse me, sir, but how do you feel about abortion?  The death penalty?  Raising the minimum wage?

It would never happen, but you have to admit there would be some real enjoyment in watching some old white idiot go apoplectic when he doesn't get his Quarter Pounder with Cheese because he's hating on the gays.

Dixie dust

You know...there's something mighty fucked up about the South:
  • Seems it's Confederate Heritage Month...because enslaving human beings, trying to break up the United States of America, and more American deaths than any other military conflict in our history because of some lunatic notions about states' rights superseding basic human dignity are so, so much to be proud of.
  • Texas, South Carolina, and Tennessee have decided that they're not interested in free Medicaid and don't care if more of their people die because of a lack of healthcare.  How letting people die gibes with their "pro-life" views will take a more batshit insane mind than mine to explain.
  • North Carolina doesn't think the Constitutional protection of freedom from religion applies to their state, and eleven state representatives have sponsored a resolution saying they can sponsor their very own state religion.  Here's guessing it won't be Wicca. (Note: this resolution has since been withdrawn.)
  • In perhaps the creme de la creme of Southern (not) hospitality, Tennesse has passed a bill in both houses that ties a family's welfare assistance to the performance of their kids grades (substandard grades can lead to a 30% reduction in benefits).  Hey kid, I know you're only seven, but get a C on this test and your baby sister's going hungry next week!
What kind of fucking animals are these people?

The South is a pimple on the ass of the United States of America.
