How do these fucking people look themselves in the mirror?

Trump says he has so successfully intimidated Rand Paul that he is now an obedient little cuck.

May there be a special place in hell for him

Mitch McConnell hasn’t been seen or heard from in 25 days in the hospital. Yet he still has a job, still getting paid, and getting unlimited world class healthcare. The man who voted against a living wage, against universal healthcare, and against guaranteed paid leave, is now getting all three.

Happy Labor Day!

Your damn right they did!

I'm a proud member of the UFCW.

As I've noted numerous times before, this is my favorite holiday.  Despite Corporate America's and the GOP's best efforts to make it only a day to celebrate workers of all stripes (which it is), it's still the day when we celebrate all that labor unions have given us:  higher wages, better benefits, safer workplaces, and a voice in our careers.  Union made, union proud, and union strong.

This year I've chosen Billy Bragg's version of "Which Side Are You On?" to extoll this special day.  The song was originally written in 1912 by Florence Reece (at the ripe old age of twelve) while her father was on strike and updated it in 1931 to the version sung today.   Reece, the wife of a union organizer for the miners, updated the song when her family was terrorized by a mining company while her husband was on strike during the Harlan County War in Kentucky.

Labor Lyrics:  "Oh, workers can you stand it?/Oh, tell me how you can?/Will you be a lousy scab/Or will you be a man?..."

Enjoy--and Happy Labor Day!:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXXI--Joan Shelley: Not Over by Half

A couple of years back I caught an independent film called Colewell about a woman (played with much nuance by Karen Allen) whose job as a Postal Clerk is being moved to another town, and who has to come to terms with the life and career she has had for many years coming to a close.  It was a fine character study and a film I enjoyed very much, but the cherry on top was the song played over the closing credits...which just happens to be our tune of the week.

Joan Shelley was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1985, and she's so small scale that Wikipedia doesn't even list her actual birthday.  Shelley went to the University of Georgia to be around the Athens music scene and would eventually release her debut album in 2010.  Over the course of the last dozen years, she has released nine studio albums, three albums with the all-female band Maiden Radio, and one single.  Shelley's husband, Nathan Salsburg, is a musicologist (as well as a guitarist)...which I'm sure comes in pretty handy when you make your living as a musician....

Fun Fact:  Shelley's album Electric Ursa made Rolling Stone's list of "15 Great Albums You Didn't Hear in 2014."  When you're getting noticed by Rolling Stone you know you're doing something right.

"Not Over by Half" was on Shelley's 2015 album Over and Even.  It was not released as a single, and the album did not chart.

It's been a while since I've wrote about a pure folk song, and this one is about as folk as it gets.  It's pretty much just an acoustic guitar, Shelley's vocals, and some understated harmonies.  Shelley tells the tale (tales?) of a life (lives?) at a crossroads and the spirit in all of us that keeps us pushing forward despite the difficulties (a lot like the aforementioned movie).  Shelley's got a wonderful voice and makes the most of it, and the guitar playing reminded me (for something like the millionth time) how much I love the sound of a well-played acoustic guitar.  It's also a reminder of how often music comes to us in roundabout ways, and how there will never be enough time to find all the roundabout ways.  No matter--because it's not over by half....

Lyric Sheet:  "But it's not over by half/There's a gold in your eyes blooming out through the black/And you're still standing, your hand on the map/No, it's not over, not over by half..."

Enjoy:

Inexcusable

I'm never going back...
I'm not really sure why the attached video of police in Louisville, Kentucky bothers me as much as it does--I mean, it's not as if I haven't seen a nine year old pepper sprayed or the White House tear gas peaceful protesters so Donald Trump could have a photo op over the past few days.

In the video, two white nationalists (I'm guessing) are seen (they're both gutless enough to wear masks, though not smart enough to hide their license plate) taking water and other liquids that have been set aside for protesters and either throwing it into the back of their pickup truck or just breaking it on the pavement.  The part that kills me, though, is that as people begin to get closer to the two racist pieces of shit to take photos that call them out for their cowardice, the Louisville police rush over to cut them off so they cannot take photos.  Note there was no one--absolutely no one--who was threatening these two men in any way (well, unless you count showing the two to be gutless cowards).

Two days ago I would have told you that Louisville was a nice city I visited once when my first wife and I were still dating, where we had a wonderful day and ate lunch at the best Mexican restaurant I've eaten at since my family left California.  But today, and for the rest of my life, what will be embedded in my memory is the Louisville police abetting racism.

And I can guarantee you that neither me, nor anyone in my family, will ever visit that city again.

In up to his eyeballs

Moscow Mitch swimming in Donald Trump's toilet

Think about this:  while Mitch McConnell is living in an alternate reality where he believes he's doing the work of the American people while he's fellating the wealthy, he's made life worse--and will continue to do so--for the 90% of Americans who are not rich.  Name another business where you can treat 90% of your customers like shit and still keep your job...

...other than Corporate America, of course.

McConnell's fantasy governing is reason why, not just politically in helping to win back the Senate but also in helping ordinary Americans to have safer and better lives, we need to tie Moscow Mitch, and his filthy corrupt wife Elaine Chao, to every step of the impeachment inquiry of Donald Trump, so that as many Americans as possible can know that Mitch McConnell is every bit as corrupt and vile as Donald Trump.

McConnell has supported Trump at America's expense every step of the way, and he needs to be held accountable for his despicable actions.

For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap

Et tu, Catholic Church?
In light of racism shown by its students from Covington Catholic High School (Kentucky--who would have ever guessed?) as they chanted "Go back to the reservation" and threatened Native American Vietnam War Veteran Nathan Phillips while wearing their MAGA hats, the Catholic Conference of Kentucky issued the following:
We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students toward Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general, Jan. 18 after the March for Life, in Washington, D.C.  We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church's teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.
As usual, this is complete and utter horseshit from the Catholic Church.

Under Pope John Paul II, the Catholic Church sold its soul to the republican party in America in return for its anti-abortion and homophobic policies that align perfectly with Catholic Church doctrine.  That the republican party was also the party of racism was conveniently ignored (name one fucking prominent Catholic who has said word one about the party's history of disenfranchising people of color or Trump's blatant racism).  Now that the Church has been once again made to look like the hateful religion that it is, they've suddenly had a come to Jesus moment?

Go fuck yourselves--this is the deal with the devil the Church made and now it can watch even more of its disciples flee and its piety made a mockery of.  It will be richly deserved.

And once again (see also, Rome, Hitler, Mussolini, Sex Abuse) the Catholic Church is on the wrong side of history.

Here's hoping eventually the pimple on the butt of humanity that is the Catholic Church will be popped and the world can begin to heal from the misery it has wrought.
