Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDIII--Supertramp: Goodbye Stranger

Alas, both of my loyal readers, but this is not a Friday Night Jukebox post at last actually posting on a Friday...but rather one that's a week late.  Time and tide, friends, time and tide....

My fun story intro this week involves my oldest son, who a number of years ago went on a tirade about how bad this week's featured band was...and at the time, I had no idea he even knew who they were (it'd been twenty years, give or take, since their heyday) let alone despise them.  Not to scare my two loyal readers off, but my younger brother thinks they suck, too....

Supertramp formed in London in 1969 (for whatever reason, I thought they were Australian until I did this week's half-assed research).  Their first couple of albums received neither critical nor commercial success, but they persevered, and their third album yielded a couple of hit songs and sent them on their way.  By the end of the seventies, they had achieved superstar status, but the disparate personalities and musical tastes of founding members and chief songwriters Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies led to Hodgson leaving.  The band would go on to have a few more hits but disbanded in 1988.  They have regrouped three times since (always sans Hodgson) but have not performed together since 2015.  For their career, Supertramp sold over sixty million records, releasing eleven studio albums with three hitting the top ten in their native U.K., and two here in the States (including a number one).  They also had a live album hit the top ten in both the U.K. and the U.S.  The band also released 28 singles, which somewhat oddly, overall did much better in America.

Fun Fact:  For whatever reason, Canadians really took a shine to Supertramp, with two of their albums reaching diamond (10x platinum), and Canada was also home to the only two number one singles of their career.

"Goodbye Stranger" was the third single released from Supertramp's career making album, Breakfast in America.  The single would reach #15 on the Billboard Hot 100, but only #57 on the U.K. Singles chart. The album was their only number one in America, and their highest charting in the U.K., peaking at #3.

Every now and again a band that usually wouldn't be your cup of tea comes along with a song (or in Supertramp's case for me, three) that catches your fancy, and you find yourself singing it again and again during your weekly research forty some odd years down the road even though every time you do you think to yourself, "What the hell?"  There's a busyness to "Goodbye Stranger" that I really like, especially the way Davies baritone in the stanzas juxtaposes with Hodgson's falsetto in the chorus or the bing bong of the piano--which almost sounds like church bells--at the beginning.  Hodgson also has a wicked guitar solo at the end just to put a cherry on top.  In all honesty, Supertramp is like many of the vanilla pudding bands the late seventies produced (Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon to name a few), but for some goofy ass reason this week's tune just resonated with me where others did not, and so it takes its place in the annals that are Friday Night Jukebox.

Lyric Sheet:  "Now some they do and some they don't/And some you just can't tell/And some they will and some they won't/And some it's just as well..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDII--Billy Swan: I Can Help

Ooh, here's a surprise--another one hit wonder from the seventies, the era which just happened to mark my musical coming of age.  Who'd have ever guessed?

Billy Swan was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri in 1942.  He learned guitar, drums, and piano and began writing songs as a child.  At the ripe old age of 20 he wrote his first hit, a song called "Lover Please" which became a #7 hit for the legendary Clyde McPhatter.  Swan spent a few years writing hits for other country artists, producing records, and playing bass guitar for Kris Kristofferson before signing a deal for a solo career in 1972.  He'd have one big hit (which, amazingly enough, just happens to be this week's featured tune) ...and as is often the case here on Friday Night Jukebox, he was able to turn it into a lifetime of making music.  For his career, Swan has released 12 albums and 46 singles, with the bulk of his successful releases appearing on the Country charts.  Since 2005 he has been mostly a backing singer and studio musician.

"I Can Help" was the first single released from his second album, the astutely titled I Can HelpThe single would hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the Country singles chart.  The album would reach #21 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Country albums chart.  Surprisingly enough for a one hit wonder, those were the only #1 hits--actually hits of any sort on the pop charts--of his career.

Fun Fact:  "I Can Help" was number one on the singles charts in 13 different countries.  Man, if you're going to have one hit, that's the way to do it.

As I've noted a time or two before, every now and again there's a confluence of musical events that lead to a great song, and "I Can Help" is just one more instance.  From the opening rockabilly influenced guitars to the frat rock inspired organ, from the beneficent lyrics to Swan's blue-eyed soul vocals, everything comes together to form one country-tinged pop gem.  And the cherries on top?  Hand claps galore and a false ending!  Just another fine addition to the pantheon of tunes here on Friday Night Jukebox.

Lyric Sheet:  "It's a fact that people get lonely/Ain't nothing new/But a woman like you, baby/Should never have the blues..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDI--Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody

My weekly half-assed research usually involves reading the Wikipedia entries for that week's artist, that week's song, and the album it came from--in addition to listening to said tune several times over.  All told it generally takes a half hour to forty-five minutes, depending on whether a particular week's artist has an epic history.  But this week--hoo-boy, let me tell you--it's only a slight exaggeration to say that there are people who did less research on their dissertation....

Since their inception in 1970, there have been so many articles and books written about Queen by writers much better than me that there's really little use in trying to recap their prodigious history.  While I am not among those who believe they belong in the upper echelon of rock and roll superstars, there are plenty of folks more knowledgeable than I who can point to over 250 million records sold, numerous highly successful world tours, their making the music video that literally paved the way for MTV, their historic appearance at Live Aid in 1984, and their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as proof they belong.  For their career, Queen has released 15 albums (with seven number one LP's in their native U.K. compared to one here in the States, a reflection of their greater popularity in their homeland), and 72 singles I (with four #1's U.K. Singles Charts, and three here in America).  Despite the passing of legendary frontman Freddie Mercury in 1991, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor (bassist John Deacon retired in 1997) continue to record and tour as Queen + (Insert Singer Here) with different lead singers and fans across the world have helped them to remain a very successful band.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" (much to the chagrin of their record company) was the first single released from what many believe to be their best album, A Night at the OperaThe song would reach #1 in the U.K. and #9 in the U.S. on its initial release; it would hit #1 a second time in Great Britain after the death of Freddie Mercury, and #2 in the U.S. after its being featured in the movie Wayne's World (gee, I wonder whose priorities are just a touch fucked up....).  The album was #1 in the U.K. and #4 in America.

Fun Fact:  The music video for "Bohemian Rhapsody" has over 1.5 billion views on YouTube, and it is the oldest song to have over a billion views.

I was sixteen when "Bohemian Rhapsody" was released, and it was unlike any song that had come before it, and forty-three years later it's unlike any song that has come since.  It had only been a little more than a year since rock and roll had begun its procession into my bones, and the wonder with which I listened to it every time it came on the radio (or the rare occasions when I could watch the then unheard-of music video on television) was the wonder of the world when the sun first comes up each morning.  There have been many days--and many wonderful songs that have also left me awestruck--since then, and through them all "Bohemian Rhapsody" remains one of rock and roll's truly magical moments.

Lyric Sheet:  "Is this the real life?/Is this just fantasy?/Caught in a landslide/No escape from reality..."
