In 2004, voters in Michigan voted overwhelmingly (58% -42%) to ban same sex marriage and civil unions.
Today, a federal judge ruled Michigan's same sex marriage ban unconstitutional, making Michigan the 18th state to legalize gay marriage (almost halfway there).
Not content with wasting $7 million dollars a day because they delayed implementation of Obamacare to score political points, republicans, through AG Bill Schuette, will appeal the ruling so they can waste even more of Michiganders' hard earned money to earn even more political points with the fringe of their party. This despite the fact that polls now show a solid majority of Michiganders (56%) favor gay marriage.
I note this because I was one of the 42% ten years ago who voted against the ban to same sex marriage. I'm not looking for a pat on the back--I just want to remind people that societal change takes time, and that eventually, the right thing to do will win out.
It happened today in Michigan.

Turnabout is fair play
Well, well, well--seems the gay haters have realized they're fighting a losing battle, and are changing their tactics to focus on the gays being a threat to their religious liberty, and therefore, they should still be able to discriminate against the LGBT community.
Believe it or not, I actually have no problem with this tactic...as long as it's a two-way street. There are many religious demoninations that support gay rights--shouldn't those who practice these faiths be able to discriminate against the gay haters in support of their religious liberty?
I work in retail--it'd be all kinds of fun to have a litmus test for those whose views run contrary to mine. Excuse me, sir, but how do you feel about abortion? The death penalty? Raising the minimum wage?
It would never happen, but you have to admit there would be some real enjoyment in watching some old white idiot go apoplectic when he doesn't get his Quarter Pounder with Cheese because he's hating on the gays.

So's your old man
In its never ending quest to see how many American parishioners it can turn away, the Catholic Church, through the archbishop of Detroit, announced recently that Catholics who support gay marriage should no longer receive communion.
Which calls to mind the kid, who when he saw he wasn't going to win the game, took his ball and went home.
When all was said and done, the kid lost a lot of friends, and one supposes, eventually the Church is going to lose a lot of American Catholics, too.
Because being on the wrong side of history is a lot more important to the Church than saving souls.

Twenty-five reasons to vote for Obama: #21--LGBT Issues
Keep it simple stupid....
President Obama overturned "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
The Obama administration stopped the Solicitor General from defending the Defense of Marriage Act.
President Obama is the first sitting President to come out in favor of marriage equality.
For the first time in our history, a majority of the American people are in favor of marriage equality. Do we really want to hand the Presidency to a man who will be beholden to a party that thinks the word "faggot" is an acceptable way to describe Gay and Lesbian Americans?
Fuck no, we don't.

Handbags and gladrags
Ends and odds...
God I Hope Not, Dept.: You can't see it in this link, but in the print edition the subtitle to the article states, "Employers like flexibility, lower pay rates; workers happy to have a paycheck." Apparently, contract jobs are a real growth industry--and what's not to like, other than everything, about lower pay rates (usually 10% less) and less job security? And as long as we're just "happy to have a paycheck" I'm sure the downward spiral will continue.
Sun Can't Shine on the Same Dog's Ass Everyday, Dept.: Every now and again, Old Nolan gets one right. For those not in the know, Mark Brewer is the chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party--the chairman who lead Michigan Democrats to historic defeats this past fall. Unfortunately, thanks to a party in disarray, Brewer is about to be re-elected to his post so he can lead us to further humiliating defeats in 2012. Unlike republicans, who canned Michael Steele despite historic victories this past fall because they rightly viewed him as a liability, the Democrats once again bow to chickenshit and saddle us with a radical republican government for years to come. Note to the Michigan Democratic Party: the check, so to speak, is in the mail (i.e., don't call us, we'll call you).
Be Careful What You Wish, Dept.: Sorry, but I can't work up a lot of sympathy for the News' complaint about the Civil Service Commission recent decision to extend state workers' benefits to a roommate as a way around specifically designating benefits for a domestic partner because Michigan can't "afford" it. The Defense of Marriage Act wasn't enough--the bigots had to take away benefits for domestic partners, too. And sometimes, those fighting for fairness have to take matters into their own hands, much like Harry Truman did when he integrated the military in 1948. My guess is, had they left well enough alone, the citizens of Michigan would only be paying for domestic partners--now we get to pay for boyfriends, girlfriends, and just about anyone else a state worker can get under their roof. At least it's for a good cause....
It's a Fucking Car, Dept.: My absolute least favorite commercial these days is the one in which we're lead to believe you'll never forget your first Subaru, and your love of a woman is a distant second. CUE WRONG ANSWER BUZZER! A car is a fucking piece of moving metal; a good woman is a marvel and a treasure. And for the record, there's no beer on this planet that's as good as a good woman, either.
Say It Ain't So, Dept.: While I can't say I'm surprised, the White Stripes, it was announced this week, have called it a career. One of my favorite bands of the last few years, always intriguing, great tunes, a band that makes Michiganders not have to be completely embarrassed by Kid Rock and Ted Nugent (okay, okay--Bob Seger, Motown, and Eminem do the same)...but the thing I'll always remember about them, is that shortly after my cooler than cool daughter introduced me to them with a copy of White Blood Cells, in which I fell in love with a song called, "Fell in Love With a Girl," I actually fell in love with a (beautiful) girl, and she's still mine. Good times....

emaycee
