Believe him

Donald Trump's idea of losers
Maya Angelou once said that when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.

Remember when Trump was running for President and said that people who get captured in war (specifically John McCain) aren't heroes?  Then news today that Donald Trump referred to American Marines who gave their lives in the first World War now buried at Aisne-Marne as losers shouldn't surprise you.  Nor should news that he said soldiers buried in Arlington were suckers.  Or that he didn't want amputee war vets on a stage with him because he said no one wants to see that.

You know what's most amazing about what Trump said?  The fact that I am in no way shocked.    Disgusted and nauseated, you bet.  Angry and bewildered, yes sir.  But not shocked.  Because this is who Donald Trump is and always has been.

And why there is no way America survives another four years of this psychopath in the White House.

Big mistake...huge!

War hero this, mother fucker:  NO!

Of all the colossal mistakes in U.S. political history, I'm pretty sure that when all is said and done this one will rank in the top ten--Donald Trump speaking of John McCain, July 2015:

"He's not a war hero.  He was a war hero because he was captured.  I like people who weren't captured."

You have to wonder if those words were echoing through John McCain's thoughts as he cast the decisive no vote on Skinny repeal ending Donald Trump's last best chance (for now) to destroy Obamacare.

It had to feel awfully sweet--I'm sure Sen. McCain didn't spend five years fighting for his life while being tortured at the Hanoi Hilton to have his character questioned by an orange clown whose idea of torture is his not being able to cheat at golf.

Sssssss.....

Pop! Pop! Pop!

And that sound you hear is the sound of millions of Democratic bubbles bursting...

Keeping in mind that I'm the guy who predicted Sarah Palin would be the republican Presidential nominee in 2012, and that Hillary Clinton was going to win in a rout, it's hard to see how Donald Trump's speech to Congress last night isn't anything but bad news for Democrats.  Coming on the heels of the uninspired choice of Tom Perez to head the DNC (yes, he's better than Wasserman-
Schulz, but he's not the candidate who is going to fire up the young folks that we're going to so desperately need in 2018 and 2020), Trump seems to have figured out what Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, John McCain, Charles Grassley, and numerous other republicans have known for some time:  you can say the craziest shit imaginable as long as while you're doing it you don't come across as an insane, hateful asshole.  Now it remains to be seen if Trump is capable of doing it consistently, but I'll be mighty surprised if his approval ratings don't improve and Democrats do their usual backpedaling and sell us out as they've done so many times before.

Trump's selling the same bullshit ideas as he had the day before, but as long as he looks rational doing it, the media and most Americans are going to shrug their shoulders and move on.

STFU

In the 2008 Presidential election, American voters resoundingly rejected John McCain as their choice for our next President.  The only states McCain carried were the ones that would vote for the banjo playing kid in the movie Deliverance as long as he had an "R" next to his name.

None of that, however, has stopped McCain--who never met an American soldier he didn't want to get killed in a useless war--from criticizing President Obama at every turn, for every decision he's ever made concerning foreign policy.  And he does this despite the fact that President Obama has proved right in virtually every one of them.

Seems now McCain has his panties in a twist because President Obama is using "grudging incrementalism" in the fight against ISIS.  Apparently increasing the number of troops to a little over 4000 is going to lead to end of America as we know it.

(Roll eyes here,)

No, it isn't.  ISIS is not the Nazi war machine from WWII, it's not the Soviet Union of old, it's not China as we know it today, and would probably have a real battle on its hands with the rugged army of Luxembourg.  Yes, they've committed several terrorist attacks which are tragic and should be fought at every turn, but ISIS is not going to takeover America, not going to change our way of life, and is not going to take all of our women and children into slavery.

It is little more than a pimple on America's butt.

Listen, you wouldn't mortgage your family's future for a pimple on your butt, and you certainly wouldn't risk your kids lives for it.  You'd wait out the discomfort and use a little preventive medicine  until it eventually goes away of its own volition.

And America should handle ISIS in the same way.

And the last thing we need is idiots like McCain screaming to spend more money and waste more American lives on a big nothing.

Day old bread

Aged and tired Senators John McCain of Arizona and Chuck Grassley of Iowa were in the news (yawn...) again this week.  McCain made the bold claim that based on republican primary turnout they won't need Latino voters in 2016 to win elections (bullshit, but please keep believing it), and Grassley for whining that he (deservedly) might well lose in his umpteenth re-election bid this November thanks to his utter incompetence as the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committe, fiddle farting around while the Supreme Court opening left by Antonin Scalia's death remains vacant.  If America wants two faces to best describe everything that's wrong with Congress, I can't think of two better ones than McCain and Grassley.  McCain hasn't met an American soldier he wouldn't gladly send off to be killed in another pointless war, and Grassley has been republicans' best lap dog, following the orders of lightweights like Mitch McConnell and John Boehner for so long now that it's impossible to believe he's capable of thinking for himself.

It's hard to think of two Senators who have spent the amount of time these two have in the Senate (thirty years for McCain and thirty-six for Grassley) and have accomplished less.  McCain seems to get by because he's a war hero (plenty of war heroes in America who have not sucked on the public teat for thirty years and have actually accomplished something other than getting re-elected).  Grassley, on the other hand, is famed for visiting each of Iowa's ninety-nine counties each year (and this accomplishes for the American people exactly what?).

While it's unlikely, there is nothing better the voters of Arizona and Iowa could do this November than send these two into permanent retirement.  Stale, indolent, and inert are not what the American people need from their representatives in Washington, and at this juncture that's pretty much all we're getting from McCain and Grassley.

Yuuuuge

For all of our hand wringing over republican obstructionism concerning President Obama's upcoming nomination of a new Supreme Court justice, I truly believe that eventually it will be considered one of the biggest political blunders in American political history.

For one, as the republican party implodes it's looking more and more like we're going to have a Democratic administration come January 2017.  Anyone who thinks Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders is going to appease republicans with a moderate candidate (as President Obama perhaps might if republicans would meet him halfway) is absolutely kidding themselves.  I'm guessing we're talking someone in the mold of Ruth Bader Ginsburg when Clinton or Sanders make their choice to replace Scalia.

Second, the American people have an innate sense of fairness, and very few of them--even republican voters--aren't seeing through the republican bullshit.  Barack Obama was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2012 and he serves through January 2017 and most Americans believe the choice for the next Supreme Court Justice is and rightfully should be his.

This may well have a huge impact on who controls the Senate come next year--republican Senators are taking a beating over their obstructionism and even republican Senate stalwarts like John McCain and Chuck Grassley have seen their approval numbers plummet.  While I doubt either McCain or Grassley will find themselves unemployed next January both could easily lose the crossover Democratic voters they usually garner which would make their races considerably tighter--and the tighter the races the more money republicans are going to have to spend on Senate campaigns that could have been won easily.  And that means less money for Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Florida, New Hampshire, and Illinois--races where Democrats are probably even money (if not better) to win.

And that's before Democratic Senate candidates start hammering their opponents with ads over their Supreme Court obstructionism.

Mark my words:  republicans will long rue the day they took this track.

Huckleberry finished

South Carolina's senior Senator, Lindsay Graham, called it quits today in his pretty much pointless quest to be the republican nominee for President in 2016.  Graham was the only republican candidate who acknowledged climate change, was in favor of immigration reform, and had the courage to call out Donald Trump.  He never had a chance.

He also belongs to the John McCain wing of hawkishness on foreign policy, i.e. let's fucking bomb everybody.

While many on the left are lamenting his loss as the one republican candidate who wasn't abhorrent (Pataki and Gilmore could also fall into this category, but no one knows who they are and therefore no one cares one way or the other), the most important takeaway from Graham's withdrawal is that last rites have been given to moderate republicans.  Graham never got much above 1% in republican polls, and its hard to imagine any moderate having any degree of success going forward on a national level.

The inmates are now in complete control of the asylum.

Base comments

In a shocking turn, Donald Trump made headlines again this weekend with his controversial comment concerning John McCain not being a war hero because he was captured.

Let's leave aside the facts that a) it's Donald Trump, for Christ's sake, and b) any republican acting outraged is guilty of of rank hypocrisy in light of their band-aid stunt with regard to John Kerry's war record at their 2004 convention (one of the most heinous acts I've seen republicans commit, and that's really saying something because they specialize in heinous acts), Trump's comments concerning McCain's war record are his modus operandi thus far in the campaign.  He is only trying to appeal to the republican base, and the republican base absolutely hates John McCain.  McCain is and always has been a moderate on immigration, his name is front and center in the McCain-Feingold Act, which tried to reform campaign finance back in the days before Citizen's United made corporations into people, and worst of all his half-assed campaign put the black guy in the White House.

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if his poll numbers went up in lieu of these comments.  It's not enough for republicans to have their party members just be republicans--you have to be a racist, human hating, corporation loving, science hating imbecile or you're just not good enough to be one of them.

Huckleberry's in, too

And then there were nine....

A couple of interesting factoids about Lindsey Graham, who yesterday became the ninth republican to hop on the Bozo Bus that is the republican race for the Presidency:

  • He's the only republican in the race who believes climate change is real and caused by humans--and that will pretty much tell you his chances of getting the party's nomination:  zero.
  • He has a compelling personal narrative:  orphaned at 21, he raised his then 12 year old sister and still managed to get through college and law school, as well as serve in the Air Force.  Also unlike many republicans, Graham does not claim to be a self-made man--he actually acknowledges that he had a lot of help getting to where he is today.
  • I have no idea why he's called "Huckleberry" by his detractors--after about a ten minute google search I gave up.  I can only assume it's because he bears a striking resemblance to the old cartoon character Huckleberry Hound....
And the interesting parts pretty much end there.  Graham belongs to the republican triumvirate with John McCain and Kelly Ayotte who think the average American actually gives a shit about foreign policy and thinks it's a good idea to send in American troops anytime there's a crisis so they can get killed for a whole hell of a lot of nothing (his campaign will pretty much be McCain in 2008, Part II, and we know how well the original one worked out).  He's pretty much in line with the love old rich white men and hate the gays camp in the republican party.

Outside of seeing how much crazy he drag out of his competitors when it comes to foreign policy over the next few months (pretty much the sole reason for his run), the Graham campaign will be done by the end of the Iowa caucus.

And to think we still have eight to ten more republicans to go....

The republican deb-iraq-cle

While republicans take their completely oblivious potshots at President Obama over the deteriorating situation in Iraq, it's important to remember who created this mess.

Republicans.

Yep, from the get go republications were undeniably wrong about everything in Iraq.  But that hasn't stopped John McCain (McCain must be Scottish for "moronic asshole") from bitching about the events transpiring today (though he did take a colossal bitch slap from Chris Hayes).  Willard Romney, the noted foreign policy expert after serving one term as Massachussetts Governor and also getting his ass kicked by President Obama in 2012 (i.e., he's the Man Who Would Not Be President, Thank God), is taking the opportunity to bash Hillary Clinton and say Obama's foreign policy has been a failure (pretty much expected from a half-wit).  They're even recycling republican trolls like David Brooks (has learned nothing over the past eleven years) and Judith Miller (has there ever been a journalist who was more incompetent on an issue than Miller was on Iraq?).

Fortunately, President Obama has been prescient from the beginning on Iraq, and yesterday noted that we will not be committing more troops to the debacle that republicans created.  Frankly, I wish we'd just walk away--Iraq has been a monumental disaster in American lives and American capital and the ills it produced have not been worth it from the moment we were lied into it until this day.

One thing you can be sure of--when republicans are on TV tomorrow blaming President Obama for their mistakes, if good foreign policy was to jump out of their collective asses and yell "Howdy-doo!" they still wouldn't know what the fuck it was.

A friend with weed

Well, lookee here--seems John McCain is beginning to wonder if maybe it's time to consider legalizing the use of marijuana.

You know the War on Drugs' days are numbered when a white guy who's old enough to have starred in "Reefer Madness" is beginning to question whether or not we should be legalizing hemp.  Frankly, we've wasted a lot of time, effort, money and lives to have put absolutely no dent whatsoever in either the sales or usage of pot.

McCain's right (for once in his life)--it's time to end the charade and collect the billions in taxes that we're missing out on with a pointless crusade.

Quick questions

I know it's Fox News, but what on earth possessed them to interview failed republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney (airing this Sunday--I'm on pins and fucking needles) considering he will go down in history as one of the worst Presidential candidates ever, blew an imminently winnable Presidential election, and in doing so, absolutely got his ass handed to him?  I understand John McCain getting his airtime--he's a sitting U.S. Senator.  But Willard?  He doesn't hold any elected office (and never will again), and isn't even one of the party's good old boys.  Do they really think anyone cares what an irrelevant political poser thinks, especially one who was so soundly rejected by American voters?  Are they really that hard up for people who can slam the President?

Inquiring mind wants to know....

Mr. Irrelevant

Watching John McCain's performance during today's confirmation hearings for President Obama's next Secreatry of Defense, the second thing I thought was how far his reputation has fallen.  From war-hero, maverick Senator, to irrelevant, bitter old man.  McCain wants to argue over whether the Iraq War was some sort of success for America?  Fucking really?  For fuck's sake, no one gave a shit four years ago and no one gives a shit now.  The Iaq War was an unmitigated disaster and no amount of whining from John McCain is going to change it.

By the way, the first thought I had while watching McCain today, was "Thank fucking God Obama lambasted his ass four years ago so we didn't get stuck with our second straight numbnuts for President."

Red meat

I completely agree with Digby on the nature of this tweet--it's heinous, that the Heritage foundation would find its author worthy of an award is inhumane...and I'd bet a dollar to a doughnut that it did more to fire up the republican base than a thousand pieces by Digby whining about it does to fire up ours.

David Atkins makes a nice point--in a much nicer way than I do--that we are not normal, and that most voters do not share our passion or knowledge.  He also notes that we need to trust the polls--I learned my lesson in 2010, when several of the sites I frequent were trying to make the case that the elections might not be as bad as the polls showed.  They weren't--they were a lot fucking worse.  And that's why a few days out I boldly stated that Walker was going to win easily--the polls were not in our favor and they weren't going to be.  And like Atkins notes, we may have wasted a lot of time and effort on a lost cause.

I'm not picking on Digby--I admire her greatly and am thrilled that she's on our side.  But she's not alone in this wing, or subsect, of Liberals who think we're going to point out how odious republicans are and it's going to win us support.  George W. Bush was a horrendous human being, but the only reason Barack Obama won in 2008 was because the economy collapsed before our very eyes (we tend to forget that when Lehmann Brothers collapsed, McCain was ahead in the polls) and McCain reacted like a scared school girl.

Example:  "Romney's time at Bain shows that he'd cut his wife's heart out with a scissors to make a buck."  Truth be told, it has no more truth to it than the numbnuts above tweet about Sandra Fluke.  But it's an image that will remain, rightly or wrongly, in voters minds.

Republicans accepted long ago that like Vince Lombardi said, "Winning isn't everything.  It's the only thing."  We'd be wise to follow suit--righteous indignation won't put food on the table.

Whining wimps and blithering babies--Danger ahead edition

I don't care for my congressman (Mike Rogers-R-MI). I disagreed with him vociferously while he was rubber stamping the disastrous Bush the Lesser agenda. He's little more than a Republican toadie, a seasoned liar, and his mind knows independence like mine knows cold fusion (i.e., zip, zero, nada). I wrote him letters expressing my disappointment with his votes. I've voted proudly against him twice. Never, though, never did I think that throwing a brick through his office window or threatening the lives of his children was a valid option. Silly me--apparently this is appropriate behavior for "patriots." For the rest of us, though, I'm certain it would be viewed as terrorism. Along that same line, the Republicans passed many bills during the Bush the Lesser years (tax cuts for the wealthy, the credit card bill, Iraq war resolution, the Medicare prescription plan that was little more than a giveaway to the pharmaceutical industry) that I vehemently opposed--**Aside--good day for big words beginning with the letter "v"**--but never, repeat, never did I think that somehow they had cheated to pass their agenda. Yes, I was unhappy, yes, I think they made our country worse off, but the truth of the matter is they won majorities in the House and Senate, won the Presidency, and therefore had the right to pass their agenda. And I had the right to write letters to the editor, donate to Democratic candidates, and work for defeating those majorities (2006--YES!! 2008--YES, AGAIN!!). One would think that now that Healthcare reform has passed (nyah, nyah--fuck you Tea Partiers) and the Republicans are perilously close to the political wilderness again (once the majority of the American people see what this bill does, they're going to like it--though it does have its faults--and vote for the party of go over the party of no) they would at least attempt to be good losers and give themselves a chance with socially liberal/fiscally conservative independents. Nope--why suck it up like an adult when you can throw a tantrum like a child. Is there a more pathetic politican these days than John McCain? And, thank you, Vice President Biden, your enthusiasm is warranted: this is a "...big fucking deal!" Peace, emaycee
