After Donald Trump went on another of his crazed rants, this time saying even more horrible things about Alicia Machado, the former Miss Universe that Trump once called Miss Piggy, there was another huge surge in Latino voter registration searches... and when you consider that Latinos vote Democratic 70% of the time, and that 93% of voters vote for the same party as they voted for in their first election for the rest of their lives, and that 80,000 Latino Americans turn 18 every month, you don't have to be an M.I.T. grad to do the math.

You know, when this election is over Democrats are going to owe Donald Trump a huge thank you--by the time all is said and done, he is going to put us in the driver's seat electorally for at least a generation.

Day old bread

Aged and tired Senators John McCain of Arizona and Chuck Grassley of Iowa were in the news (yawn...) again this week.  McCain made the bold claim that based on republican primary turnout they won't need Latino voters in 2016 to win elections (bullshit, but please keep believing it), and Grassley for whining that he (deservedly) might well lose in his umpteenth re-election bid this November thanks to his utter incompetence as the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committe, fiddle farting around while the Supreme Court opening left by Antonin Scalia's death remains vacant.  If America wants two faces to best describe everything that's wrong with Congress, I can't think of two better ones than McCain and Grassley.  McCain hasn't met an American soldier he wouldn't gladly send off to be killed in another pointless war, and Grassley has been republicans' best lap dog, following the orders of lightweights like Mitch McConnell and John Boehner for so long now that it's impossible to believe he's capable of thinking for himself.

It's hard to think of two Senators who have spent the amount of time these two have in the Senate (thirty years for McCain and thirty-six for Grassley) and have accomplished less.  McCain seems to get by because he's a war hero (plenty of war heroes in America who have not sucked on the public teat for thirty years and have actually accomplished something other than getting re-elected).  Grassley, on the other hand, is famed for visiting each of Iowa's ninety-nine counties each year (and this accomplishes for the American people exactly what?).

While it's unlikely, there is nothing better the voters of Arizona and Iowa could do this November than send these two into permanent retirement.  Stale, indolent, and inert are not what the American people need from their representatives in Washington, and at this juncture that's pretty much all we're getting from McCain and Grassley.

Two things they weren't discussing at CPAC

Wonder why they didn't have any panel discussions at this year's C-CRAP convention concerning....

The fact that as of right now, if Hillary Clinton decides to run for President in 2016, republicans may not see the White House until 2024, by which time Texas might well be blue, in which case, I may go the rest of my life without seeing a republican in the White House (oh, please make it so, Miss Hillary!).  Kudos, though, to Mitch McConnell, for comparing a Hillary campaign in 2016 to a rerun of The Golden Girls.  Because nothing garners the female vote like making fun of women for being older.  Do you suppose potential staffers for a Hillary Clinton Presidential campaign in 2016 and an Ashley Judd Senate campaign against Dolt McConnell in 2014 were drooling over that comment being on an endless loop during their possible campaigns?  I know I would be.

The second is that each and every month 100,000 seniors (60% of whom vote republican) die, and 67,000 Latinos (70% of whom vote Democratic) turn 18.  Those are some seriously ugly demographics for republicans, and unless they can figure out a way to a) keep people from being born, and b) keep people from dying (and good luck with both of those) there doesn't seem to be a lot of hope for the future of the party.

Needless to say, emaycee won't be throwing any pity parties for republicans anytime soon.

Los ninos estan bien

While the past year had a lot of good--President Obama's decisive victory in the Presidential Election, winning a bigger majority in the Senate, picking up seats in the U.S. House--it also had a lot of bad:  the Scott Walker fiasco in Wisconsin, the continuing war on workers, the continuing war on women, the ever growing gap between rich and poor, republican obstructionism, lots of losses at the state and local levels.

But to paraphrase the Glimmer Twins, time is on our side.

The best news from 2012 was the continued and growing support of young people and Latinos for the Democratic Party.  People between the ages of 18-29 went for President Obama 60% to 36%.  Between the ages of 30-39 it was 60% to 38%.  The majority of these voters will be Democrats for life.

The Latino vote was even better, as the President won 71% to 27% (improving on his 67-31 margin in '08).  Coupled with the ever growing Latino population in the U.S. (50,000 Hispanic-Americans turn 18 every day), it's only a matter of time before the Democratic Party has an overwhelming electoral college majority (and given the propensity of people to vote a straight ticket, this helps downballot as well).  There are those who believe Texas will be as blue as California by 2030...at which point the Democrats could hold the White House much like republicans did in the aftermath of the Civil War (44 of 52 years between 1860 and 1912).

Modern Democrats are often slow to to latch onto populist principles and live up to the principles and potential on which the current Democratic Party was founded.  Here's hoping the young folks and the Latinos currently driving them to victory can drag the party kicking and screaming into the Progressive fold, striving for an America that truly benefits us all.

That will be a beauty to behold, and is why the future for us Liberals is bright, bright, bright.
