Once again, the Catholic Church chooses Nazism over the Golden Rule

I've often felt that the three organizations that have done the most damage to ordinary Americans are the republican party, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Catholic Church.  Right on cue, in its never ending quest to prove me right, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops this week announced they "were looking forward to working with President-elect Trump..."

Fucking seriously?

 Though I shouldn't be surprised--it's well documented that the Catholic Church while never openly supporting Hitler or Mussolini (the Church was officially "neutral" in WWII--and a big WTF to that) turned a blind eye to fascism in ways they never did with communism.

Can someone explain to me how groping women is covered by "love thy neighbor as thyself"?  Can someone explain to me how the love of Christ is reflected in calling Mexicans rapists and drug dealers?  Can someone explain to me how hating Muslims is God's work?  Or gays? Or women?

Frankly, it's far past time to call the Catholic Church what it is--the world's most powerful hate group.

In the end, it would help to remind everyone that the Catholic Church, for all its claims to moral superiority, over the course of several decades chose its bottom line and land holdings over children who were raped by its leaders.

And that should be enough to discredit it forever.

The content of their character

Pope Francis today noted that anyone (that means you, Donald Trump) who is more interested in putting up walls than constructing bridges is not a Christian.  Trump responded by calling the Pope's comments "disgraceful' which was met with applause from his audience.

I'm not sure you could find an example that is more reflective of today's republican party--a man who is the party's leading contender for the Presidency, whose platform is one of hatred and fear, deeming a man who preaches love and hope, as disgraceful.

How exactly such a misanthrope can convince millions of Americans that he is going to make American great again is truly one of history's greatest mysteries.

Bullshit artistes

For all republicans whining about Pope Francis, the only thing that's different about his papacy over that of his predecessors is that Francis has reminded his flock that fighting for the poor, looking after immigrants, taking care of the earth, and abolishing the death penalty have always been and will continue to be every bit as much a part of the church's mission as abortion, gays, and birth control.

And for Catholic politicians such as Chris Christie and Marco Rubio to claim that they can disagree with the Pope on these issues because they are political issues is the height of hypocrisy.  To suddenly decide that your faith is an a la carte of beliefs when it doesn't suit your wealthy donors or your hateful base is a sure sign that your faith is a fraud.

Which really isn't so surprising when you consider that republicans have never had any problem ignoring Christ's admonition that "You cannot serve both God and money."

They've made a movement out of serving money.

Two more reasons...

...why it's necessary that we don't just defeat republicans, but completely annihilate them.

To wit:

• Rick Santorum commented last week that Pope Francis should leave Climate Change to scientists--conveniently ignoring the fact that he's not a scientist, either.  Santorum later compounded his idiocy by saying that because he's a politician he's more qualified to discuss it than the Pope (the Pope does have a background in science).  Unfortunately for Santorum, large donations from big oil to his campaign doesn't make him anymore an expert than the Pope.
• South Dakota Senator John Thune today tweeted that President Obama should acknowledge that Obamacare is bad for the American people because six million Americans could lose their subsidies because of the upcoming Supreme Court decision concerning King v. Burwell, a lawsuit brought by republicans to continue their assault on America's poor.  This is akin to robbing a bank and later claiming you're not guilty because you lost the money.  Poetic justice?  Thune has been thoroughly ridiculed for his tweet.

Santorum and Thune are either incredibly stupid or lying through their teeth.  Their comments are endemic to today's republican party and either way, it should absolutely disqualify them from governing the American people.

Let's get this party started

In light of Pope Francis' remarks that the Bible (Luke 19:1-10) endorses wealth redistribution, I was just wondering when our friends on the Christian right were going to hop on board and join us in our cause for reducing income inequality in America.

I mean, they sure seem to take everything else in the Bible literally--though I'm not sure most of them could spell hypocrisy let alone acknowledge its existence in their values.

Kudos to the Catholic Church, which today canonized John Paul II, making him the first "saint" to currently be rotting in hell.

John Paul II is best known for presiding over the Church's sex abuse scandals which he tried to sweep under the rug as an American problem (what the fuck?) to protect the Church's financial assets and therefore allowed the rape of children by the Church's leadership to continue unabated.  John Paul II was also so anti-abortion and anti-gay that he pushed the church toward political conservatives, thus doing his part to ensure that the living (that would be the rest of us) would suffer at the hands of rampant income inequality and unheralded greed (for starters).  Starving children and extreme poverty?  Fuck that--there's gays in them thar hills!

On the bright side, the mass of humanity now has a much better chance of being canonized--let's face it, the Church has set the bar for entry into sainthood pretty fucking low.

Heaven's not for sale

"And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."  Matthew 19:24

This is one of those passages in the Bible that conservatives, who take most of the Bible quite literally, will say Jesus didn't mean quite literally, that it's one of the few passages in the Bible that has nuances.

Yeah, good luck with that at the Pearly Gates.

Anyway, Ken Langone, the billionaire founder of Home Depot, has had his little feelings hurt by the Pope's (spot on) comments on capitalism.  Seems Mr. Langone is trying to raise $180 million for the restoration of St. Patrick's Church in New York City, and one of his potential donors is having second throughts because Pope Francis has criticized the abject failure of our economic system.

Do you suppose God, the supposed father of us all, is more concerned with the restoration of a church or the fact that, in the richest nation on earth, one in six Americans (Including 22% of our children) lives in poverty?  Do you suppose he's more concerned with spending $180 million on a building or the fact that one in five Americans has been food insecure in the past year?

The rich don't need God--for them, he's just another commodity to be bought.  To the poor, He represents hope.

Unfortunately for Mr. Langone, there aren't any camels for sale in this world skinny enough to squeeze through the eye of the needle.

What's funny watching the kerfuffle over Pope Francis' remarks on income inequality is the reaction of Catholics.  No surprise the maggots of unfettered capitalism have declared the Pope wrong (Jon Stewart last night on Stuart Varney's reaction is classic), but it is stunning how little the more conservative Catholics know about their own religion.  The only change Pope Francis has made from Popes John Paul II and Bendict XVI is to remind Catholics that serving the poor is equally as important to the tenets of their faith as are hating on the gays and their war on women.

While I salute Pope Francis for prioritizing the economic needs of the poor and the middle class, Catholic Church doctrine is still exactly the same as it was before the puff of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel declared the election of this new Pope last March.

Of course, considering that the more conservative Catholics are wont to scream like wounded warriors over abortion and not bat an eye when some poor bastard is executed (in Church doctrine all life is sacred, and that means the death penalty is no more acceptable than abortion), it probably shouldn't be that surprising.

Wow, the Pope is Catholic!

From the apostolic exhortation:

"How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points? This is a case of exclusion. Can we continue to stand by when food is thrown away while people are starving? This is a case of inequality."

This is Pope Francis.  The leader of the Catholic Church.  He's not screaming about gays or abortion.  He's talking about something Jesus Christ actually talked about, the idea that we should help the poor.  This is the Church I remember from when I was but a wee lad, a church that actually cared about human beings and not just social issues.

While the Church has still a long way to go when it comes to who we love and the role of women in our society (and I certainly don't see myself rejoining the Church anytime soon), it's important when the leader of over one billion people speaks strongly about an issue as monumental as income inequality and actually stands up for the least among us.

If nothing else, the Pope made Rush Limbaugh shit his pants and that's always worth the price of admission.
