Law and disorder

Apparently laws only apply to Democrats

It sure was a lot of fun this past weekend to watch the party of law and order trip all over their tongues trying to whitewash the fact that Donald Trump committed a felony by using campaign funds to pay off two women he'd had an affair with--especially when you're old enough to remember republican heads exploding because Bill Clinton lied under oath about an extramarital affair.

Not nearly as fun, though, as watching them explain, the next time a prominent Democrat has a legal problem, why it's okay for Trump to break the law but not a Democrat.  Here's hoping our national media takes a lesson or two from the reformed Cowardly Lion and actually puts them on the spot.

Better yet, here's hoping that Michigan's governor-elect, Gretchen Whitmer is right, and that republicans are trading short term gain for long term pain.

I like this plan of action!

Apparently the graphic posted above is one that Trump's supporters have been sending out in lieu of the convictions of Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen, and I have to admit that I like it very much.  I really hope they do continue not caring!

Because the rest of us, well, we're going to keep right on caring about the rule of law and what it really means to be an American and not some common hoodlum.  And we're going to take that caring right into November and take back the House and the Senate.  And in two years, while they're still not busy caring, we're going to keep right on caring until we have all three branches of government and begin to once again do the work of the American people and not the pampered wealthy elite.

And then all you nitwits who supported the racist pervert can return to the land of Oblivion where you so rightfully belong.

The noose gets a little tighter

The five conservative judges on the Supreme Court today made it easier and more likely that people who have a shitload more money than folks like us can donate even larger sums than Citizen's United begat to, let's face it, mostly republican candidates.  Much hand-wringing has begun among the good guys--rightfully so--as working class America has had another impediment thrown in the path of trying to feed, clothe, house, and educate its families.

McCutcheon v. FEC  will cost Democrats some seats in Congress and the rest of us some financial security--in the short term.  If there's anything we've learned since the monied elite caused our economy to crash resulting in the Great Recession, it's that the wealthy really aren't that bright and their inflated sense of self-worth will eventually lead them astray.  The Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson threw countless millions of dolars into the 2012 elections, and exactly how well did that turn out for them?

One of two things will happen eventually--as voting demographics turn more and more our way, enough Progressives will get elected to turn the tide of the Reagan Devolution and enact campaign finance laws that will actually serve our democracy (with a left-leaning SCOTUS to back it up), or the wealthy will overplay their hand and end up a bunch of castrati, a la the French Revolution.

Either way, in the end, we win.

Bad journalism

This piece--published in the Free Press--is a picture perfect example of everything that is wrong with the Beltway media.  Seems Mr. Henry C. Jackson of the Associated Press (badly in need of a new career) did himself some serious research and reported the usual he said/she said on the virtue of laws being sought by Congress.  Both parties, according to serious journalist Jackson, are guilty of trying to pass laws only to help their guys running for President.

Nowhere in the piece does serious journalist Jackson ever offer any context.  Nowhere in the piece does serious journalist Jackson discuss the merits of the laws being sought.

Here's the horrible bills brought up by the Democrats:  full disclosure for campaign donors who make donations in excess of $10,000, ending tax breaks for corporations shipping jobs overseas, and making certain that Presidential candidates have to disclose any offshore tax havens they may possess.  How exactly these awful laws will help Mr. Obama's re-election isn't mentioned by serious journalist Jackson, because God knows that laws that help us to find out who is trying to buy our government, stop corporate welfare for companies that do not have our best national interests in their policies, and having a tax cheat for a President are all some kind of commie plots.

Here are the bills presented by the republicans as noted by serious journalist Jackson:  repeal Obamacare (yawn) and continuing the Bush tax cuts.   Because, you know, having more healthy people would be such a detriment for the country and the Bush tax cuts did so much to stimulate our economy.

We'd be much better off as a nation if the Associated Press wasn't so half-assed--and if writers like serious journalist Jackson were sent packing.
