Fucking barbarism

The Trump administration said on Friday that it would allow firing squads and readopt lethal injection as part of a broader push to revive the death penalty.

Bullshit artistes

For all republicans whining about Pope Francis, the only thing that's different about his papacy over that of his predecessors is that Francis has reminded his flock that fighting for the poor, looking after immigrants, taking care of the earth, and abolishing the death penalty have always been and will continue to be every bit as much a part of the church's mission as abortion, gays, and birth control.

And for Catholic politicians such as Chris Christie and Marco Rubio to claim that they can disagree with the Pope on these issues because they are political issues is the height of hypocrisy.  To suddenly decide that your faith is an a la carte of beliefs when it doesn't suit your wealthy donors or your hateful base is a sure sign that your faith is a fraud.

Which really isn't so surprising when you consider that republicans have never had any problem ignoring Christ's admonition that "You cannot serve both God and money."

They've made a movement out of serving money.

A snowball flies through hell

The ultra-conservative state of Nebraska today abolished the death penalty.

Let me repeat that:  the ultra conservative state of Nebraska today abolished the death penalty.

Pretty sure there's a lesson there somewhere.

Heaven from Hell

A recent study reports that more than half of all the people executed in America suffer from a mental illness.

Cruel and unusual punishment, indeed.

Originally I had planned to end the post by saying "Sometimes there are no words."  But for some reason this old proverb popped into my head:  "There but for the grace of God, go I."

On Troy Davis

Like so many, I signed countless petitions for Troy Davis.  I sent countless letters that those much more committed than I were gracious enough to compose.  I even said a Hail Mary for him while the Supreme Court was considering a stay of his execution.

It didn't matter.

And all I will take out of Troy Davis' execution this evening is an even stronger conviction that the government should remain solely a force for good, and has absolutely no business taking the life of any human being under the auspices of our very fallible legal system.

Happy Father's Day

Every now and again, one comes across a piece about an issue that shows just the right empathy for those that oppose, but stands steadfast in its principle nonetheless. The kind of piece that makes one think, "Damn, I wish I'd wrote that."

While I have to admit to being a tad biased (we do share a wee bit of the same blood) this piece by the King is one of those such pieces.

I'm proud of you, Son....
