Selling Out America Again

Aaah ... Trump is considering selling out Alaska's resources to Putin? WTAH? Every single Republican in Alaska needs to be asked about this. "Mr Trump is also considering offering Russia opportunities to tap into the valuable natural resources in the strait that separates it from the US."

Another Trump TACO to Putin this Friday!

The United States is hosting Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15. If we had a real president, he would not be coming because a real president would arrest him and send him to answer for his war crimes. I miss when we had a president who wasn't Russia's stooge. www.nbcnews.com/now/video/tr...

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. CDXXXVIII--Bearfoot: Before I Go

I've written a time or two about songs I discovered from listening to Pandora while I worked at the thrift shop, and this week's featured tune is from their folk channel.  We also have another Jukebox first, as this week's artist is the first from our 49th state, Alaska.  So in a way, this week we'll be going North...to the Future....

Bearfoot (originally Bearfoot Bluegrass) formed in Cordova, Alaska in 1999, though the members had met and began playing years earlier at a Folk Arts Camp.  They got their big break in 2001 when they won the Telluride Bluegrass band contest, and shortly thereafter released their first album.  The band eventually turned their musical skills toward Americana, went through numerous personnel changes, moved to Nashville, and after a show in Montana disbanded in 2013.  For their career they released five albums.  Bearfoot remained especially popular in their native Alaska throughout their years together, being considered "small town heroes."  They also had a devoted following thanks to featuring three female vocalists.

"Before I Go" was released in 2009 on their fourth album Doors and WindowsThe song was not released as a single, and the album did not chart.

A folk song, banjo playing, a mandolin, some fiddle, and female vocals, both lead and backing, that are as sweet and lusciously smooth as a cream pie...pretty much makes for an emaycee fave.  Written by longtime troubadour John Hiatt, "Before I Go" is an ode to life's journey, its glories and failures, its knowns and unknowns, and most of all to having a partner to share it with.  Bearfoot makes the most of its talents and takes a well-written song to heights that are heavenly serene.  And it's just the kind of song that warms the heart of an old fart folkie like me....

Lyric Sheet:  "And I will try, but I will stumble/And I will fly, he told me so/Proud and high or low and humble/Many miles before I go..."

Enjoy:

A mountain of bullshit

Republicans in Ohio are absolutely apoplectic because the White House this weekend announced that President Obama had issued an executive order changing the name of Alaska's Mount McKinley (America's tallest mountain) back to its original (and favored in the 49th state) name of Denali.

Why, you might ask, would Ohio republicans be so upset over this change?  Because the mountain was named for Ohio native and 25th President of the United States, William McKinley.  I mean, we're talking about the William McKinley, the one who had a mediocre Presidency and whose main claim to fame is that his assassination paved the way for a truly great American President, Theodore Roosevelt.

One has to wonder if the President really just wanted to punk republicans--frankly 48 other states couldn't give a shit what Alaskans choose to call the mountain, and all the Ohio republicans bitching has done is, once again, make republicans look colossally stupid.

Anchor 'em down in Anchorage

I've actually thought about this as mentioned by Darksyde of The Daily Kos earlier this week. But I'm willing to take it a step further and make all parties happier. Let's have Alaska secede from the union and let all these folks from the militia, the secessionists, and the tea-partiers move there and create their own, new country--hell, we can even pay their moving expenses.

Think about it: the state is huge, thus ample space for all. Very rugged territory, too, so plenty of space to play their war games, and without painting with too specific of a brush, plenty of hunting and fishing. The state is already significantly right wing, so everybody is on the same page (we can pay moving expenses for those no longer interested in staying--you know, the sane people--in Alaska). Since it's their country they can have their unregulated markets, carry guns like they did in the Old West, have as small of a government as they want, elect Sarah and Glenn as Prez and VP--all in all, it would be a libertarian paradise.

Even better, we could look out for them from a national defense standpoint like we do Canada--we may not always see eye to eye with our brothers up north, but let's face it, if any nation decided to pick on the Canadians, we'd open a can of whup ass on them faster than you can say "hoser." And be happy to do so. So--especially considering they'd all be armed anyway--they'd need to spend next to nothing on defense. We could work out some sweetheart deals on imports and exports (oil for citrus, fish for grain, etc.), and even loan them some start up money (with a small interest rate so as not to offend their desires for everyone to be self-reliant and self-responsible).

Granted, the cold weather might suck a bit, and getting used to that whole six months of night, six months of light oddity might take a while, but still I think it's a win-win situation. They get to live in their Lord of the Flies on steroids fantasyland, and the rest of us get to have civil debates on how to make America even greater than it already is.

And for those anal-retentives who will turn into the Rain Man without there being those fifty stars on our flag, we just give Puerto Rico statehood.

It's as simple as that...
