Breaking up is (not so hard) to do

We'd be better off without them
I've floated the idea before that eventually our differences would become too great and the United States would break up like the old Soviet Union did, but I never thought I'd see it in my lifetime.  I'd still say the odds are very slim, but one has to wonder in light of the alliances being formed by blue states to make plans to reopen their economies if this isn't being discussed in at least whispers in blue state governors' offices.

Donald Trump is completely incompetent and utterly unhinged, and that's a bad recipe for people who actually give a shit about their constituents.  And if the country falls into a depression-like economic downturn?  As long as republicans hold the White House and the Senate their constituents would likely be in deep shit.  How long before they push the eject button?

It may still not be very likely, but it's becoming increasingly possible.

Split pea soup

At a recent speaking engagement in Houston, former Colin Powell chief of staff and retired United States Army colonel Lawrence Wilkerson floated the possibility of the United States eventually breaking apart.  It's an idea I've mentioned before, though I noted I thought it would never happen because Corporate America would have too much to lose.

Still, the farther along we get I have to wonder a) are our differences just getting too great (gridlock across the country politically, utter disdain on both sides for each other)? and, b) how much longer will the citizens of blue states want to subsidize the red states (especially southern) that seem to be clueless as how to fix their myriad of problems?  Add in the fact that the Corporate America lineup changes regularly and ordinary Americans contempt for it after the Great Recession, and you have a recipe for change.

Though I don't think it will be anything I see in my lifetime, I think as time passes it's not a matter of if, but when.  Unfortunately for the red states, eventually the blue states are going to get tired of paying for their problems, and as Wilkerson noted, the south is going to end up looking like Bangladesh.

Dork away, Dixieland

Conservative author and terminal nitwit Douglas MacKinnon this week postulated that South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida should secede from the United States and form their own country named "Reagan."

Ahem.

Any way they could take Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky, too?

While I don't really support these calls for secession, (I am fully aware that roughly 40% of the populations in these states support those of us on the left and that life for the citizens of such a country would be much worse without the beneficence of the U. S. Government), we on the left sure would have a field day with the mayhem that would arise from a nation of yahoos called "Reagan."

Go away, go away, go away, Dixieland

I came across this piece by Allen Barra in which he asks if the South is dragging down the rest of the nation (short answer--and I could have told this without reading the piece--yes, yes it is).  Mr. Barra (and this companion piece by Sara Robinson which shows how we in the blue states subsidize the South with our taxes) rightly points out how nine of the ten poorest states in America are in the South, how the South receives much more in our taxes than they pay in, that illiteracy rates, poverty rates, and divorce rates are higher in the South, how their right to work laws have undermined Labor Unions and have brought wages and benefits down for the rest of America.

Mr. Barra notes a book by Chuck Thompson, Better Off Without 'Em:  A Northern Manifesto for Southern Secession, that he had read skeptically the first time and with some more enthusiasm the second.  Thanks to the numbnuts Governor of Texas, the idea of Southern Secession is being floated--but kind of interestingly, it's being floated by both the right and the Left.  For the Left, there are those who believe in the e pluribus unum promise of America and aren't really interested, and on the other end, there are those like Mr. Thompson who wholeheartedly support the idea of Southern Secession, and those are are warming to the idea from the sheer frustration of watching our country being dragged down by people who wouldn't pour shit out of their shoes merely because a Democrat suggested it.

I can make it easy on everyone:  Southern Secession will never happen.

Because there is no way that America corporations based in the South are going to give up sucking on the teat that is the U.S. Government, most of it supported with taxes from those socialist blue states.

Being profitable because of handouts from the U.S. Government is one whole hell of a lot easier than actually running a profitable business on its own merits.

Bitter much (Part II)?

Seems that those perennial poor losers, republicans across America, are so unhappy over this last election that they're signing petitions to secede from the union

People who are much kinder than I are chalking it up to temporary disgruntlement and feel that people don't really understand what seceding would mean and don't really want to secede.  They're just really upset they lost.

The poor little fucking crybabies.

In case you're wondering, I'm not chalking it up to anything other than the fact that the only America republicans love is the one they envision in their tiny little brains, the America that doesn't exist.  America is messy and multi-colored, morphing and multi-cultured, and if that America doesn't interest you, then adi-fucking-os!

Seriously, for the most part all we'd be losing is a bunch of southern states that are little more than a big drain on the rest of the country.

In other words, don't let that open door hit you in the ass on your way out.

Anchor 'em down in Anchorage

I've actually thought about this as mentioned by Darksyde of The Daily Kos earlier this week. But I'm willing to take it a step further and make all parties happier. Let's have Alaska secede from the union and let all these folks from the militia, the secessionists, and the tea-partiers move there and create their own, new country--hell, we can even pay their moving expenses.

Think about it: the state is huge, thus ample space for all. Very rugged territory, too, so plenty of space to play their war games, and without painting with too specific of a brush, plenty of hunting and fishing. The state is already significantly right wing, so everybody is on the same page (we can pay moving expenses for those no longer interested in staying--you know, the sane people--in Alaska). Since it's their country they can have their unregulated markets, carry guns like they did in the Old West, have as small of a government as they want, elect Sarah and Glenn as Prez and VP--all in all, it would be a libertarian paradise.

Even better, we could look out for them from a national defense standpoint like we do Canada--we may not always see eye to eye with our brothers up north, but let's face it, if any nation decided to pick on the Canadians, we'd open a can of whup ass on them faster than you can say "hoser." And be happy to do so. So--especially considering they'd all be armed anyway--they'd need to spend next to nothing on defense. We could work out some sweetheart deals on imports and exports (oil for citrus, fish for grain, etc.), and even loan them some start up money (with a small interest rate so as not to offend their desires for everyone to be self-reliant and self-responsible).

Granted, the cold weather might suck a bit, and getting used to that whole six months of night, six months of light oddity might take a while, but still I think it's a win-win situation. They get to live in their Lord of the Flies on steroids fantasyland, and the rest of us get to have civil debates on how to make America even greater than it already is.

And for those anal-retentives who will turn into the Rain Man without there being those fifty stars on our flag, we just give Puerto Rico statehood.

It's as simple as that...
