[Blogger's Aside: Back to back days!]
Saturday in the park, I think it was the Fourth of July, Saturday in the park, I think...I'm (twelve days) late again....
My introduction to this song, as has happened a couple of times before, was catching it on one of those stations featured usually somewhere in the 5000s on your cable TV channel listing. Back in the day, in St. Louis, good times with my kids, too many sleepless nights....
Blogger's Note: This week's post will be, other than the YouTube video for the song, without links (couldn't even find the lyrics anywhere) for most of the information relating to the band. Unfortunately, there was very little info about the band on the world wide web, and the only history I could find was on allmusic.com, which, for whatever reason, always causes my computer to freeze.
Bicycle, near as I can tell, was formed sometime in the nineties by singer/songwriter Kurt Liebert. After being laid off from his job in the pharmaceutical industry, he used his free time to pursue his dream of playing in a band and travelled from gig to gig with his collaborator Forrest Burtnette. They gained a little bit of a reputation, got a few musical grants, and headed for Seattle, where, again near as I can tell, they made the only album of their career in 1999. They had help from Chris Ballew of the band Presidents of the United States of America on production and backing vocals (note his Wikipedia entry makes no note of this work). In addition to Liebert and Burtnette, the band featured Andrew Massey on guitar and Mike Musberger on drums. And that's where my story ends--no idea what became of the band or its members after 1999.
Fun Fact: Bicycle got its name from when Liebert and Burtnette first started playing gigs--they rode to all their performances on bicycles, thus the band's name.
"Electrolux" was released on their rather expertly entitled LP, Bicycle. Though my guess would be neither charted, I have no information as to the success of either single or album.
As regular readers (all three of you) know, emaycee is a big fan of power pop...and that goes a long way to explaining my love for "Electrolux." Massey's guitars pulsate, Musberger's drums pound, and Liebert's vocals are reminiscent of the British Invasion of the sixties. In a nutshell, until this week I never realized how dependent I was on lyrics links for my song descriptions--yikes! Still, all in all, a great little tune that's well worth three minutes and thirteen seconds of your life.
Lyric Sheet: Forget about it--I'm notoriously bad at deciphering lyrics without a cheat sheet.
Enjoy:
Fuck Donald Trump
Peace,
emaycee
