Someone want to tell Mikey here that 86% of all SNAP benefits go to households that include a child, an elderly person, or a person with disabilities? Or that almost 40% of SNAP recipients are children? And that Whites account for 37% of SNAP recipients?

Oh, here's a surprise--corporations are still fucking us over
the “worker shortage” is corporate PR spin for a capital strike. They’re holding off on hiring in an attempt to force workers to take lower wages. They even try to enlist customers on their side with those bullshit “sorry we’re slow, no one wants to work right now!” signs. https://t.co/kkKcWcxxdB

Elections matter
![]() |
| And keep feeding your family... |
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer this week vetoed republican efforts to end the $300 supplement the federal government has been adding to our unemployment benefits...just as news broke that the red states who have ended the extra benefits have done nothing other than to deprive their economies of the extra dollars that could have been spent by its citizens had they left well enough alone. And that's what they deserve for trying to score political points instead of looking out for the best interests of their states and their citizens.
And this is just another in a long line of reasons why elections matter--instead of being at the beck and call of corporations that won't pay their employees a living wage or the notoriously worker unfriendly Chamber of Commerce like republican leaders, Democrats are out there making sure that the people on whose backs this country is carried are getting enough to feed their families until they can find decent paying jobs in industries they've spent their lives preparing for.
There very well might be forty percent of this country who are happy to screw themselves financially to own the libs, but the other sixty percent are firmly in the Screw That Bullshit Camp.
And those are the voters we need to be reaching out to in the 2022 elections and beyond.

| If they could pay you less they would |
The first thing that struck me when news came out this past week that republican led states were ending the supplemental unemployment benefits due to a shortage of workers was that, well, maybe if they had followed strict protocol when it came to COVID-19 perhaps this would have been over months ago and the extra benefits may not have been needed.
You reap what you sow.
The second thing that struck me is that, in a free market economy, if you have a shortage of workers the system is supposed to engender higher wages to attract people to work. Amazingly enough that didn't happen, so republican governors are bailing out Corporate America by making their citizens slave laborers.
The free market, it appears, like much of American life only works for Corporate America and the wealthy.
While it is unlikely (you have to have a brain after all, and not be sheep), we can at least hope that maybe, just maybe, some republican voters may realize that the leaders of the republican party just flat don't give a shit about them or their families, and maybe, just maybe, that a few Dr. Seuss books being discontinued isn't quite so bad as your family being needlessly sick and going hungry because your republican governor took your family's benefits away so that Corporate America could get away with not paying you a living wage.
Baby steps.

Maggots, Part 2

| Steven Mnuchin and other Trump economic advisers... |
You know what else isn't fair? The fact that Mnuchin's boss so magnificently fucked up America's coronavirus response that over fifty million people are out of work, many of them having lost jobs that will never be coming back.
Hell, if he wants to talk economic fairness, I have a host of unfair realities:
- How about republicans refusing to raise the minimum wage for 11 years despite the fact that the cost of living isn't getting any lower?
- Or what about wage stagnation, which has been engineered by Corporate America so that most Americans were lucky to see a 1 or 2% raise in their wages over the past three and a half years despite Trump's
"boom"bullshit economic voodoo? - Or how about that Trump tax cut which gave millions to billionaires and pennies to the average American?
- Or what about those folks who lost their jobs the last time republicans fucked up the economy, the Great Recession, and had to take jobs that paid significantly less than the job they lost, and have never recovered that lost income (on a personal note, I figure I'm down about eighty grand at this point)?
In the end, this also shows how clueless the Trump administration is about the pandemic we've now been facing for five months--the unemployment supplement was to keep people home so we could slow the virus and keep the economy churning. Sending people back to work when COVID-19 is still raging out of control will do nothing to stop it, and therefore send our economy even further into the abyss that Mnuchin and Trump have created.
