If they could pay you less they would

The first thing that struck me when news came out this past week that republican led states were ending the supplemental unemployment benefits due to a shortage of workers was that, well, maybe if they had followed strict protocol when it came to COVID-19 perhaps this would have been over months ago and the extra benefits may not have been needed.  

You reap what you sow.

The second thing that struck me is that, in a free market economy, if you have a shortage of workers the system is supposed to engender higher wages to attract people to work.  Amazingly enough that didn't happen, so republican governors are bailing out Corporate America by making their citizens slave laborers.

The free market, it appears, like much of American life only works for Corporate America and the wealthy.

While it is unlikely (you have to have a brain after all, and not be sheep), we can at least hope that maybe, just maybe, some republican voters may realize that the leaders of the republican party just flat don't give a shit about them or their families, and maybe, just maybe, that a few Dr. Seuss books being discontinued isn't quite so bad as your family being needlessly sick and going hungry because your republican governor took your family's benefits away so that Corporate America could get away with not paying you a living wage.

Baby steps.

Free markets are anything but free

 

Watching the epic disaster that unfolded in Texas last week leaving millions to freeze and thousands to pay exorbitant rates for the power to light and heat their homes due to its market based energy policies and republican fealty to capitalism, I am reminded yet again that there is nothing the government can do that the free market can't do a lot worse and soak consumers for a lot more money than the government would have.

You'd think by now Americans would have learned that lesson.

Homeless on the range

The latest victim in the republican party's war against humanity are the homeless.  Fox News, taking its cue from Adolph Hitler's adopted son Donald Trump, has been excoriating the homeless as proof positive that Democratic policies of socialism and safety nets are a massive failure, and as a means to drive a bigger wedge between urban and rural Americans.

Leaving aside the fact that homelessness is proof positive of the failures of both capitalism and free markets to lift all boats in a rising tide (among many, many others), apparently conservatives are worried that promoting hatred among their followers toward Muslims, Latinos, African-Americans, Women, and the LGBTQ community isn't going to be enough for Herr Trump to win re-election so they're adding even more Americans to their campaign to Make America Hate Again.

Before you know it, they'll be down to nothing but white males...oops, too late.

A special kind of stupid

You're the one with the headache--the "free" market is the ball and chain

One of the reasons Trumpcare has failed thus far, is that radical right-wingers like Rand Paul don't believe it goes far enough in screwing over your average American.  Paul wants to turn it all over to the marketplace (Exact quote:  "You have to believe that leaving people alone, that the marketplace will bring prices down." Seriously? Who the fuck believes that other than rich folks?) and let it decide what prices to charge folks like us who aren't millionaires.

And while this piece from Think Progress does an excellent job of debunking Paul's bullshit, it doesn't make the simple argument:  the marketplace doesn't care if you live or die, but the government (at least when it's run by Democrats) does.  Frankly, if the poor, the working class, and the middle class want affordable healthcare that will actually protect them when they're sick, the government must be involved.

Otherwise,  you can guarantee that business will start booming for funeral homes--which, come to think of it, may be the republican plan after all.

The corporatization of our Constitution

Rich Lowry, a writer for Politico, pitching a sissy fit over Arizona Governor Jan Brewer's vero of the state's gay discrimination bill, thinks that outlawing discrimination should not fall under the purview of our government but should be led by the free market.

Ponder that for a moment....

Do you really want Wal-Mart, which can't even pay its employees a living wage, to decide about your constitutionally guaranteed rights?  Or McDonald's?  How about Wall Street firms, like Goldman-Sachs and Merrill Lynch, who nearly destroyed our economy and left millions of Americans in dire economic straits? I know that most of such thoughts tend to think more of small businesses (e.g., wedding photographers or wedding cake bakers) but it's a small slope to corporations that franchise numerous outlets or corporations deciding it's okay for their offices in the South to discriminate against African-Americans.

I mean it's bad enough that our Supreme Court, as led by John Roberts, is the best that money can buy and has virtually decimated the American worker and consumer--but there's someone dim-witted enough to think
that we should let corporations have the right to decimate our civil rights as well?

What happens if it's more profitable to discriminate?
