Our economy, thanks to Donald Trump

 On Friday the Labor Department announced that the U.S. economy had lost 140,000 jobs during the month of December.  It's a number that isn't likely to get much better over the coming months until the coronavirus vaccine has had time to do its job.

I note this because it's obvious our economy is going to need more stimulus over the next few months, which would be next to impossible had Ralph Warnock and Jon Ossoff not won their runoff elections in Georgia last week.  The republican party has shown again and again that the livelihoods of ordinary Americans are secondary to their need to keep a grip on power, and had we lost those elections, God only knows how far they would have been happy to let the economy fall in an attempt to make President Biden look bad.

In light of the attempted coup last week, it's easy to forget about how important winning a majority in the U.S. Senate was.  It's highly likely that the Democratic Party saved our republic not just once, but twice last week--and three times now in the past two months.

Contrary to what the right wing nutjobs who stormed the capitol building last week think, we are the true patriots.

These guys are in it for you, not the money

I'm shocked--shocked I tell you!--that republicans refused to pass (dimwit House Minority Leader Kevin "My Nose Is Up Trump's Ass on Everything But This" McCarthy blocked it) by unanimous consent a direct payment of $2000 to every American making less than $99,000 a year and add it to the COVID-19 relief bill.  Because, as we've seen time and time again, republicans only care about Americans if they're rich.

Also not surprised that after the House has an actual vote on it Monday and Democrats pass it, the republican controlled Senate won't take it up.  Because fuck poor people, am I right?

It is absolutely vital that Democrats run TV and radio ads and have Ralph Warnock and Jon Ossoff hammer David "Funny Timing on That Stock Trading, Huh?" Perdue and Kelly "Is the Local Leader of the KKK Really a Racist?" Loeffler for the next thirteen days over republicans' complete and total indifference to the economic pain of far too many Americans because of Trump's incompetence in handling the coronavirus pandemic.

It's this simple:  republicans will be happy to let millions of Americans starve and be evicted and pin their failure to care about anyone that's not wealthy on Democrats to help their chances of winning in 2022 and 2024.  The best way to prevent that from happening is to not give them the chance to fuck us all economically by electing Warnock and Ossoff to the Senate and therefore controlling the outcome ourselves.

 Apparently republicans in Georgia are having a fundraiser for Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue in their Senate runoff against Ralph Warnock and Jon Osoff that costs $25,000 per couple to attend, with the promise that there will be a special appearance from Mitch McConnell.

Leaving aside how sad and demented republicans must be if seeing Mitch McConnell constitutes something special, I'd just like to note that if it's a turtle they want to see, I'd be glad to let them take a gander at my son's turtle Leonardo for five bucks.  Hell, it'd save them $24,995 and they wouldn't have the stink of spending time in a room with a traitor tarnishing their reputations.

Ralph Warnock and Jon Ossoff, future Senators

 There is currently a social media platform known as Parler, which is a site for Donald Trump supporters, that is calling for Trump voters to boycott the upcoming Georgia runoff election (for the two U.S. Senate seats in which no candidate received 50% of the vote in the general election) because republican candidates Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue have not been subservient enough to Trump.

I would just like to state that I heartily endorse this boycott--Senators Loeffler and Perdue haven't been nearly nice enough to Donald Trump and the best way to make them pay would be for Ralph Warnock and Jon Ossoff to be elected as the new United States Senators from Georgia.

The republican party really needs to weed out the snowflakes!

The demoralization of the story

Cloudy with a chance of meatheads...

Though some nice obituaries (one here, another here, and also here) have been written trying to mitigate the disaster that was Jon Ossoff's loss to Karen Handel in GA-06, it's really hard to see much good coming out of it.  Whether you're a glass half-full (Ossoff outperformed the last Dem in this race by 19+ points) or half-empty (underperformed Hillary Clinton by 3+ points) person a loss is a loss is a loss.  Even worse, this was probably the best chance we had of all the special elections thus far and the race really wasn't even that close.

And that's not even noting that Donald Trump has historical disapproval ratings, which didn't seem to hurt Handel one bit.

It all comes down to God, gays, and guns and republicans are just better at rallying their troops around those talking points.  Realistically, I see very little chance that Dems will take back the House in 2018--with the exception of 2012, we've lost the close races in virtually every competitive race since 2010 and it's not usually even as close as the closing polls show (we might also want to work on the accuracy of our polling).

I see very little chance that Trumpcare won't pass now (and Lord I hope I'm wrong).  We really needed this one to put a little fear in vulnerable republicans and that isn't happening after another stinging defeat for the Democrats.  They're going to push hard to enact the rest of their agenda (more for rich people, more for rich people, and more for rich people) so that short attention span voters will have forgotten how much republicans have fucked them over by the 2018 mid-terms.

Still, as I noted after the election of Donald Trump, we have to keep fighting.  Eventually the worm will turn, and when it does, let's hope Democrats have finally learned to go for the jugular.

Devil's advocate, if you please

The Great Democratic Hope

Once again, I don't want to take anything away from yesterday's results in GA-06--Jon Ossoff took a commanding percentage of the vote, he's running a spirited campaign, and Democrats seem genuinely enamored of both the man and his politics.  And considering that republicans have held this seat since 1980, the percentage of the vote he had looks even better in retrospect.

But any way you slice it, Democrats once again did not win a House seat in a special election.  And while we will have a runoff in June, the final tally shows that Democrats, even with Ossoff winning 48% (give or take) of the vote, did not rule the day in the election (while it was close, the final tally was R's 50, D's 49).  Republicans will also have two months to collect and use tons of Koch Brothers money to crucify Ossoff while trying to win this seat yet again.

On the bright side, it's also two months for Donald Trump to keep fucking up.  And Ossoff's opponent, Karen Handel, is notorious for a) losing elections, and b) being a sworn enemy of Planned Parenthood who would love nothing more than to energize lots and lots of women to keep Handel in Georgia.

But in the end, it's the South, and republicans will play their usual hand and make this race about God, gays, and guns.

And if I were a betting man, I'd wager that it's going to be enough in a state like Georgia to chalk up another loss for the Dems.

Holy cow, another moral victory

No, it's off to Georgia now...

I don't want to take anything away from what Democrat James Thompson did in Kansas-04 yesterday--Trump won this heavily red district by 27 points and the previous Congressional Rep, Mike Pompeo, won it three straight times by just north of thirty points, so for Thompson to lose to republican Ron Estes by only 7 points says volumes.

And it may very well be that Markos Moulitsas is right and if we can continue this trend of gaining twenty points in each district it will put 123 districts into play and give us a superb chance to take the House back in 2018.

But, boy, wouldn't it be nice to win one of these for once?  For the sake of Democratic morale?  And how about getting an extra Democratic vote in the House?

I'd be willing to wager that republicans don't give a rat's ass if they won by 7 or by 30--they're just happy they'll have another reliably red vote for all the bullshit legislation they can't pass.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but moral victories really just don't cut it anymore, especially in the age of Donald Trump.
