Another proud week for Michigan

A platform in the republican party

Amidst a Detroit Metro Times story this week about a republican Facebook page (since shut down) wherein members advocated for the burning, shooting, beating, and raping of (among others) Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, M-08 representative Elissa Slotkin, Michigan congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, and Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar, State Senator Peter Lucido (R--of course--Shelby Township) responded to a question about his participation in said group by Michigan Advance reporter Allison Donahue by suggesting that a group of boys nearby could have " a lot of fun" with her.  And then proceeded to explain away his remarks as just the way he talks to young women.

How this utter cretin could even still be a state senator is beyond me. 

While Lucido did eventually give the usual half-assed republican apology, it's important to remember--especially as we vote this November--that Lucido and those who commented in the above noted Facebook page are not the exception in today's republican party, they are the rule.

And we should let any business thinking about setting up shop here in the Wolverine State know exactly what Michigan republicans think of their female employees, and their mothers, wives, and daughters.

Compare and contrast

What has she got that they ain't got?  Courage!

It would have been easy for my Congressional Representative, Elissa Slotkin, who won her first election last November as a Democrat in a red district, to have remained on the sidelines as the revelations of Trump's traitorous quid pro quo with the Ukrainian President came to light.  She could have proclaimed that she wasn't certain it rose to the level of impeachable offenses, and that the people of her district, MI-08, sent her to Washington to help solve their problems, and not get involved in political quibbling.

Instead, Rep. Slotkin saw Trump's actions for what they are:  a direct threat to our Constitution, our rule of law, and our democracy and she boldly called for Trump's impeachment, despite the difficulty it will present when she runs for re-election next year, and despite the fact that it literally puts her political career in jeopardy.

Compare her political courage to that of republicans, who in light of all the evidence before them are either choosing to ignore or making excuses for Trump's actions with regard to the Ukraine, all in the name of saving their political asses.

When it comes to republicans, it seems their newfound strategy when the going gets tough in the Trump era is to tuck tail and run.

Doesn't bode too well for the future of our country, does it?

Can we get an "Amen!" for Michigan?

In Michigan, Democrats came, saw, and conquered

Though I don't watch her show anymore, Rachel Maddow has spent considerable time over the past eight years explaining (and rightfully so) how Michigan has been a laboratory for implementing the republican game plan--everything on the GOP wish list, from passing a right to work (for less) law to privatizing government responsibilities, from taxing seniors and giving tax breaks to corporations to cutting working folks' pensions, the GOP has done here in Michigan.

No more.  Last week Michiganders delivered a gut punch to the republican agenda from top to bottom.  For the first time since I moved here nearly twenty years ago, Democrats will control the top three spots in our state--Governor (Gretchen Whitmer). Attorney General (Dana Nessel), and Secretary of State (Jocelyn Benson).  For the first time since 2010, Democrats will be on par with republicans for the U.S. House, with seven representatives each.  Also for the first time since I moved here, my U.S. House representative will be a Democrat (Elissa Slotkin).  While we didn't end republican control in our state legislature, we did end the republicans' super majority which means their agenda is done through at least 2022.  We added a Supreme Court seat, elected the first Muslim woman to the U.S. House (Rashida Tlaib), and passed propositions ending gerrymandering, implementing automatic voter registration, and legalizing marijuana.

I know I'm biased as Michigan is my adopted home, but the Democratic rout in Michigan has to be the most under reported story of the 2018 midterm elections.  In a state that is a must win for Donald Trump in 2020, we provided a blueprint for turning a recovering purple state blue again.  And it's a very progessive blueprint.

Michigan is a bellwether for 2020 because Michigan voters resoundingly found the republican experiment to be a massive failure.

Just like Donald Trump.
