And the fucking worthless host didn't even question an obvious lie

The puppy killer, Kristi Noem, on Face The Nation: “I do know that Los Angeles wouldn’t be standing today if President Trump hadn’t taken action. That city would have burned down if left to the devices of the mayor and the governor of that state.” 🤦‍♀️

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. DLII--Shawn Mullins: Lullaby

A little ditty, about...another FNJ post that's (stylishly?) late....

My introduction to this week's tune came back in the day when I was still living in my one-bedroom apartment in Belleville, IL.  Memories being what they are, I can't remember if it was via the video on MTV or VH-1 or Much Music, or on my cable services radio on the TV.  I was intrigued but not certain of the song after my first listen, if I recall, but after a few more times hearing it came to love its take on L.A.'s lifestyles of the rich and famous....

If ever there was an artist here on Friday Night Jukebox that met the definition of one hit wonder, it's Shawn Mullins.  Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, Mullins got his start musically in high school (Clarkston Hight School in Clarkston, GA, not to be confused with Clarkston High School in Clarkston, MI where my youngest son went to school...oh the things we learn here on our Friday Night posts, or Sunday night as the case may be), continued during his time in the military (honorably discharged as a first lieutenant), and began in earnest when his military service ended.  His big hit came in 1998, and it's allowed him to carry on as a musician now for thirty-five years.  He also joined a supergroup (of sorts--they all had modest success), The Thorns, with emaycee kind of fave Pete Droge (first post, second post) and Matthew Sweet.  For his career, Mullins has released 10 studio albums, five live albums, and three compilations.

Fun Fact:  Please don't take this in the wrong way, because I thoroughly believe having even just one minor hit, let alone a top ten hit, in your musical career is utterly astounding, but one of Mullins' compilations is called The Essential Shawn Mullins and it struck me as kind of funny because how "essential" can the music of a one hit wonder be?  Again, see opening words of previous sentence....

"Lullaby" was the first single released from Mullins' sixth album, the rather existentially entitled Soul's Core.  The single would reach #7 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100 (and #2 in Canada--so many cool kids in the Great White North!), while the album peaked at #54 on the Billboard 200 (and was eventually certified as platinum--another feather in Mr. Mullins' cap).

For a hit single, "Lullaby" is certainly something of an oddity.  For one, it's a nuanced portrait of a sad rich girl, growing up around the stars in L.A., and a gentle poke at the Los Angeles celebrity culture.  For another, other than the chorus, it's more a spoken word performance than actual singing.  But Mullins makes it work, delivering a deadpan description of her life and the star-studded city, and, probably most importantly to its hit status, absolutely nailing a catchy as all hell chorus.  Throughout there's a discerning acoustic guitar, some nice electric guitar bits in the chorus, and just enough from the drums to keep the rhythm flowing.  In the end, it's just a different enough take on a pop tune to keep you coming back for more, and a pat on the back to Mr. Mullins for rolling the dice and having it come up Top Ten Hit.

Lyric Sheet: "I ain't so sure about this place/It's hard to play a gig in this town/And keep a straight face/Seems like everybody's got a plan/It's kind of life Nashville with a tan..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. DLI--Jackson Browne: Jamaica Say You Will

'Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to...be late again....

Back in the day, when I discovered an artist it wasn't enough to just enjoy the record at hand, I had to go out and get their entire catalog (it came to a quick end after marriage and two kids--neither the time nor the funds for that kind of amusement).  This led to a number of great discoveries, and as you might expect, a few not so great albums in my collection.  One of those great discoveries was this week's album, which led me to this week's tune--which is arguably one of the best first songs on a debut album in rock and roll history....

I wrote about Jackson Browne in Jukebox, Vol. CV back in 2016.  Since that time, Browne has released one album, two singles, and toured with James Taylor. He was also in two episodes of emaycee fave Roadies As it was a few years before I began leaving a link to each artist's body of work, I'll leave Browne's here--it's important to me to recognize the entire body of work if only because it's a reminder of the talent it takes to have a long career in music.

"Jamaica Say You Will" was the first song on Browne's debut album, the ever so cleverly entitled Jackson Browne.  The song was not released as a single, while the album reached #53 on the Billboard 200.

Fun Fact:  Though I could be wrong, I believe this week's tune is the first time I've written about a second song from one studio album (obviously not including my yearly album review).  Well done, Mr. Browne (as if he cares)!

As I was doing my half-assed research for this week's tune, I was struck by the amount of people who wrote about the song even though a) it wasn't released as a single, and b) didn't really get a lot of radio play (a la, say, "Stairway to Heaven")--it's an album track that struck a chord (so to speak).  Browne has called the song a fable based on reality (there was a "Jamaica" in his life, but most of the events in the song are from his imagination), and the story of a woman sailing the seas with her father while the man who loves her is happy to follow makes for a compelling single.  The music is sparse--Browne's piano echoes throughout, his vocals convey an easy earnestness, and as I played it in preparation for this week's post I was taken with the smoothness of the rhythm of the drums (once again--amazing how often I discover the drums when I'm writing about a song).  In the end, Browne (I read this somewhere so it's not an emaycee original) excels at writing catchy melodies, and when you add in a romantic story and heartfelt vocals it's sailing the rock and roll seas--which is a lovely place to be.

Lyric Sheet:  "Jamaica say you will/Help me find a way to fill these empty hours/Say you will come again tomorrow..."

Enjoy:

Pure Nazism

This is footage from today in MacArthur Park. Minutes before, there were more than 20 kids playing — then, the MILITARY comes through. The SECOND I heard about this, I went to the park to speak to the person in charge to tell them it needed to end NOW. Absolutely outrageous.

SLOTKIN: Have you given the order to be able to shoot at unarmed protesters in any way? HEGSETH: What is that based on? SLOTKIN: It is based on Trump giving that order to your predecessor, who I give a lot of credit to bc he didn't accept the order. He has more guts & balls than you

We need justice

The tragedy in Minnesota today is a prime example of the radicalization of politics in this country. The deaths of Rep. Hortman and her husband are heartbreaking and senseless. The violence against Democrats over the past week is vile. We need justice against these political attacks.
