Who else do they have?

Despite the fact that Marco Rubio did his best Wall-E imitation in last Saturday's republican debate in New Hampshire, I really have to wonder who else the republican establishment is going to rally behind.  Considering that they hate Trump and Cruz, that leaves Chris Christie, who is too much of an asshole to ever get elected President, John Kasich, who probably bores his own family, and Jeb! Bush, who has proven to be a miracle worker in that his campaign has been so inept he's made his big brother look like FDR.

I still think it's more likely that either Trump or Cruz win the republican nomination, but it's hard to see that if republicans go for the establishment candidate again this year how it can he anyone other than Rubio.

He may be a lightweight, but it's not as if Mitt Romney or John McCain could have given Plato a run for his money intellectually.

Smile on your brother (or not)

It's hard to figure out what the republicans endgame is in their reactions to the student protests at the University of Missouri--Donald Trump called the students' actions disgusting, Ben Carson said it was political correctness run amok, and Chris Christie claimed it was all President Obama's fault (though one supposes republicans could find a link to blame Obama for the Black Death regardless of the fact that it happened 700 years before his birth).  Um...don't republicans pretty much have the racist vote already sewn up?

Good to see, though, here in 2015, that republicans are still fighting the battles of the 1960s  (those goshdarned hippies!)--furthering their soon to be relegation to the dustbins of our history.

Scottie, we hardly knew ye

Two down, fourteen to go....

Scott Walker pulled the plug on his comatose Presidential campaign today, calling on his colleagues to do the same and rally around a "true" conservative candidate who could defeat Donald Trump.  Apparently Walker didn't get the memo--over the course of the last twenty years, from Newt Gingrich to Tom DeLay to Dick Cheney to Sarah Palin, Trump is the "true" conservative they've molded for the republican party's base.

As for Walker, who could have ever guessed that hating on working men and women, failing to create jobs, presiding over a declining standard of living, having a scandal plagued governorship, and being an all around lying asshole could doom a campaign?

Doesn't bode well for Chris Christie methinks...

Telling it like it isn't

Chris Christie today became the fourteenth republican to declare his candidacy for his party's nomination for the Presidency in 2016, promising to be a blunt speaker on the issues facing the American people, yada, yada, yada.

Whatever.

Christie has been an absolute disaster as Governor of New Jersey, still has the taint of Bridgegate hanging over his candidacy, is highly unpopular in his home state, and it's hard to imagine the powers that be in the republican party are going to take another chance on a Northeastern governor who has zero chance of winning the state of his governorship (see also, Romney, Willard).

But if, by some miracle, he did manage to win the republican nomination he would surely be finished by this:  the American people do not go shopping at Assholes 'r' Us when they're looking for their next President.

And Chris Christie is a king-sized asshole.

Hiding in plain sight

Let's see....

Jeb Bush embarrassed himself in the past week by proclaiming himself to be the technology candidate and then hiring as his technology chief a misogynistic homophobic racist and releasing a slew of e-mails from his governship in Florida trying to show his caring nature only he didn't care enough to redact the senders' personal information (including social security numbers).   Rand Paul embarrased himself in the past week by proclaiming that kids who were vaccinated suddenly turned into crazed zombies and that Hillary Clinton spawned ISIS.  Chris Christie embarrassed himself by going overseas and showing he knows nothing about foreign policy or vaccinations.  Scott Walker embarrassed himself today by also going overseas and refusing to say whether he believes in evolution because it isn't a question a politician should be concerned with (fucking really?).

No wonder republicans this week began sniping at Hillary Clinton because she's not campaigning and is supposedly in hiding.  If our candidate was peforming this badly, I'd want anyone out there from the other side who might deflect attention, too.

Christ, how does anyone vote for a republican?

How now brown nose?

In a campaign stop for Rep. Steve King this week, Chris Christie said he and King "think alike."

While I don't see Christie getting the republican nomination in 2016, if he did, the only way he wins the general is to present himself as being a somewhat moderate governors from the Northeast (it obviously did not help Mitt Romney, but Christie isn't Richie Rich, Jr. either).  And as he presents himself thusly, how often do you think his opposition, not to mention every liberal blogger from here to Honolulu, is going to bring that quote up?  Steve King is on a plane for republican nutjobs with such luminous doofuses as Michelle Bachmann and Louis Gohmert.

And herein lies the problem for the modern republican party--they are so beholden to their tea party wing that it makes them virtually unelectable on a national stage.

Christie's not a crook

The lucky taxpayers of New Jersey found out today that the $1 million dollars they spent on Chris Christie's internal investigation was used by Christie's hand-picked lawyers to announce that they had exonerated Gov. Christie of any wrongdoing in the Bridgegate scandal.  It actually was perpetrated by his staffers' love lives and the mayor of Hoboken yawning.

This announcement was about as surprising as had they stood before the good people of New Jersey and announced that Antarctica was fucking cold.

Whoever it was said that fiction pales in comparison to reality was a wise, wise person--because you just can't make shit like this up.

Not so fast there, President Christie

As the Bridge Scandal worsens in New Jersey, Chris Christie's Presidential ambitions, while not over yet, are taking a huge hit.  Can you imagine a cutthroat like Ted Cruz with this scandal in his back pocket during the republican primaries in 2016?  Even if Christie wasn't aware, he still hired the fuckers who were petty enough to unleash hell on thousands in the small town of Fort Lee, New Jersey over a refusal to give a campaign endorsement.

But the bigger question is...if Christie is done, who is the candidate republicans can turn to in 2016 for a chance to win the election?  It was McCain in 2008, Willard Romney in 2012, but who is left other than Christie for 2016?  All the rest are Tea Party psychopaths who, barring a complete collapse of the U.S. economy, have about as much of a chance to be President as I do and I'm not even running.

I'm sure they'll find someone who has a voice that passes for reason in republican in the next two years, but you have to admit that Democrats--who because of demographics are starting out on solid ground--considering a run are considering it with a little bigger smile on their faces these days.

A couple of thoughts on King Christie's coronation

I'll probably live to regret this post (and I'll freely admit that Chris Christie is the only republican I fear in 2016), but while everyone on MSNBC was falling all over themselves with the implications of,  and Christie's increased chances to be President in 2016 because of, his huge re-election victory for the New Jersey governorship tonight, I couldn't help but wonder...

• Exactly how is Christie's humongous victory in New Jersey going to garner the women's vote, the African-American vote, the Asian vote, and the Latino vote for republicans in the 2016 Presidential race?
• Do you believe there's any way Christie's massive victory tonight will keep the republican's core base, old white people, from dying for the next three years?
• In the republican waves of 2009 and 2010, republicans won governorships in New Jersey, Virginia, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Iowa.  Why is it, do you suppose, that Mitt Romney won zip, zero, nada of these states in the 2012 Presidential election?

Just sayin'.
