 After today's traitorous lawlessness in our capital, it is time for republicans to put on their big boy pants and get Mike Pence and the President's Cabinet together and do what needs to be done:  invoke the 25th Amendment.

Donald Trump's unfitness for office reached a nadir today, in his incitement of violence, his inability to accept reality concerning his decisive defeat in the Presidential election, and his refusal to call in the National Guard to quell an insurrection.  The United States is in more danger than it has been at any time in my lifetime, and the nation cannot afford to have Donald Trump in the White House for two more weeks.

The time is now--President Pence until Joe Biden's inauguration in fourteen days is now vital.

Be careful what you wish for...

 When I was in college I sent a letter to the editor to The Kokomo Tribune (a staunchly conservative newspaper that was happy to print opposing views) in rebuttal to another letter extolling the virtues of conservatism.  It was a well reasoned letter, full of what I had learned in my time at Indiana University at Kokomo, and it, too, garnered a rebuttal.  The gentleman who responded to my letter was happy to admit that I was smarter than he was, but in effect said he'd rather be stupid so he could continue to believe what he believed, even if it was wrong.

I note this not because I wish to make fun of conservatives--I don't think I'm being mean when I say that many conservatives wear stupidity like a badge of honor.  They're proud to be stupid.

Unfortunately, being stupid can have its drawbacks--an easy example is how republicans vote again and again against their best economic interests by voting for candidates who have done everything possible to make sure their voters make less money and have less benefits so that rich people can have even more money they don't need (i.e., how much better can they eat?).

It appears that on January 6th, better than 150 republicans are going to reject the Electoral College vote of several states that did not cast its votes for Donald Trump.  This is a hopeless gambit, and all but a handful of the politicians backing it know it to be such.  But a vast majority of Trump supporters are not smart enough to know the difference between bread and bullshit and will believe they are being cheated out of their candidate of choice for President.  That, in fact, Congress should be able to overturn the will of 81 million voters.

What they don't know, is that Donald Trump is an idiot, and even if such a ploy could have been pulled off, Trump has nowhere near the smarts to be the one to do it (nor to surround himself with people who are).  But I can guarantee you that at some point in our history there will be a Presidential candidate who is smart enough to do it, and the odds are tremendously good, based upon the theory that Democrats tend to be much smarter than republicans, that it will be a Democrat who is first to overturn the will of the people.

My only regret is that I probably won't be alive to see their Trump ruse blow up in their faces and therefore will miss a much needed opportunity to laugh my fucking ass off.

Victory Over Trump

Beating Trump was just as important

 While the coronavirus pandemic will undoubtedly be the biggest story of 2020, I don't think the election of Joe Biden to be the 46th President of the United States can be overstated.  Eighty-one million Americans stood up to COVID-19, republican voter suppression, and the crudity, violence, and lack of compassion of Trump and his supporters and said a resounding "No!" to fascism, authoritarianism, and white nationalism.  I truly believe that after another four years of Donald Trump, America as we know it would have survived in name only.

To say nothing of the tens of thousands of our fellow Americans who would have died over the coming months because the Trump administration would have done nothing to stop the pandemic once he had secured victory.

A paean to those of you who fought to end Trump's reign so that the generations of Americans who follow us will know the promise of America that we have known:

Seems that Smartmatic, the company that makes the voting machines that Fox News and Newsmax have been lying about since Joe Biden won the election, sent a cease and desist letter to said propaganda organizations letting them know that either they retract their lies or face a lawsuit.  Since both companies knew their stories concerning the voting machines were completely without merit, they both retracted their stories faster than you can say "FUCK UP!"

Funny how the truth has a way of coming to the forefront when lies will cost a company tens of millions of dollars in lawsuits, ain't it?

Maybe it's time for the blue states to secede?

Just your average red state republicans

 Yesterday, the state of Texas petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to challenge the election results in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Georgia.  Just to give you a very brief idea of the sheer lunacy of their petition, a) the Solicitor General of Texas, who argues for the state at the Supreme Court, refused to put his name on the suit (presumably to keep his legal reputation intact), and b) one of their arguments that the votes should be overturned was that no Presidential candidate has ever won Ohio and Florida and lost...except that Richard Nixon did just that in 1960.  Trust me, there are numerous other issues.

Today, the shithole states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, and West Virginia joined Texas in their political stunt.  Keep in mind that these states represent less than a third of the American people and are trying to argue that the will of 81 million Americans and 306 Electoral College electors doesn't matter.  

Bear in mind as well that, with the exception of Florida and Texas, these states all are a drain on the rest of America.  They receive more in federal money than they pay in taxes--and are able to do that because the blue states are so much more successful economically.  These are also the states that lead the nation in poverty, have the worst education systems, whose citizen's are the least likely to escape poverty, the highest divorce rates, the most racist laws, and just to put the cherry on top, lead the nation in porn viewing (what a surprise--like the Jennifer Lawrences of the world want to live in South Dakota).

With each passing day I wonder more and more why the blue states--at the very least the West Coast and the North Atlantic states--don't secede.  Why should we be ruled by the whims of an uneducated and delusional minority?  Why should we support their laziness and ineptitude?

Frankly, as far as I'm concerned we should let them have their Darwinian clusterfuck and let them spiral into the third world country they were all meant to become without the charity of the blue states.  And the sooner the better.

Good men doing something

Good folks in Michigan saving our Democracy

 Yesterday, when two republican Wayne County Board of Canvassers (William Hartmann and Monica Palmer) refused to certify the votes of Black Americans in Detroit, the outrage from Michigan voters was so quick and so overwhelming that within hours they reversed themselves and certified the votes.  Keep in mind that Hartmann and Palmer were questioning a couple hundred votes (Trump lost Wayne County by more than 300,000 votes), and both made it perfectly clear that they were happy to certify white votes, just not black votes.

After the Constitutional Convention Benjamin Franklin was asked what kind of government had been created for America and Franklin famously responded, "A republic, if you can keep it."  If we do indeed save our Democracy from Donald Trump and his minions, I have no doubt that the actions of Michigan Democrats yesterday to cry foul and call for our better angels to guide us will be taught ages hence to our school children as an important moment in the salvaging of our great nation.

Ned Staebler, a Democratic activist and businessman, gave an impassioned speech that--and I say this with all due respect to hyperbole--may go down with Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death" speech as one of the most important and courageous in our history:

In the end, republicans like to talk about heroes, but Democrats actually become them and in so doing, come to represent the moral center that has held us together for 144 years.

One of many great Socialist ideas

 Don't know about you, but I sure hope all those folks who voted for Trump because "Socialism!" will be turning down their Social Security checks and eligibility for Medicare.  Also think that any of them who are first time home buyers should turn down that FHA loan and pay premium dollar for their first mortgage.  And college loans--forget the government, go to a bank and get a market based interest rate and pay thousands more over the course of their repayment.  Same thing for anyone starting a business--why use the Small Business Administration when you can get gouged by a for profit bank?  And don't even get me started on all the medical breakthroughs provided by the NIH or the CDC.

I'm not holding my breath--most of those folks who voted republican because "Socialism!" firmly believe in socialism for me but not for thee...especially when the "thee" is black and brown folks.
