 What have we here?  One of the worst Presidents in our republic's history, Donald Trump, despite all his bluster about what a great businessman he was (LOL) had the worst GDP over his four years than any President since another of our worst Presidents, Herbert Hoover, who blundered America into the Great Depression.

Color me shocked.  Whoever could have guessed that the man who ran a fucking casino into bankruptcy would fuck up the U.S. economy, too?

 I've been hearing over the past couple of days from the handful of republicans who seem to understand that impugning our elections isn't so good for America's long term health, who either worry about or try to explain to Trump that in so doing, he's destroying "his legacy."  He is doing nothing of the sort--his legacy is already set in stone.

In fact it's going to be branded upon his ass, just like the Great Depression has been permanently branded on Herbert Hoover's ass, and it's going to be that in the moment of the greatest health crisis that America has ever been exposed to, his administration had one of the greatest failures in our republic's history.

And also like Hoover, he's going to spend eternity in the circle of Hell reserved for our worst Presidents.

This will seem tame compared to the 78 days after the election

The single scariest blog post I've read this week is this one, wherein the author posits that win or lose, for Donald Trump the pandemic will end on November 4th.  What's frightening is that he's absolutely right--Trump is only doing the minimum now to curb the coronavirus because he has an election coming up in six weeks.  After that he will have absolutely no reason to counter the virus, one which he already views as little more than a nuisance.  

Want losing candidate precedence?  In the aftermath of Hoover's crushing defeat at the hands of FDR in 1932, Hoover attempted to extort Roosevelt, telling him that unless FDR dropped plans for the New Deal Hoover would not lift a finger to help Americans in the depths of the Great Depression.  Roosevelt refused, and Hoover kept his word (good to know that Trump isn't the only psychopath to set foot in the White House).  It ended up becoming such a disaster for Americans that Congress changed the inauguration date from March 4th to its current January 21st to prevent future Presidents from having as much time to leave such carnage in their wake.

And after a win...let's just not fucking go there.

Either way, the potential for colossal damage to America is enough to keep me pacing the floor at three in the morning....

Paging Herbert Hoover

Trump's giving him a run for his money as worst ever

Republicans are taking one hell of a gamble banking on the economy turning around enough in the next five months to boost their electoral chances--especially considering that they're going to need 100% of Americans actively involved in the economy (hard to see for at least a few more months as many elderly people and people with children will probably continue to take a hard pass) and the unemployment numbers dropping to an encouraging level (30 million people aren't all going back to work before November).

But the more I see their strategy the more it reminds me of Herbert Hoover's strategy in 1932, where he kept telling the millions of unemployed Americans who were going hungry to trust the markets and all would be well soon.

Spoiler alert:  The final tally in the 1932 election was 472 electoral votes for Franklin D. Roosevelt, and 58 for Hoover.  Democrats would hold the White House for the next twenty years, and control of Congress for almost a generation.

Here's hoping the old adage that what we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history bites republicans on Donald Trump's fat ass in a big way this November.

Gloom, despair, and agony

America under republican leadership

The most amazing part of the past couple of days has been watching Democrats throw republicans lifeline after lifeline and watching republicans plow ahead with their plan to reopen the economy, coronavirus be damned, and set themselves up for a bloodbath this November unlike anything they've seen since Roosevelt opened up a can of whoop ass on Hoover in 1932.

From letting Dr. Fauci testify with his expertise before the Senate, to highlighting the CDC plan for reopening the economy (which the Trump administration tried to suppress), to the economic package Democrats unveiled today right as Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell was letting Americans know that this economic downturn was going to be a lot worse than folks are preparing for...the Democratic Party has done all it can to keep the country safe and prepare for the tsunami that's coming.  The republican party is basically throwing a Hail Mary pass in hopes of a miraculous economic recovery, but the end result won't be merely losing a game but killing thousands more Americans and sending our economy into a tailspin that will make the Great Depression look tame.

I have no doubt that Joe Biden and Donald Trump will each get 45% of the vote this November, but I'm having a real hard time seeing the 10% of Americans who will decide this election walking into their voting booths and thinking, "What this country really needs is more needless deaths and a wrecked economy...I'm voting Trump!"

At that point we might be able to cue "Taps" for the republican party.

Before the deluge

Days of future past--the Trump economy

A couple of years before the Great Recession, I began seeing pieces--and not Chicken Little, The Sky Is Falling pieces, but thoughtful pieces generally from economists--that our economy was not as strong as it appeared and that an ugly crash was coming.

And we all know how that turned out.

Sadly I am seeing those same kinds of pieces again, showing that many of the same actions which caused the last downturn are being repeated, or speculating on how bad Trump's trade wars are going to hurt the economy.  Even worse, while George W. Bush was a moron, at least he had the good sense to surround himself with people (though free enterprise/capitalism mongers to a fault) who had some semblance of knowledge concerning our economy.  Not so Donald Trump, a moron who has surrounded himself with other morons (mostly from his own family) who will do little more than stand on the toilet seat and watch the American economy swirl down the drain, while the rest of us suffer the ravages of yet another economic collapse caused by republicans.

Please know that I am not hoping for an economic downturn to thwart Trump--I've seen firsthand how much recessions can hurt a family's finances.  But we need to prepare for it, and react to it in such a way that, like Herbert Hoover before him, we make sure that republican incompetence on the economy sticks to Trump and their party like stink to shit.

And twenty years without a republican President sounds mighty fine to me.

Red, red wrath

John Steinbeck's  novel, The Grapes of Wrath,, turned 75 last month.  Arguably the greatest political novel in American history, the book chronicles the Joad family as they are driven out of their Oklahoma home by banks and bad weather in the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression, make their way to California, and suffer much like the poor do in today's America--police brutality, many fighting for a few low-paying jobs, hunger, homelessness, and helplessness in the face of the unchecked power of big business and the wealthy.

The novel also accentuates one of the key differences between The Great Depression and The Great Recession:  Americans' reactions.  Today we have what could be characterized as melancholy resignation; then they had what could be called...fucking anger.  And that wrath led to much good change--unions got stronger which eventually led to better pay and benefits and a robust middle class, Social Security, the Safety Net, and a host of other governmental programs called the New Deal which gave working class America a chance against the behemoths of industry and wealth.

Steinbeck noted when he wrote the novel that "I want to put a tag of shame on the greedy bastards who are responsible for this [The Great Depression]."   One would be hard pressed to find anyone outside of Liberal bloggers trying to do the same for the Great Recession.

One of the key successes of the Tea Party Movement was the way they stoked the rage of the republican base and got them to the polls in their landslide election victories of 2010 (which, unfortunately, has inflicted massive damage on the rest of the country).

It seems to me that the Democratic Party would do well to stoke a little anger right here, right now for the 2014 midterm elections.  Today, countless fast food workers around the globe are striking for $15 an hour ($31,600 a year, full-time, for our math challenged conservative foes) and the right to unionize. There are numerous Americans who are just as angry as these workers, and we need to tap into that and send republicans and their obstructionism and callous disregard for the poor and working class in America on their way out the doors of Congress.  Democrats need to get back to their roots, and fight for the poor and working class like FDR did.
