Some free advice

I have a better plan...

If you have school age children (or grandchildren), now is the time of year when at each and every turn schools are either A) Asking you for money, or B) Having your kids sell something to give them even more of your money.  And each year, with republicans controlling our legislature and public education's purse strings, I'm really tempted to send in a note in lieu of my hard earned cash that says, "Have you tried voting for Democrats instead?  We don't cut taxes for millionaires at the expense of our kids' education."

It probably wouldn't go over very well, but I'd feel a whole lot better.

Grass roots

In my community, every two years we elect members to our local school board.  While I consider myself to be considerably informed on most of the other contested electoral races, to be honest I never have the slightest idea who to vote for in these elections.  So I usually vote for the women candidates because, well, women are smarter than men, and especially when it comes to kids.

So I was thrilled this past Friday when our son brought home a newsletter from school that highlighted the five candidates who would be running for the three open spots (six year terms) on our school board, and what they stood for.  This year I'd know who to vote for for these three spots.

Until I actually started reading the synopses of the candidates.

Of the five candidates, four of them were members of the Chamber of Commerce.  Anyone out there gullible enough to believe the Chamber of Commerce gives two shits about our kids?

So if you're wondering why our schools are underfunded, why our classrooms are getting larger, why charter schools and for profit schools are getting a larger and larger share of the pie (for failing miserably) that should be going to your kids, you might just take a good look at the folks who are running for your local school boards.

Because they're being put in there by the likes of the Chamber of Commerce who, in a nutshell, is probably only second to the republican party in its disdain for the needs of America's working class.

Profiles in courage

When I first read this piece, which cites data showing that the number of children attending our public schools who are homeless was up for the 2012-2013 school year by 8% to 1.25 million kids, I was, as I usually am, both saddened and angered that numbers such as these are the norm in the richest nation in the history of civilization.

But the more I thought about it, the more it dawned on me how courageous these people are.  I mean, I know how hard it is some mornings to get up in the freezing cold, or when we're a little under the weather, or when we didn't sleep well, or worked late, and have to make that trek from our home to the Beautiful Boy's school.  How much harder must it be to make that trek when you're doing it from Aunt Jo's basement, or some flea bag motel, or your car?  And they do it because they know that if there's one thing that can give their kids a chance at a better life than they have, it's an education.

And thanks to our public education system, their kids have that chance, even if they don't have any money.

If there's any one reason--and there are many very good other reasons--to support, fund, and save our public education system, this is it.  It's the only decent chance some kids have.

Hey, let's have the dumbest kids, too!

In Michigan republicans never ending quest to see just how fast they can make folks flee our once bountiful state (e.g., rape insurance for our girls and women, right to work for less, raising taxes on seniors while cutting taxes for corporations and creating zero good jobs, shutting off water for the poor folks in Detroit), their minions in the corporate world are targeting our teacher unions (in wake of right to work for less laws that allow freeloading scum to opt out of paying dues to the union, but still get represented) in order to break them.

Anyone who doesn't believe that the ultimate goal here is to turn teaching into a minimum wage job is an utter fool.  One wonders, though, just what these assholes think will be the quality of the teachers educating our children at eight bucks an hour.

And therein lies the rub--they really don't give a shit.  They'll pay a few pennies less in taxes, and their kids are in Richie Rich private schools.

It's a win-win for the wealthy elite.

Seventy-five percent of teachers (up from sixty percent just a year ago) report that they have children in their classrooms who regularly come to school hungry.  One supposes with the republican push to cut $40 billion from SNAP benefits they're shooting for an A+ and hoping to get that number to 100% of teachers.

Speaking of teachers, did you know that American teachers spend an average of $37 every month to feed their students?

What a bunch of overpaid assholes those teachers are....

Those who can't...become spokespeople for republicans

Those of a certain age will remember a weekly segment on Sixty Minutes called "Point/Counterpoint" or the SNL send up of the segment ("Jane, you ignorant misguided slut!").  The Free Press on occasion runs a similar series called "Opposing Points of View."  All too often, it results in a chance for republicans, republican advocates, corporations, or corporate advocates to peddle their lies under the guise of being published in the big city newspaper.  The Free Press does an excellent job of abetting them.

As in these opposing pieces--the first another in a long line of recent attacks on public sector unions without merit and the second a defense of public sector unions.  The first piece, written by Michael Lomax and Michelle Rhee (she of the Washington D. C. Erasuregate Scandal--her system, as is typical of conservatives, worked so well when they cheated on their test scores--and a fine job done by the Free Press informing its readers of such), basically advocates that the best teachers should be kept, regardless of experience.  Sounds good in theory, but what it really amounts to, its ugly little secret so to speak, is ageism, which is used regularly in the corporate world where there are no unions to protect workers.  It's about cutting pay, and has nothing whatsover to do with what's best for the children.  In fact, I find it especially disgusting that republicans have the fucking gall to talk about what's best for children when with their desires to cut Medicaid and their gutting of education budgets it's brutally obvious that the children of the nation are as much a concern to them as a fly on its ass is to a hippo.

This is little more than the Free Press helping conservatives continue their assault on the poor, the working poor, and the middle class.  It's a race to the bottom--lower wages, lower benefits, and less protection for us in return for more money for corporations and the wealthy, with the Free Press giving a cover of legitimacy. 

Freedom of the press is all too often wasted on the wrong organizations.
