That finger is white for a reason...

...to understand why it is that white men carrying guns are allowed to angrily scream in the face of police officers because they can't get a haircut whilst the officers show the utmost in restraint, but the minute people of color protest the murder of a black man for forgery, the vast majority of them peacefully, but a couple of jackasses break a few windows and the police feel the need to blast all of them with tear gas.

Though I think we all know why.

Colin Kaepernick weighed in today with probably the most succinct analysis of where these state sanctioned murders of African Americans would all lead...and he's probably right that in the face of this violence cries for peace will eventually fall on deaf ears. 

And one can assume that it most certainly won't have a happy ending for either the police or a hell of a lot of those white folks screaming about their freedom to have a Bud Light in a bar.

Justice is supposed to be color blind, isn't it?

You know all those folks who have been protesting Stay at Home Directives over the past few weeks and screaming about the U.S. Constitution and their right to get a haircut?

For all their concern about the Constitution, why the heck do you suppose they weren't protesting in Minnesota this week?  I mean George Floyd didn't get his Sixth Amendment rights to a speedy trial before an impartial jury before he was executed by the Minneapolis police, so you'd think they'd be up there with their guns screaming in the streets about our Constitutional rights, wouldn't you?  Hell, isn't a human life worth at least a little more than free refills for your iced tea?

Wonder if they would have showed up if George Floyd had been white....

Leaving aside the million dollars of our taxes that Mike Pence spent for his publicity stunt in the shithole that is Indiana yesterday, the thing that most stands out from his walking out on the 49ers protest yesterday is the sheer and utter incompetence that came with it.  Notifying the media beforehand that it was likely Pence's stay at the game would be short and his flying cross country (again, at a cost to us of over a million dollars) was beyond stupid.  These fucking people can't even do a PR event right and we're supposed to trust them to run our country?

By the way, if you want to read a thoughtful piece on what Pence's walkout really meant (can you say systemic oppression, boys and girls?), read what 49ers safety Eric Reid had to say.

Finally, I can honestly say I've never been prouder to be a lifelong 49ers fan.  NINERS!!!

Another day, another embarrassment for the police in America

Blogger's Disclaimer:  I have a child with ADHD,

A sheriff's deputy in Kentucky is being sued by the ACLU for handcuffing an eight-year-old boy and a nine-year-old girl around the biceps--both children suffer from ADHD.  State law in Kentucky prohibits the restraining of children as either a means of punishment or a means of securing compliance.

Predictably, the Kenton County Sheriff's Office issued a lame statement in support of the officer, claiming he acted appropriately in light of the situation.  This, in a couple of words, is total bullshit.  The officer a) obviously knows absolutely nothing about the symptoms of ADHD (impulsiveness is part and parcel of the hyperactivity), and b) knows even less about how to care for children.  The video at the accompanying link shows a child that at best is less than half the size of the officer--frankly, if the officer can't physically control a subject that small without resorting to violence, or lacks the mental capacity to reason a peaceful solution with a nine-year-old, he has no fucking business being anywhere near children in a supervisory position.

Here's hoping the ACLU wins a boatload of money for the families of the two children and the officer is relegated to cleaning toilets at the local burger joint.

If not, you will after watching this young man school Geraldo Rivera and Fox News:

A young American speaking eloquently and passionately about his city and the bullshit that too often passes for news reporting on Fox News.  There seems to be those who think the young man was indicting all of the media (Chris Hayes chased this theme last night as here on Daily Kos) but I've watched it four times now (the young man is that good) and I will guarantee you he isn't talking about anyone but Fox News.  And he's right--Fox News doesn't care about Baltimore, about the poverty, about the joblessness, about the hunger, about the good that these folks do, about the hopelessness they fight every day while still trying to keep hope.  Fox News is only there to scare their white republican viewers--the thugs are coming to get you!  The thugs are coming to get you!

No, they aren't.  They're too damn busy trying to survive to worry about your ignorant asses.

And the children shall lead us, indeed.

The ghost of revolution future

While I would not downplay the role police brutality toward Freddie Gray (and numerous other instances) had in the unrest in Baltimore last night, it would be equally foolish to disregard the effects of the downward spiral of our economy for the past thirty years on our inner cities--and likewise, on America's working poor and middle class.  Police vioence on top of joblessness, hunger, and little hope for the future is not a recipe for peace and brotherhood.

The powers that be in America need to take a good look at what happened in Baltimore last night (and Ferguson, MO last summer)--if things don't change economically for a vast majority of Americans and very soon, it's only a matter of time before the anger and turmoil moves from our inner cities into our suburbs as well, and the end results will not be pretty for those at the top.

A gated community might keep a burglar or everday miscreant out, but it's not likely to stop a hostile mob that's tired of being cold, hungry, and jobless.
