A true American patriot

In the wake of Roger Goodell, Commissioner of the NFL, apologizing to players in lieu of Patrick Mahomes powerful video questioning the NFL on its policies toward protests against racism, Donald Trump decided to send a tweet Sunday night questioning whether or not the NFL would backtrack on its policy against kneeling.  Considering that Trump's approval numbers are plummeting and he's losing badly to Joe Biden, this is little more than Trump trying to find anything that will help him with his racist base and prop up his numbers at least a little.  He hopes that blaming the black folks for disrespecting the flag and our country will lead him to another victory come November.

Good luck with that--my guess is this fall we're going to see a whole hell of a lot more players than we did last time taking a knee.  And that many of them will be among the most high profile players in the league.  With approval for Black Lives Matter easily outdistancing Trump's approval for the job he's doing, it's hard to see that Trump's tweets this fall won't fall on mostly deaf ears and will only add fuel to the fire for those of us who would crawl over broken glass to send his ass back home this November.

But by all means, please proceed.

If there is any good that can come out of Drew Brees and his exceedingly insensitive and untimely comments on players taking a knee for the National Anthem, it's that maybe we can finally put an end to the tired trope that players doing such are being disrespectful of the flag or our troops.  Athletes taking a knee was never about the flag or our troops, and it was always about protesting police brutality.

Disrespecting the flag or our troops was never more than a right wing talking point so they could excuse police brutality and let their white privilege continue unabated.

If you can't handle the heat, get the fuck out of the kitchen

In a long line of chilling aspects of the coronavirus pandemic (not the least of which is the utter incompetence of the Trump administration), one that has come to light (at least for me) in the last few days is the increasing calls to muzzle criticism...with many of them coming with explicit threats:

• A doctor writing in the Daily Kos noted how he and his fellow healthcare providers are being told to not criticize the hospitals they work for for supply shortages or the inability to adequately protect their workers from the spread of COVID-19...doctors and nurses have been asked to delete posts and tweets under threats of their losing their jobs.
• In an ill-advised but unsurprising move (the NFL is full of racist, old, rich men who worship the moron Trump), the National Football League has decided to still hold its annual draft later this month.  The kicker?  Its idiot sycophant commissioner, Roger Goodell, threatened disciplinary action against any team publicly criticizing his decision.
• While it's understandable that Google would be monitoring ads for scams offering coronavirus cures and elixirs or ones that are disseminating misinformation, it is certainly not understandable to ban ads that are critical of the Trump administration's epic failure to protect Americans from the virus...especially when still allowing the Trump campaign to run highly politicized ads.

Desperate times may call for desperate measures, but the last thing we as a nation need right now is the curtailing of criticism to save corporate bottom lines at the expense of dispensing information that can slow the spread of coronavirus and/or keep Americans safer and healthier.

These kind of gestures reek of totalitarian states like Russia and North Korea, and certainly are not a reflections of a nation that is supposed to be a beacon of freedom to the rest of the world.

There goes my hero

A true American hero

Once again this past week, the NFL completely embarrassed itself (but it's a toss-up whether Jay-Z embarrassed himself more) in setting up a phony workout for Colin Kaepernick and having the much smarter Kaepernick see through it  and shove the NFL's hypocrisy up its ass just one more time.

But I'd like to point out something that was not reported on by any national sports outlet (so much for journalistic integrity...)--at his workout, Kaepernick sported a shirt with the name Kunta Kinte on it.

For those not familiar, Kunta Kinte is a character in Alex Haley's novel Roots who was kidnapped to America as part of the slave trade.  Once under his master's thumb, Kinte refused to be called by his slave name, Toby, and would only answer to Kunta Kinte until it was literally beaten out of him.

By wearing that shirt, Kaepernick made it perfectly clear that he was only going to return to the NFL as a free man, and not as the slave the NFL would have preferred.

Kaepernick has easily been the most courageous and inspirational American of the last decade, and the NFL is much poorer for not having a man of his character and talent among its players.

The deadskins

This is the week that was in the National Fucked (up) League:

The Washington Redskins, the organization with the racist team name, were the only team to pick up one Reuben Foster, who had been released last week by the 49ers (about a year too late, truthfully) who has now been accused of domestic violence twice (in fairness, the first charges were dropped, though there's something not quite kosher about the dropping of the accusation).

And then, after having a second quarterback lost for the season due to injury, the Redskins declined to sign noted national anthem protester Colin Kaepernick as a backup because he doesn't fit into their system (which seems to be the go to answer for not signing Kaepernick among all teams in the NFL--amazing he guided a team to the Super Bowl considering how ill suited he is to NFL offensive systems, isn't it?).

So this is the message the NFL is sending to our kids:  Beat a woman and you can have a job, but if you exercise your constitutionally protected right to free speech by taking a knee during the national anthem to protest racial inequality, you cannot be employed in the NFL.

Completely.  Fucking.  Clueless.

National Fucked Up League

Two men who show us every day what courage really means

While most folks are familiar with Colin Kaepernick, not nearly as many are familiar with Eric Reid.  Reid was Kaepernick's teammate on the San Francisco 49ers, and was among the first to join him in taking a knee to protest police brutality and systemic oppression of African-Americans in the United States.  After his contract with the 49ers ran out after last season, Reid was unable to secure another until reaching agreement with the Carolina Panthers four games into this season.  Rather than take the easy route and temper his protest, Reid has continued to take a knee and speak out quite eloquently about inequality in America.

For his troubles, Reid has found himself drug tested five times in the six weeks he's been back in the NFL--note that the drug tests in the NFL are random, and the odds of any player being tested five times in six weeks is less than 1/2 percent.  Can you say "harassment" boys and girls?

It's too bad ESPN has become the TMZ of sports journalism because this seems like quite a coincidence to me.

Anyway, the next time you see the NFL and their television network cohorts doing one of their support the troops spectacles, remember that the only troops they truly care about are the white ones.

Who the fuck cares?

At least these guys would make the NHL watchable...

Considering that a) there are more African-Americans on your average NFL team's starting defense than there is in the entire National Hockey League, and b) that the majority of players in the NHL aren't even Americans, it was somewhat surprising that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman was even asked about the NHL's reaction to the anthem protests in the National Football League.  Nonetheless, Bettman's response was typical, showing complete ignorance to the racism in America which stirred the protests in the first place, and toeing the line of what the lily white and ultra wealthy owners in the NHL would prefer:  fans don't come to games for protest rallies.

Which should come as quite the relief to the three Americans that actually still watch hockey.

Leaving aside the million dollars of our taxes that Mike Pence spent for his publicity stunt in the shithole that is Indiana yesterday, the thing that most stands out from his walking out on the 49ers protest yesterday is the sheer and utter incompetence that came with it.  Notifying the media beforehand that it was likely Pence's stay at the game would be short and his flying cross country (again, at a cost to us of over a million dollars) was beyond stupid.  These fucking people can't even do a PR event right and we're supposed to trust them to run our country?

By the way, if you want to read a thoughtful piece on what Pence's walkout really meant (can you say systemic oppression, boys and girls?), read what 49ers safety Eric Reid had to say.

Finally, I can honestly say I've never been prouder to be a lifelong 49ers fan.  NINERS!!!

A true American hero

One man who made a difference

You have to be a special kind of stupid to believe that Colin Kaepernick is not currently on a National Football League team roster because he's no longer the player he once was.  There are at least four to five starting quarterbacks in the NFL (including the starting QB for Kaepernick's former team, the 49ers) right now that are not as good as Kaepernick, and that's not even counting the thirty-two for the most part no name backup quarterbacks employed in the NFL.

And it begs the question:  what would you be willing to give up to take a knee for your beliefs?

Granted, Kaepernick signed a very lucrative contract a few years back and likely isn't going to be homeless any time soon.  Still, he spent a lifetime preparing to become an NFL player, realized his dream, and then lost his dream because he had the courage to stand up for his beliefs, the courage to say that African-Americans deserve better than they are receiving from their country and its leaders.

 He started a movement, one that's making America and Americans better.

And that's a hell of a lot more than one can say about that son of a bitch Donald Trump and his minions.

Fuck the flag

It's a piece of cloth

Once again republicans have controlled the narrative and turned what was a protest about racial inequality in America into a controversy about the flag and free speech.  Turn to most any channel, read most any article, and what they're screaming about is patriotism vs. free speech rights.  Colin Kaepernick did not take a knee for free speech (though his actions very much are)--he took a knee to call out African-American citizens being gunned down by our police with impunity.  To call out unemployment being greater among people of color.  To call out poverty being greater among people of color.

Remember that every time they cry about respect for the flag, or question the patriotism of those who originally took a knee, they are telling you that a piece of cloth is more important than an American life.

And we need to punch back by telling them it isn't.

Which caused the St. Louis Police Officers Association to go apoplectic and demand the players be disciplined (the NFL said no, thanks) and that the Rams and the NFL issue an apology, because, you know, it wasn't enough that a piss poor and rigged grand jury proceeding let murderer Darren Wilson go free.

Here's hoping that next week the Rams' players give the St. Louis Police Officers Association a one finger salute.

Well I'll be....

From Anheuser-Busch today:

"We are disappointed and increasingly concerned by the recent incidents that have overshadowed this NFL season. We are not yet satisfied with the league's handling of behaviors that so clearly go against our own company culture and moral code. We have shared our concerns and expectations with the league."

There isn't much of the usual corporate bullshit in that statement--it's pretty clear the folks at Anheuser are none too happy with the NFL's bungling of a week's worth of coverage of the abusive behavior of a number of its stars.  And it is a little surprising, truth be told.

God knows I'm one of the first to point out the all too usual egregious behavior by U.S. corporations--Anheuser-Busch deserves the props it's been getting today for its no bullshit stance.  Especially considering that beer goes with football like popcorn goes with movies.

Why sportswriters should stick to writing about sports

Unless you've been in a coma, it would be hard to miss all the coverage on just about every type of media outlet concerning the video of Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice physically abusing his then girlfriend (now wife), resulting in his being fired by the Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL.

What many may not know (perhaps because neither player is of the star status of Rice), is that there are two  other players currrently facing domestic violence charges--Greg Hardy of the Carolina Panthers (appealing his conviction) and Ray McDonald of the San Francisco 49ers (arrested September 1st, case still being investigated).  For obvious reasons, there are many calling for both of these players to be suspended as well.

In an interview today, 49ers CEO Jed York said the 49ers would not punish McDonald until due process has played out.  Which prompted San Francisco Chronicle sports columnist Ann Killion to tweet that York had dropped the "due process card."

Excuse me, but due process is not a fucking card--it's a right that's been around since the Magna Carta and is every American's constitutional right, as outlined in clauses in the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments.  I am in no way defending McDonald's actions (full disclosure:  I've been a 49ers fan since 1968)--there's probably a 99% chance that he's guilty.  But due process exists (as wisely inserted by our Founding Fathers in the Fifth Amendment) for that 1% chance that he isn't--and that chance shouldn't be treated so flippantly.

Just ask the mother and father of Michael Brown what happens when authorities take a citizen's due process into their own hands.

WTF #1245

While watching commentators on Fox, ESPN, and CBS (with the notable exception of Shannon Sharpe) fall all over themselves trying to be fair to all parties while preaching the old boys will be boys nonsense concerning the rather embarrassing (for the NFL) Miami Dolphins' fiasco involving guard Richie Incognito calling teammate Jonathan Martin the n-word (as well as telling him he'd wanted to take a shit in his mouth), I had but one thought.

Is there any business--any one fucking business--in the entire United States of America where one employee could call another employee the n-word and tell him or her that he wanted to shit in his or her mouth and at the very least, the very fucking least, not ended up in counseling/sensitivity training?  And probably be on a very short leash for the rest of his time with said business?

For fuck's sake, do the Dolphins even have a Human Resources department?

There's nothing to defend here.  If it's not acceptable in any other business, it's not acceptable in the NFL.
